PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Several days last week on my drive back into Honolulu from Kapolei, the
awesome practicing Thunderbirds illustrated how important the military is to the
Hawaii economy. With the current downturn and State layoffs and furloughs,
their presence is one of the major bright spots that enable many companies,
including mine, to prosper in these bad times. Securing a few projects funded
with Federal stimulus monies has also been helpful, and, hopefully, the ripple
effect from the construction of the new rail system will definitely help move
our economy out of the current depression. A thriving economy means more
disposable income available for skiing and boarding.
The trip committee has reported that we have filled all of our allotted airline
seats to Aspen and that a wait list has been established. For those of you that
have already secured a spot, Ski Week 2010 will be one of our best attended, and
since Colorado has already had its first significant snowfall, hopefully we'll
have great snow coverage and conditions.
With football season in full swing, holiday season just around the corner and
general membership the largest that I can remember, hopefully I will be seeing
many of you at many of the events we have planned up to our trip. The Board has
planned a repeat of the Halloween Party at Wine the Experience, the
Pre-Thanksgiving Black Turkey Day at the "Roth Estate," and the Annual
Christmas Party/Koko Marina Boat Parade at the Large’s home on the water.
Aloha,
GEOF

“Tosca combines Puccini’s glorious musical inspiration with the melodramatic
vitality of one of the great Hitchcock films,” says Met Music Director James
Levine, who conducts this new production. The opera tells the story of three
people—a famous opera singer, a free-thinking painter, and a sadistic chief of
police—caught in a net of love and politics.

January 16, 2010
One of the most popular operas of all time, Carmen “is about sex, violence, and
racism—and its corollary: freedom,” says Olivier Award-winning director Richard

PAST ACTIVITIES:
END OF SUMMER SPLASH - 2009
As always, the end-of-summer pool party provided lots of fun, food and
frivolity, especially with wine tasting AND a chocolate fountain (chocolate and
red wine complement each other). Congratulations to Wanda Sowell and Sam Wright
for being the winners of the best red and white wines! Ask Wanda or Sam if you
want to know the names of their winning wines since the bottles disappeared
quickly! And congratulations to the winners of the Rubber Duckie race: Jenna
Surwilo’s baby duck was the first to reach the finish line, but the Hawaii Food
Bank was the real winner because all donations will go to support that charity
and our community.

MAKIKI VALLEY LOOP TRAIL HIKE
The cool, shaded trails of lower Tantalus were a welcome respite from the heat and humidity of Sunday afternoon, September 13. Although only four of us, Peggy Duvall, Jon and Momi Kleinschmidt, and "Li'l Ol Me" me began the hike from the Puu Ualakaa parking lot, we were soon joined by Kathy Mulledy and two friends, Cheryl and Christine, who had zagged when they should have zigged on the drive up the hill, arrived late to the parking lot, but were taken under tow by some friendly trail runners/fast hikers who passed us in a whirlwind, announcing that we should hold up because our friends were coming. Now transformed into the "The Magnificent Seven," we continued on the loop trail where we braved the tortuous downhill, were treated to the fragrance of an Allspice plant, and, thanks to the sharp eyes and climbing ability of "Tarzan" Jon, the tastes of Cherry Guavas and Mountain Apples. Following the hike, which lasted for 2 hours, 45 minutes, we "chilled" over beer and nachos at Wahoo's Fish Tacos across from Ward Warehouse. It was good exercise, good camaraderie, and, possibly, a couple of new members. Who knows?

PAU HANA AT THE KAIMUKI GRILL
On Friday, September 18th, a cozy group of 6 spent an enjoyable
Friday evening at Kaimuki Grill for Pau Hana. The evening started slowly with
the Boise State Broncos busting the Fresno State Bulldogs, but by the time the
Rainbow Wahine started washing over the Pepperdine Waves, the conversation
shifted into high gear with a hilarious exchange of the famous last words
"Follow me...!" mountain near-disaster stories. As the least experienced
boarder in the group it was OMG and amazing to me that everyone is thankfully
still here to laugh and tell about it! The Fried Rice was a big hit and the
Kalua Pig Nachos is something you must see as well as taste! For a relaxed,
intimate atmosphere with great (and cheap) food, the Kaimuki Grill is
definitely at the top of the list.
