PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As summer ends, I always look forward to our Annual Pool Party and the
upcoming University of Hawaii football season. Labor Day weekend is always a
great way to end the summer.
Much MAHALOS to Neal and Arleen who hosted our group aboard their sailboat for a
scenic sail and party off of Waikiki Beach. For those members who were able to
participate, they experienced a great sunny day and enjoyed the view I always
enjoy as we moored 300 yard outside of one of my favorite surf breaks looking
back at my condo on the shore. The fact that there was a high surf advisory that
day made things more exciting and after a morning in the surf there was no
better way to spend the afternoon kicking back and enjoying fine food, drinks,
and friends a short swim from where I was that morning.
The Board has planned a variety of events which include more hikes and bike
rides to help get us in shape for the upcoming ski season. Our Annual Pool
Party, Halloween @ Wine The Experience, Pre-Thanksgiving at Bill Rothe’s and the
Annual Christmas Party on Koko Marina are popular repeat events to round out
2009.
Aloha and GO BOWS!

one of the club's best-attended and most enjoyable activities each year, so make
sure you and friends join the festivities!. Guests are welcome.
WINE TASTING EVENT: Prizes awarded to the winners of the best white and best red

prize, you must bring a bottle of wine for the tasting. The red and white wines
with the most votes win a prize for the person who brought that wine.

MAKIKI VALLEY LOOP TRAIL HIKE
September 13 (Sunday), 12:30 P.M.
Based on the improved turnout for the July hike, we will stick to Sunday
afternoon rather than Saturday morning for hike #4 of the KISS Series. We will
return to Tantalus but, this time, for a hike on the lower trails. Think
chirping birds, shaded trail, gurgling brook, and signs identifying some of the
botanical offerings on the side of the trail. Also think roots, rocks, roots,
feral chickens, roots, steep downhill over roots, possible mud depending upon
recent weather, and more graduated uphill with fewer roots. While this won't be
a "walk in the park," and the downhill portion will require you to watch your
footing due to the roots, it won't be as strenuous or necessarily slow as our
previous hike on Kuliouou Ridge. Wear hiking boots, trail running shoes, or
regular running shoes with good treads on the sole: I would not wear shoes with
worn soles. The trail will be 3.2 miles in length, will take about 2 hours, 30
minutes, and will start from Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park halfway up Round Top
Drive. To get to Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park, go up Round Top drive 2.4 miles from
it's beginning at the intersection with Makiki Heights Drive. You will find a
sign identifying the park entrance on the left hand side of a hairpin turn at
the 2.4 mile point. Drive up to the first lot where you will find a restroom
and should find, unlike the last hike, plenty of places to park.
TOBY
PAU HANA AT THE KAIMUKI GRILL
September 18, (Friday): 5:30 P.M..
1108 12th Ave., near the corner of Harding
Kaimuki Grill is a great place to chill and fill up without breaking the bank.
There are just 10 to 12 tables, and in the early evening, you’ll find more
families or sports fans taking in the games on three of the TV screens. As the
evening goes on, you might find karaoke buffs filling the place — singing starts
at 9 p.m. every night and can go as late as 2 a.m. depending on the crowd. For
comforting, cheap eats, this is definitely on our list for hanging out,
especially with good friends. The menu itself doesn’t offer anything special or
unique (other than the kalua pig nachos), but it’s all good, classic local bar
food that is hard to beat when you’re hungry.
Plenty of paid parking in the municipal lot in front of the restaurant.

Kahala Avenue and Diamond Head Road.
Breaks: Kawaikui Beach Park, Hawaii Kai Town Center, Koko Marina Shopping

the return home. Please make sure your bicycle is in good working order prior
to the ride, put on a good sunscreen, and bring a bottle of your favorite

ANNUAL WINE BOTTLING HALLOWEEN PARTY AT “WINE, THE EXPERIENCE”
October 31, 1016 Kapahulu Ave., Suite 1, 738-0738

This event is so much FUN we’re doing it again, and again. Wine, The Experience
is a trendy bar where they brew wine for us that we will bottle at the party.
Bring a pupu to share, wear your scariest costume, and you may win a prize!
For $15 you get all the “really good” wine you can drink (please drink
responsibly) and afterward, the adventurous will trek into Waikiki to partake of
the insanity that occurs there once a year! If you haven’t experienced Waikiki
on Halloween, it is like nothing else!

PAST ACTIVITIES:
"COME SAIL AWAY, COME SAIL AWAY WITH ME"
Neal Harding and Arleen Gillin had a bunch of ski club landlubbers on their beautiful boat, the Placebo, Saturday August 1. The weather was perfect and we had so much fun as we sailed out from the Ala Wai and out several miles to come back and anchor off of Waikiki to enjoy swimming and the wonderful pupus everyone brought to munch on. Bill Hodges and James Purvis competed for dirtiest jokes while we were cruising (Bill won). It was very relaxing and some of us stayed around for a few drinks with Neal and Arleen after docking. Arleen broke out one of the best bottles of Tequila I’ve ever had. What a great day of sailing, etc! Thanks Arleen & Neal!
JAMES
"LIVE FROM THE LAWN" at HAWAII STATE ART MUSEUM
Did you see those pictures of us flying from trees? Oh, that wasn't us. We were
sitting on the grass, awestruck, watching the Samadhi Aerial Dancers do
gravity-defying acrobatics. Amazing!
Jeff Peterson, an award winning slack-key guitarist, was superb,
too. The Jeff Peterson Jazz Trio, backing up DeShannon Higa on trumpet and
big-time vocalist Anita Hall, accompanied the amazing Aerial Dance. It was an
unforgettable summer evening. Several of our group were able to tear themselves
away to tour the HiSAM building and art gallery. It's a Hawaii treasure. If you
haven't been there, GO!
WANDA
WAIKIKI AQUARIUM SUMMER CONCERT: WILLIE K
As expected, the Waikiki Aquarium was full for the Willie K concert on August
13th. The concert was on the lawn oceanside of the aquarium, so we sat on mats
and sand chairs to enjoy a combination of classic and new-style Willie K music.
ANITA
PAU HANA @ THE LIVINGROOM @ FISHERMAN'S WHARF
The Living Room was a busy spot for Honolulu nightlife! Honolulu's “Best Kept
Secret with a great Pau Hana” wasn’t so secret because it was filled the entire
evening with at least 22 club members and a large group for another pau hana.
Good food, inexpensive (and some FREE) drinks, and a convenient location for
club members. We celebrated 50 years of Hawaii statehood in our own way.
