PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

A handful of slopes have already opened with larger resorts in Utah and Colorado already making snow.  The potential for an abundance of snow this year looks high, and, hopefully, when we arrive in Aspen – Snowmass in late January, there will be good coverage and the snow cats will not be grooming the dirt.  For the young at heart, the Winter X Games coincide with our visit, and you can view a lot of “crashing and burning” on and off the slopes.

It’s now that we are should be thinking of ways to get into condition for our upcoming Ski Week 2010.  Toby has planned one more hikes before we depart, and this year’s venue will result in a lot more time on the slope than last year’s sightseeing and traveling.  Our November General Membership theme will feature a fitness expert to help push us to get fit for Ski Week 2010.

For the holidays, the Board has planned a repeat of the Halloween Party at Wine the Experience, the Pre-Thanksgiving Black Turkey Day at the "Rothe Estate," and the Annual Christmas Party/Koko Marina Boat Parade at the Large’s home on the water.

Aloha,

 BLACK TURKEY DAY THANKSGIVING FEAST
November 15, (Sunday), 3 P.M.  47-461 Hui Kelu St., Kahaluu

The traditional club Thanksgiving dinner at Bill an Rebecca's home will be held on Sunday, November 15, starting at 3:00.  Get out your favorite seasonal recipes to add to Bill Rothe's smoked turkeys, black on the outside, but deliciously juicy meat within. Don't miss this fun occasion to join your friends giving thanks for all the wonderful tastes and smells of the season. There will be an e-mail sign-up for this event. Bring your favorite beverage.  Directions:  Cross on your best route to the Windward side (unless you already live there), and join up with Kahekili Highway.  Pass Windward Community College to Valley of the Temples.  At or after the first traffic light following the cemetery, turn left onto Hui Iwa St.  Continue toward the mountains to the "second coming" of Hui Kelu St. and take a left.   Hui Kelu first appears on your right, but you want to ignore this as it is a long loop road which eventually crosses over Hui Iwa further down where you will be making the turn onto it. Follow Hui Kelu, approximately 1/2 mile it as it wraps around to 47-461 Hui Kelu on the left. Both Google Maps and Google Earth locate the house "dead on."  If lost, call 239-4332

AIEA LOOP TRAIL HIKE
December 6, (Sunday), 12:30 P.M.

The final Hike of the KISS (Keep in Skiing Shape) series will truly be a Kiss.   Although this will be the second longest (4.4 miles), it will also be the most level, and some of it will be on sidewalk-wide trail.  Much of it will be "walk in the park" with beautiful mountain views as well as a spectacular view of the H3 heading up towards the tunnel (Ugh!).  The middle and final sections, however, will be typical "Hawaiian style" trail with roots, rocks, and some mud.  How much mud will depend upon most recent weather.  Also,  unless the DLNR has been out with chainsaws for trail maintenance between now and then (in this economy, I doubt it), there will be some fallen trees to step over.  The hike should take from 2.5 - 3 hours.  We will start from/end at the top parking lot in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area at the top of Aiea Heights Drive.   Drive up the hill 2.7 miles from the intersection of Aiea Heights Drive and Moanalua Rd., and you will enter the park.   Drive  up another .5 miles on the park loop road, and you will come to a parking lot with a covered picnic pavilion on the left and a restroom straight ahead.   Park here and look for other Ski Club hikers (or just me) milling around and waiting for you.  If you start going downhill, you've passed us (me).   Afterwards,  I will be open to suggestions on where, in the Aiea/Pearl City area, we might want to celebrate the end of the weekend with a cold one (or two).  Bring your hiking shoes, energy, and good cheer, and we'll see you on Sunday, December 6.   You can call me at 224-1065 (cell) right up until the time we hit the trail (I'll make sure my ringer is on this time).

ANNUAL SKI CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 19, (Saturday, 5:30 P.M.)

Once again, Darrell and Rheta Large have graciously offered their residence at 585 Kumukahi Place on Spinnaker Isle, Koko Marina to host our Annual Christmas Party.  For over five years running, their kindness, hospitality, and location have provided us with one of the best venues for a perfect party.  Held in conjunction with the “13th Annual “Festival of Lights” Koko Marina Boat Parade”, this party is always well attended and one of our most popular events.  Members need to BYOB and bring a dish to share (Pot luck). The ever popular grab bag will take place, and we ask that a minimum $15.00 gift value be followed.

To get to the Larges', turn off Kalanianaole Highway onto Hawaii Kai Drive, proceed approximately .8 mile until you see Pepeekeo St. on the left: Kumukahi St. ,or the entrance to the street,  will be your next right. After you turn right, you will immediately come to a T: Take a left at the T and look for the 585 on the left.

HAWAII SKI WEEK 2010 - SNOWMASS

I look forward to matching the 70 names with the faces of those who are coming from all over the country to join us at Snowmass. For those who are still toying with the idea of coming, please let me know if you would like to be added to the waitlist.  There have already been a number of you who’ve had to drop out but others have taken their place – let me know and I can notify you as soon as a space opens up. In my experience, there is usually a 10% dropout rate even after the cancellation date.   Last date to cancel without penalty has passed.  All checks will be sent to Rocky Mountain Tours by the first week of November. Please email me, susan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ASAP  if you won’t be able to make the trip so that I can work with the Tour company on what portion of your monies would be reimbursed.   I will also be sending out, via email, a brief information sheet that I need for TSA for anyone flying with us to include your full formal name, gender, and date of birth.   If you would like United Mileage credit for your flight, please also include your Mileage Plus number on that form.

PAST ACTIVITIES:

EAST HONOLULU BIKE RIDE
October 18, 2009

"Pretty day, sunny sky, lovely pictures dance in your eyes. It all seems so right. It all feels so rare. Summer song, sudden breeze, watch the wind play tags in the trees. The world is so right, so perfectly fair. Why couldn't we fly? I know we'd get by. Sunny sky, pretty day, just a push and we're on the way. Yes, couldn't we ride, side by side?" – Kermit and Miss Piggy from the Great Muppet Caper.

On a gorgeous Sunday morning 9 members gathered at Triangle Park near Diamond Head and embarked on a magical mystery tour of east Honolulu. We started by meandering through the quiet west Kahala neighborhood to get our legs warmed up and our motors revved up for the cruise up Kalanianaole Hwy. to Hawaii Kai. Once in Hawaii Kai the group did a clockwise lap around and then on Koko Isle. After a well deserved break at Koko Marina Shopping Center for Shave Ice and Jamba smoothies, the group then took advantage of the tail wind to breeze back to Kahala. One last tour through the mansion lined streets of east Kahala then it was back to Triangle Park. It was a perfect ending to a perfect ride.

In case any of you are wondering about exercise value, you may be interested in this little tidbit of trip information from my Garmin Edge 305 cycling computer:  Total distance: 17 miles. Total calories burned: 896. Enjoyment Value: Priceless!
