Though I have lived here all of my life, over the past few years the Ski Club has enabled me to check out things I kindah, sortah knew existed but never thought of doing. Last Saturday’s trek out to the “ Mok’s,” though strenuous, was well worth the effort. The Diamond Head and Lanikai hikes and new Pau Hana venues are other examples of this. The Board has a variety of events planned for Spring and Summer. For May we have Casino Night and the “Tastes of Honolulu” in June. Hope you can join us!
Aloha, Geof

Casino night is always a fun, highly competitive but legal version of gambling. Participants “buy-in” with a minimum of $5 (and a max of $10) worth of chips, and, at the end of the night, we bid for prizes with our winning chips. The Purvis household is full of gaming supplies: 3 Slot Machines, a 16" roulette wheel, playing surfaces for craps, Texas Hold’em, blackjack, baccarat, and Pai Gow poker, a Nintendo Gamecube with games, a big screen TV, a Jacuzzi, and a Karaoke machine!!! For those who prefer "quieter" activities, they have lots of board games to enjoy. PARTY CITY it is!!! The club will purchase some prizes, but GIFT DONATIONS are appreciated so that more prizes are available. The club needs volunteers to run the tables, so please sign up for at least part of the night so that everyone has an opportunity to gamble. POTLUCK and BYOB.

Whistler Ski Trip, the highlight of our club year – January
The board of directors is looking for a few more people to work on the Trip Committee for our trip to Whistler. Right now we have Wandi, Wanda, Craig, and maybe Linda Giers. If anyone else is interested in working on the trip committee, contact Craig Shaffer Contacts . The trip committee needs to plan a date to meet. Craig has obtained brochures on Whistler's lodging and ground transportation as well as airline scheduling for flights departing on Jan. 25 and returning on Feb 2nd. He has also established a connection with Jason Klym from Intrawest Central reservations [Whistler], who is ready to (Continued from Column 2 Page 3)
book the trip when we [ski club] are ready.
At April's general meeting, we were fortunate that Rebecca Horne, UH Manoa and Honolulu Community College instructor and National Endowment for the Arts grantee, described her year teaching prisoners at the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu how to draw and paint. Rebecca mesmerized the large audience with her tales of life behind prison walls and presentation of art works that she and her incarcerated students created. If you missed Rebecca's awesome presentation, you can read about her "Art in Prison" in a Honolulu Star-Bulletin online article at

Mahalo, Rebecca, for sharing your outstanding talents with our club members.
A group of ski club members kayaked to Flat Island and the Mokuluas, off the windward side of Oahu. Sorry that many of you missed this awesome adventure-- one of those once-in-a-lifetime events. The weather was perfect, the waves were small, the paddling was arduous, but it was a spectacular experience. These islands are bird sanctuaries, so we saw hundreds of birds nesting all around us. As we hiked over the islands, we could hear the birds "murmuring" to each other from their nests. Surprisingly, the only major problem (other than sore shoulders and arms from paddling) happened when Wandi and Wanda’s kayak was attempting to depart the Mokus: a stranger's kayak caught a wave and crashed into W & W's kayak! But our women were undaunted and paddled back to Oahu in time to barbeque on Kailua Beach
