Recent Activities:

UH Men’s Volleyball vs. BYU

The ski club members who attended the UH men’s volleyball match against BYU were in for a treat when # 2 ranked UH defeated BYU (#4) in 3 straight games with strong performance by Jose Delgado and his teammates.  The following night the Rainbow Warriors beat BYU again in 5 games during senior night.  Let’s hope the Bows continued their strong showing during the playoffs (this article was written BEFORE the playoffs!)  Of course we also enjoyed the pre-game pau hana at EastSide Grill in Puck’s Alley.

CLUB MEMBERS WHO WENT SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING ALL OVER THE MAINLAND (Claire in Colorado):

Claire went to Colorado, and wrote the following: “Did I make the last run in 2006?  Dick said if I went to Colorado I had to write something for the newsletter.  It was a test for my knees since I struggled in Montana last year.  With a cortisone injection and shorter skis it was super!  I went to 3 great places – staying on green runs I hate to admit – but spring skiing rocks!  Snow was plentiful and conditions perfect.

Copper Mountain was my favorite – easy access (an hour from my son’s in Golden) right off I-70.  Nice wide runs, good free bus between three lodge areas.  The main village area looked to have some great condos that are ski in/ski out.  We made the mistake of getting started near the crowded ski school, but it seemed super for anyone starting to snowboard.  Let’s go sometime as a club.

Winter Park was less easy to get to, up a good long road from I-70.  I heard they have a ”Ski Train” that makes the trip better, and drops you off right at the main resort area ($49 single, $44 for groups of 20+, $39 for seniors 62+).  This sounds like a lot of fun.  Skiing there was great until about 1 PM when it started getting sticky.  Lunch entertainment was right in front of the Restaurant/Bar, a “freestyle snowboard contest”.  Loved it!  They seemed to cater to disabled skiers.  My knees were a minor thing once I saw the guy with one leg swooshing down at high speed.

4/10 Eldora was the last place – known as the closest in ski resort (to Denver).  Kind of a Mom and Pop place, smaller and with a European feel.  The overall area is smaller, but there’s enough to keep anyone happy.  To get there go to Boulder and turn left heading to Nederland.  I’ll bring trail maps to the May meeting.  Anyone with comments or opinions, I’ll see you there.  Hope others write about their skiing adventures so we can learn from each other.”  Claire

Announcements:

Ski Club Shirt Order

Since we have a new club name, now is the time to order new club shirts. We are putting together a club shirt order that requires a minimum order of 24 shirts.  Ski club members are always encouraged to wear these shirts to our events to promote the ski club.

Good Internet News!  The Hawaii Ski Club now has TWO internet  addresses:

www.hawaiiskiclub.com OR www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com (the name on our bumper stickers).  Either way you'll be able to find information about the ski club including the latest newsletter and photos. Thank you, John Orendt, our webmaster, for making this possible.  Soon the photos on the ski club website will be updated, so this is the final call for photos of the Vail or Mammoth trips or any club activity.  To keep costs down, the board decided to update our website only once

a year after the ski trips and elections, so email the digital photos to Anita at Contacts if you hope to have your photos on our website.

Activities Suggestions:  The ski club’s two new board members, Kathlyn Wong and Gordon Ng, are excited about new ideas and activities for our club.  However, we encourage ALL club members to suggest or host different activities.  If there is something that you would like to do, we encourage you to inform a board member or to announce it during the monthly general meeting..  Let us know since there are always special things to do in Honolulu that we can do as a club.

Ski trip information:

Hawaii Ski Week February 2007: Park City, Utah.  Further information will be forthcoming!
