President's Message

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY! Last weekend’s bike ride was rained-out but perhaps it may be time left to sneak away and hit the slopes one last time should the rain continue.

My term as president is PAU and much MAHALO’S to the BOARD OF DIRECTORS for their work over the last year. They were able to:

  • Organize and conduct a successful trip to Vail while keeping the price very reasonable
  • Redesign the club website
  • Create a club brochure
  • Change the club name to the HAWAII SKI CLUB
  • Maintain the membership numbers
  • Organizing parties and activities for the membership

Keep up the good work!

Aloha,

Geof

Recent Activities:

FORD ISLAND BIKE RIDE:

Due to unrelenting rain, the March Ford Island bike ride was canceled but will be re-scheduled during the summer (when there’s less chance of rain). Many club members had their bikes tuned up for this event, but they won’t be disappointed when we reschedule the Ford Island adventure in the near future. Keep checking the calendar of events in upcoming newsletters to discover the new date for the Ford Island bike ride.

Mammoth Mountain Resort – March 4 thru 11, 2006

On a sunny Saturday morning (March 4, 2006), four of us club members (Lori, Darrell, Craig and Geof) met up at LAX and drove up to Mammoth Mountain. After stopping for breakfast in Mojave, we arrived in Mammoth @ 1:00 PM. We got settled and hit the slopes first thing Sunday morning starting with a Mountain Tour conducted by Geof.  Unfortunately the tour went around the backside of the peak on a windblown icy narrow cat track. No wonder we did not see anyone going in that direction. Toward the end of the track Darrell crashed and burned suffering a torn tendon in his hand. He gutted it out for the rest of the day but underwent surgery at the local hospital the following evening. But we all know Darrell, after a day’s rest after surgery and a cast on his hand he was back on the slopes and joined us for the rest of the trip.

While at Mammoth we had about 2-3 feet of snowfall, mostly while we were on the slopes. The snow conditions, when we could see, were awesome, very similar to Vail. Sunday night we were joined by Gail and Cheryl who spent a few days with us. On Friday we spent the day at June Mountain Resort and drove back to LAX on Saturday morning.

Mammoth is a big mountain (4,000+ acres) with varied terrain well divided in ability. Not very much double black stuff. June Mountain is a smaller mountain (700 acres) with mostly groomed beginner and intermediate terrain and is less crowded than Big Sky Montana. Mammoth has two negatives while we were there: Crowded restaurants and it is known for its wind. Other than that it would be a good fit for the club.

CLUB MEMBERS WHO WENT SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING ALL OVER THE MAINLAND:
