PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Last Saturday, on a clear, virtually cloudless morning, a few club members, under the guidance of our “stay in shape” guru, Toby, hiked up a small hill in Manoa valley just past the old Chinese graveyards.  Upon reaching the top, the view of the back of the valley and Waikiki assured me that we live in and take for granted that, Hawaii is one of the greatest places to live. Despite the lack of snow and ski resorts, it’s “all good."  The upcoming summer, with longer days, summer swells, and consistent trade wind weather contribute to my favorite time of year.  I hope you take advantage of the weather and join us on future hikes and events designed to take advantage of our beautiful location and get you off your “butts” to get some exercise.

As for other summer events that are new to the club, we have a get together aboard a sail boat for a trip off Honolulu’s South Shore, a televised forum on Olelo designed to let the viewers know about the Hawaii Ski Club and the Memorial Day Weekend Bike Ride @ Barbers Point NAS.  Refer to the following write ups:  Participation is encouraged and open to all members.

As a housekeeping announcement, Jonathan Carr has resigned from his one year term on the Board of Directors. Wanda Sowell was appointed by the Board to take his place and will continue as Club Treasurer until her term expires in April 2010.

Hope to see you all at scheduled events this summer.

Aloha,

GEOF

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GERERAL MEETING AT SAM SNEAD'S TAVERN
May 7 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Michael Cloe is completing a "producer" class with Olelo' Television and, as part of his Final Exam, needs to produce a mini video. Michael chose the Hawaiian Ski Club as his subject and would like to go over the idea in more details at the meeting.  We are looking for volunteers in front of and behind the camera. Although he has a production idea in mind, he's open to any and all ideas. The video will be shown on an olelo' channel, twice in prime time and twice in not-so prime time. This video will be ours to keep and use in the future, so we want to do it up right.  So come to the meeting with your ideas.   Also,  be sure to get to the Tavern  before 5:30 if you want to take advantage of the 2 (dinners) for 1 (cheap price) dinner special,

PAU HANA AT THE NEW OCEANS 808
Restaurant Row, May 15 (Friday), 5:00PM

The newly remodeled Oceans 808 in Restaurant Row will be the site of our May 15th pau hana.  The lounge has been freshened up with revamped lighting, a "wall of water," upscale counter tops, floors and sound systems.  Dress code for men requires collared shirts or designer tees, long pants, and covered shoes. (I guess women can wear whatever they want!!!!!) Happy hour runs from 4:30 to 8pm with $3 specials in spirits, wine, beers and imported drafts plus happy hour prices on tempting pupus. Plenty of free parking.

BIKE RIDE-BARBER'S POINT N.A.S.
Saturday, May 23, 2009 – Memorial Day Weekend – 9:00 AM
Barber’s Point Golf Course Parking Lot

Join fellow club members on a leisurely bicycle ride thru the old Barbers Point Naval Air Station. The terrain is flat, virtually "trafficless," and follows the coastline and abandoned paved roadways.  We plan on meeting at the Barbers Point Golf Course parking lot and starting out from there.  To get to the parking, head south on Fort Weaver Road, and make a right turn onto Geiger Road. Proceed west into the closed Barbers Point NAS gate.  It is immediately past the Honouliuli Waste Water Treatment Plant.  Once past the abandoned guard shack, take an immediate left and follow the short road to the golf course parking lot.  Once on the base, the golf course is only about a quarter mile away.  If you have driven farther than that, you are lost.

Bill Roth, who works onsite,  plans to lead us on the ride.  We plan to return to the golf course restaurant by 12:00 PM for drinks and lunch.   Any member who wishes to go but does not have a bicycle can contact anyone on the Board:  We will try to hook you up with a ride.  Several of the members have extra bicycles.

UPPER TANTALUS HIKE
June 20 (Saturday), 8:30 A.M.

Ski Club members who took this hike (All three of us:  Wanda, Jon, and Yours Truly)  had such a good time on October 18th that we are repeating it ("Deja Vu all over again") for the rest of you.

We will leave from the small parking lot where Tantalus Drive meets (or becomes) Round Top Drive at 8:30 A.M., hike up the Puu Ohia Trail to the top, go down the back side to the Manoa Cliffs Trail, hike out to Round Top Drive, approximately a mile down from where we started, and walk the road back to our cars. There will be some ocean views near the top and views of Manoa Valley from the Manoa Cliffs Trail. To get to the start, go one block mountain direction on Makiki St. from Nehoa St. where you will find a triangle shaped park with a Board of Water Supply pumping station. Go up the right side of the park to the intersection with Round Top Drive on the left, and take Round Top Drive 5.2 miles to the top. You can also go up the left side of the park on Makiki Heights Drive, past the Contemporary Museum to the intersection with Tantalus Drive, and turn right on Tantalus Drive to the top. This way, the distance is 4.9 miles from the park at the bottom. The top parking lot is small so I would suggest car pooling. Also there are two or three turnoffs with room for cars on Tantalus Drive just below (Ewa side of) the parking lot. The hike is 2.5 miles in length, of moderate difficulty, and should take us about 1.25 to 1.5 hours. We might hit some muddy spots so don't wear your new, white sneakers.  I can't see anyone getting lost on their way to the start but, just in case, I'll have my cell phone with me: 224-1065.

PAST ACTIVITIES:

BETWEEN A HARD ROCK AND A PLACE

In the late afternoon of Friday, April 10th, 22 Ski Club Members (Yeah, count 'em, 22!!) found themselves between a hard rock and a place.  The "hard rock," of course, was the Hard Rock Cafe, and the place was the corner of Kalakaua and Kapiolani, it's present location.  It will soon move to Waikiki and, thereby, become less easily accessible to us "local folk."   The staff managed to assemble a large enough table to fit us all, and we drank, ate, and socialized to the strains of Elvis, the Everly Brothers, the Beach Boys, and other stars of yesteryear until 7 P.M.   The rock and surfing memorabilia on the walls, not to mention the woody hanging over the bar (which will be absent from the new location), made this an especially interesting place to visit, and, though some of the offerings were a bit on the expensive side,  the quality of the food passed the test.  It was a fun Pau Hana.

HIKE UP PUU PIA
Saturday, April 18th

While the turnout for the Hard Rock Pau Hana may have set some kind of record,  the turnout for the hike up Puu Pia, in the back of Manoa Valley,  did not.   Six hikers for #1 of the KISS Series (Keep in Skiing Shape, not Keep it Simple Stupid) , however, was double the turnout for our last hike, so we are making progress.   Given Manoa's proclivity for overcast skies and moisture, we were truly blessed with a Bluebird day.  Though we didn't see any Bluebirds on the hike (we dont' have them here in Hawaii anyway), we did see, thanks to Kevin, our official club ornithologist,  who pointed it out, a White Rumped Shama sitting on the branch of a tree.  Also, Wanda, our official club botanist, saw both Red and Blue Hibiscus plants.  Unfortunately, she didn't see the large, fallen tree overhanging the trail, and this gave new meaning to the term, "vertically challenged:  Geof and Toby no longer see themselves as vertically challenged---just the opposite.   It was a relatively short hike, just one mile from the parking site, to the top of Puu Pia where we had a beautiful view out over the subdivision, across the University of Hawaii and Waikiki, to the ocean.   We could also look down on the Lyon Arboretum and Paradise Park which were roughly parallel to the summit of the hill.   Hopefully the weather will be equally cooperative for the next, longer, KISS Series hike on Tantalus scheduled for June 20th.
