PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

On my recent trip to Summit County, aside from two days, it’s definitely entering the spring part of the season.  Time to pack up the winter gear until next season and look forward to Ski Week 2010.  Make sure you respond to the ballot for the Ski Week 2010 venue by the April General Membership Meeting.

Within a month, the summer swells will return to town, and our Memorial Day Bike Ride will mark the beginning of summer in Hawaii. Though skiing and boarding will probably be the last thing on your mind, the Board has planned numerous events to tide us over until next season.

Much MAHALOS to departing Board Members; Sam Wright, Linda Giers and Aaron Setogawa whose ideas and efforts helped with a very successful year seeing the membership grow to more than I can ever remember.

For more years than I can remember, Wanda Sowell has been the Club Treasurer. The treasury, under Wanda’s watchful eyes coupled with her ability to curtail some of the Board’s impulsive spending ideas and illogical proposals, is in great shape and has enough funds to weather the rainiest of times. Thanks for the great effort and the Club will definitely miss your services.

Aloha,

GEOF

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GERERAL MEETING AT SAM SNEAD'S TAVERN
April 2 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

You don't want to miss this meeting as it includes the election of Club officers and selection of the venue for Hawaii Ski Week 2010.  Although the formal meeting does not begin until 6:00,  you'll want to get there before 5:30 to take advantage of the 2 (dinners) for 1 (cheap price) dinner special,

PAU HANA AT HARD ROCK CAFE-HONOLULU
1837 Kapiolani Boulevard
April 10 (Friday), 5:00 PM

After riding sick barrels and overhead screamers, drop in at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu for a righteous meal. You’ll be stoked at the "Surfing Wall of Fame” and priceless collection of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia from epic legends such as Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson and much more. The menu here reflects the robust style of great American food seasoned with a healthy dose of rock ‘n’ roll. House specialties include Hard Rock’s famous BBQ ribs, chicken and brisket all smoked in-house in a hickory wood chip smoker, Angus char-broiled burgers, and  awesome thick-frosty shakes and malts. Pick up a t-shirt to add to your collection from the Rock Shop.

The café will be moving to Beachwalk Ave. in Waikiki in summer of 2009 so this will probably be the last time to visit the current location. There is valet and self parking available but unfortunately no “Happy Hour”.  Hope to see you there!!

MANOA VALLEY HIKE
April 18 (Saturday), 9:00 A.M.

Stay fit for next year's ski season by keeping your body in motion. On Saturday morning, April 18, we will hike to the top of Puu Pia, a small hill in the back of Manoa Valley. This is a relatively easy, short hike from the trailhead to the top, but, from the top, after viewing some unique perspectives of Manoa Valley, there will be "Turkey/Eagle" options for the return. Those more adventurous may opt for coming down a steeper hillside, down some old stone stairs, crossing some wooden bridges, ending up on the Manoa Rd. side of the Valley rather than the East Manoa Rd. side where we started, and having a longer walk back to the cars (but really not that far at all).  Whether or not some of us exercise the Eagle option will depend on the weather and the trail conditions. (I've done it in the mud and, believe me, we don't want to go there).  Drive into Manoa Valley on East Manoa Rd. About .8 mile beyond the entrance to the Manoa Marketplace parkingl lot, E. Manoa Rd. goes uphill and ends at Alani Drive. There is a cemetery on the right (last block of E. Manoa Rd.).  Park on either side of the street by the cemetary, and we will walk up Alani Drive to the trailhead.

UPPER TANTALUS HIKE
June 20 (Saturday), 8:30 A.M.

Ski Club members who took this hike (All three of us:  Wanda, Jon, and Yours Truly)  had such a good time on October 18th that we are repeating it ("Deja Vu all over again") for the rest of you.

We will leave from the small parking lot where Tantalus Drive meets (or becomes) Round Top Drive at 8:30 A.M., hike up the Puu Ohia Trail to the top, go down the back side to the Manoa Cliffs Trail, hike out to Round Top Drive, approximately a mile down from where we started, and walk the road back to our cars. There will be some ocean views near the top and views of Manoa Valley from the Manoa Cliffs Trail. To get to the start, go one block mountain direction on Makiki St. from Nehoa St. where you will find a triangle shaped park with a Board of Water Supply pumping station. Go up the right side of the park to the intersection with Round Top Drive on the left, and take Round Top Drive 5.2 miles to the top. You can also go up the left side of the park on Makiki Heights Drive, past the Contemporary Museum to the intersection with Tantalus Drive, and turn right on Tantalus Drive to the top. This way, the distance is 4.9 miles from the park at the bottom. The top parking lot is small so I would suggest car pooling. Also there are two or three turnoffs with room for cars on Tantalus Drive just below (Ewa side of) the parking lot. The hike is 2.5 miles in length, of moderate difficulty, and should take us about 1.25 to 1.5 hours. We might hit some muddy spots so don't wear your new, white sneakers. I can't see anyone getting lost on their way to the start but, just in case, I'll have my cell phone with me: 224-1065.

MORE COMMENTS ABOUT SKI WEEK 2009-JAPAN

What a great trip! The travel connections, events at Sapporo, Niseko and Tokyo , everything went smooth as silk. Wandi and the trip committee that put the event together made it a spectacular event. Actually, the HSC members put the trip "over the top". What a great group. Looking forward to skiing with HSC again.

CAL AND GAIL TOMITA

No Mini-moguls in my paths - yea! Best-ever ski resorts throughout Niseko! Thanks to the micro-chip scanners which forced me to stretch upward to trigger the gate openings at the chair lifts and gondolas, I'm momentarily enjoying instant growth! We did it: We let all throughout the entire resorts at Niseko know that SKI HAWAII arrived when we sounded the bells at Hanazono! Ah, the SUICA Card - best way to navigate the subways to get to our destinations: The Chitose Salmon Aquarium, Bunraku, Ueno Park, Edo-Tokyo Museum and the GINZA! Most of all, I enjoyed all our Skiers AND Non-skiers, plus the ever-so courteous "locals".

JO YEE

VICTORIA WELLER

PAU HANA AT MONTEREY BAY CANNERS

Late Friday afternoon and early evening, March 13th,  approximately 10 die hard Ski Club "happy hourers" braved the traffic and evil portents of "Friday the thirteenth" to imbibe, talk story, and enjoy a sumptuous repast.   We also, saw, at least, a couple of Central Oahu members who don't always come into town for such occasions.   For those of you similarly "geographically challenged," take note that there is another Pearl City area happy hour scheduled for June 12th.

MAKAPUU LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL HIKE, WHALE WATCH, AND PAU "HIKE-A"

On Sunday March 14, approximately 15 ski club members met in the parking lot under the Makapuu Lighthouse and walked up the road (only 3/4 mile "short") to the ridgetop.    What a day for scenery----the sky was clear and we could see up the Windward Coast for miles and miles and miles and miles (sound like a song from The Who?)----we could also see Lanai and Haleakala on Maui to the East.   What a day for whale watching-----we saw at least 4 whales swimming on the Molokai Channel and Sea Life Park sides of the ridge and one member even reported a spout in the distance (which no one else saw and I thought was a "whale of a tale").  Afterwards, most of the "crew" went to Kona Brewery in Hawaii Kai for a few "cold ones," Pupus, and surprise of surprises,  the musical stylings of slack key master Ledward Kaapana, and his band.   Geof and "Yours Truly" so enjoyed the music that we stayed on (and almost closed down the bar?).

TOBY

What a perfectly beautiful afternoon.....a thrill to see those graceful whales frolicking in our deep blue Pacific Ocean, bordered by Makapuu and Kapalua (Maui) --- showing us what life is really all about !!!
