PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Much MAHALOS to the trip committee for pulling off the largest-attended  Hawaii Ski Week: 70 current members participated (that’s half of our club membership!).  However, as one of our members pointed out, I am not able to write, as in previous trips, that none of the members were injured on our trip to Snowmass.   I also really can’t remember when so many of our members were injured on a trip (including me with a broken rib).  However, I am positive that after recovery they will be right back on the slopes again.
In fact, I will be Salt Lake City-bound the first week in March to snowboard again.

Due to a misunderstanding of previous club policies, a lot of trip attendees enjoyed Snowmass so much that they wanted to return next year and were not allowed to vote for it for Ski Week 2011. Consequently, the Board has  decided to add Snowmass to the ballot along with the three top votegetters,  Telluride, Crested Butte, and Heavenly, for Ski Week  2011. Voting instructions are contained under ANNOUNCMENTS in this  newsletter.

Due to the success of this year’s Ski Week and members’ interest, the Trip Committee is considering a second trip for next year.  You will be asked to let the board know if you would join a second trip probably in March 2011.   If there is enough interest in a second trip, trip details will follow after the club members select the venue for Ski Week 2011.

Aloha and PRAY FOR SNOW!

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
March 11 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Note that the meeting has been moved, for this month only, to the second Thursday, rather than the first, due to a scheduling conflict with the restuarant.   If you haven't voted by e mail, this is not a meeting to miss.  This is the meeting where you will have your opportunity to vote for next year's Hawaii Ski Week destination.  We will also be accepting  nominations for next year’s Board of Directors. See more information below  under “Announcements.” ALSO DOUG AND SUSAN WILL HAVE THE SECOND SHOWING OF THE SKI WEEK ASPEN SNOWMASS VIDEO during this meeting.   If you didn’t see this video at the post-ski party, make
sure you see it this time!!!

PAU HANA AT T.Js. SPORTS BAR AND GRILL
March 12 ( Friday), 5:30 P.M.

The March Pau Hana will be at T.Js. Sports Bar and Grill on the ground floor of the One Kapiolani Building which, regardless of its name, is located at 600 Kapiolani Blvd.   This is directly across the street, in the mountain direction, from the old Hawaii Newspaper Agency building,  i.e., right at the confluence of King St., Kapiolani Blvd., and South St,   If you are coming down King from Punchbowl St. and have X-ray vision to peer right through that faux waterfall in the middle of the Street, it is right there.  There is parking at the building with entrances on both King and Kapiolani.   Be there or be square (except for me as I'll be on a second ski trip at that time).

TOBY

SCENIC BIKE RIDE IN WAIMANALO
March 21 (Sunday), 9 A.M.

Meet at Waimanalo District Park, on Hihimanu St., in the parking lot behind the  large sprawling building with red/orange roof, next to the tennis courts.  See map. From Kalanianaole Hwy, at the traffic lights at Waimanalo 5 Shopping Center, turn mauka onto Poalima, which after a block becomes Hihimanu. Street veers left; keep going past Job Corps. The park is just beyond Job Corps. This is an easy ride on flat , paved roads. We'll meander thru the valley past horse stables and plant nurseries and to the base of the Koolaus. Real country! Afterward, we can share snacks at the  picnic tables at the district park. Call Lori Auhll at 521-2458 if you have
any questions.

PAU HANA AT BUFFALO WILD WINGS
Friday, April 9, 5:30 P.M.

Discovery Bay
1778 Ala Moana Blvd.
Honolulu, HI 96815

After much hype, the local franchise of BUFFALO WILD WINGS opened  late July of last year in the location vacated by the Shanghai Bistro.  It has been used a few times for the “Call the Coach” radio show and I have always wanted to check it out but wanted to wait until the “new” wore off.  It is located in the Discovery Bay retail/business area and validated parking is easy to fine and convenient to the pub.  BWW is a casual dining restaurant and sports bar franchise in the United States that is best-known for its buffalo wings.  While the chicken wings are the obvious must try item, the BWW is also known for their Flatbreads. There is a full bar and Happy Hour Specials.  See you there.

ANITA

THE FOUR CHOICES FOR SKI WEEK 2011 are listed below and described by our club members:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CRESTED BUTTE, COLORADO

Crested Butte is considered a true ski town, retaining its small town charm and the adventurous soul that it has always had. With no traffic lights or chain stores and people who openly celebrate life every day, the genuine nature of the community and the pristine surroundings immediately capture you. The ski mountain has a natural character that is exhilarating for any ability level. From
the abundant wide open green and blue groomed trails to more advanced long cruisers and the famous extreme limits of the North Face and Headwall, the mountain has it all.

The sense of exploration continues off the slopes with some of the most diverse and distinctive bars, restaurants and nightlife found in any ski town. Dogsledding, cross-country skiing, winter trail rides on horseback, snowmobiling, and evening sleigh ride dinners (an experience that club members have enjoyed over the years!) From sushi to sandwiches and everything in between, the choice of great places to dine and variety of food types is amazing. There is also live music almost every night at places like the classic Eldo bar or the intimate Princess wine bar on Elk Avenue in downtown Crested Butte. The shopping is also an adventurous undertaking with small specialty shops and galleries to explore, each one distinct in its offerings and style. It is easy to understand how it has been called
"Colorado's last great ski town."
Mountain Statistics: 1165 acres     Longest run: 2.6 miles

AS THE SAYING GOES, IT’S NOT THE SIZE THAT COUNTS; IT’S THE  QUALITY OF THE EXPERIENCE!!!!! When the club visited Crested Butte previously, we had an awesome experience!!

Vertical drop: 3062 or 2775 feet lift-served
Base: 9375 feet     Summit: 12,162     Annual snowfall: 300 inches per year
Trail difficulty: Beginner 23%      Intermediate 57%      Expert 20%
121 trails to ski and board Lifts: 16      Terrain Parks: 3
Getting to Crested Butte: Fly to Los Angeles, Salt Lake City or Denver then connect to Gunnison, CO. Drive from Gunnison to Crested Butte is 25 miles (approximately 45 minute drive).

TELLURIDE, COLORADO

Telluride, the place where Butch Cassidy met the infamous Hole in the Wall gang; where historic buildings are mixed with quaint bakeries and 5-star luxury hotels; and where you’ll get some of the most beautiful scenery in the world!

SKIING at TELLURIDE

Telluride is located in a box canyon in what many consider the most beautiful area of Colorado.  Although traveling takes a little more time and effort, this works in your favor of smaller crowds and lift lines. Awesome terrain boasts some of Colorado’s longest vertical drops (4425 feet). There is every type of skiing from the very beginner to the best extreme skiers. Of the 18 lifts, 14 are high
speed. LACK OF CROWDS mean more vertical feet for you.

Great APRE-SKI. From dive bars, ski-bum bars, brew-pubs, to champagne 4-5 star restaurants.  FREE GONDOLA between the mountain village and the town – 13 min ride. (7 am-midnight) FREE SHUTTLE around Telluride; loops around town in 15 min intervals. This gondola ride is a novelty in itself, with over 50 restaurants in the village.

Mountain Stats: 2000 plus acres      Longest run – 4.6 miles
Vertical Drop: 4425 feet; 3845 feet (lift serviced)
Base: 8725 feet      Top: 12,570 feet
Trail difficulty: 23% beginners      36 % intermediates      41% advanced/experts.
Annual Snowfall: 309 inches
Total lifts: 18 total-   2 High-Speed Gondolas, 7 High-Speed Quads, 1 Fixed  Quad,
2 Triples, 2 Surface Lifts, 2 Doubles, 2 Magic carpets

To get to Telluride: Most likely, a direct flight to Denver, then a commuter flight  to Montrose. 90 minutes bus ride to Telluride. As many people say- it’s hard to get to but harder to leave.

BIGGEST PLUS – COHESIVENESS-THE MEMBERS WILL BE TOGETHER, NOT SPREAD-OUT OVER MILES OF DIFFERENT SKI AREAS.

A SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2011?

We've grown to over 140 members and a lot of interest has been  expressed in offering two or more snow trips for 2011. If you are
interested in participating in a second ski trip (probably in March 2011) PLEASE EMAIL ME at 2xrainbow@gmail.com BY MARCH 11th.

Also I NEED YOUR HELP!  If you would like to volunteer to help with  organizing the trips, please email me at 2xrainbow@gmail.com.

Despite the numerous injuries, the response about the 2010 Snowmass  trip was overwhelmingly positive! 70 people signed up for the ski club package, and we met a few more who dropped in to join us - it was one big party! Many commented on the wonderful Crestwood
accommodations, the great snow conditions, and the availability of numerous activities to all.

SNOWMASS VIDEO OF SKI WEEK 2010
WILL BE SHOWN DURING MARCH GENERAL MEETING

A wonderful video commemorating our Snowmass trip has been put  together by Doug Kazama. Due to overwhelming demand, the video will be re-shown at the March 11 general membership meeting at Sam Sneads – it’s pretty hilarious, so I hope to see you there.
Thanks,

SUSAN
