PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
On Friday over half of our club will be headed to Snowmass and over
the last seven days all resorts in the Aspen area have received over a foot or
more of new snow with a little more this week. The forecast linked to the
resort web site for Ski Week 2010 reads “most of the following week (through the
first several days of February), we may be busy with frequent storms and light
to moderate snowfall each time (I-70 resorts).” Hopefully, this will hold true
and similar to Whistler-Blackcomb in Ski Week 2008 which provided powder for
those who knew where to find it and some of the best snow conditions I’ve
experienced at Whistler.
Though I was three weeks early on my trip to Mammoth, SoCal and Mammoth are
getting dumped on these last two weeks, I was unfortunately pleased to find that
the economy has taken its toll on the resort providing me with little to no
crowds and empty slopes. Their new village was a ghost town, and hopefully, we
will find the same true at Snowmass.
It’s not too early to think of Ski Week 2011. The choice for next year’s venue
will be handled in the same manner as the last five years. A poll will be taken
at the Friday Pizza Party at the end of the Snowmass Trip. The top three venues
will be presented to the general membership upon our return. The general
membership will vote on these three choices to determine the venue for 2011.
Directions for voting will be e-mailed upon our return.
Aloha and PRAY FOR SNOW!

POST SKI TRIP PARTY
February 20 (Saturday) 4:30 P.M.
The Apre (post) Ski Party, as in the recent past, will be held from 5 PM - 9 PM
at Sylvia (Sam) Wright's condo, The Esplanade, in beautiful, uptown Hawaii Kai.
To get to the Esplanade, drive down Kalanianaole Highway to Lunalilo Home Road
in Hawaii Kai, take a left on Lunalilio Home Road and watch out for the
Esplanade which is on the left, across from Kaiser High School. It is the
most prominent building on the near horizon. There are only 12 guest parking
spots at the building but plenty of on-street parking is normally available. The
Party will be held at either the second floor pool area or in a first floor
function room depending upon the weather. Bring a dish to share, your own
beverages to drink, and tennis racket or swim suits, if/as you wish for the
court, pool, and hot tub.

FEBRUARY PAU HANA AND U.H. MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
February 26 (Friday), 5 P.M.
Join us for a pau hana at The Varsity (the old Magoo’s) followed, if you
want, by UH men’s
volleyball against arch-rival BYU at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday evening,
Feb 26. Pau Hana at The Varsity starts at 5 p.m. and the volleyball game begins
at 7 p.m, so those of us who going to the game will depart the The Varsity about 6:30 p.m. Located at Puck’s
Alley, The Varsity is a typical college hangout on King St. just Mauka of the corner of King and University Avenue. Full bar with
daily discounts on food and drink. Plenty of space, pool tables, shuffle
board, darts, outdoor seating, 58 beers on tap, and cheap pitchers! Validated
parking in Puck’s Alley or park at the Sheriff Center and walk to The Varsity.
UH volleyball tickets range from $7 (seniors’ price, upper level seats) to $11
(lower level seats). Purchase tickets in advance online (
http://www.etickethawaii.com/sports.html) or at the Stan Sheriff Center at the night of the match. Although seating is assigned,
there are normally enough vacant seats available that fans can move to sit with
their friends---especially after play has begun.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
March 11 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.
Note that the meeting has been moved, for this month only, to the second Thursday, rather than the first, due to a scheduling conflict with the restuarant. If you haven't voted by e mail, this is not a meeting to miss. This is the meeting where you will have your opportunity to vote for next year's Hawaii Ski Week destination.

PAU HANA AT T.Js. SPORTS BAR AND GRILL
March 12 ( Friday), 5:30 P.M.
The March Pau Hana will be at T.Js. Sports Bar and Grill on the ground
floor of the One Kapiolani Building which, regardless of its name, is located at
600 Kapiolani Blvd. This is directly across the street, in the
mountain direction, from the old Hawaii Newspaper Agency building, i.e.,
right at the confluence of King St., Kapiolani Blvd., and South St,
If you are coming down King from Punchbowl St. and have X-ray vision to peer
right through that faux waterfall in the middle of the Street, it is right
there. There is parking at the building with entrances on both King and
Kapiolani. Be there or be square (except for me as I'll be on a second ski
trip at that time).

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
SELECTION OF THE SITE FOR HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2011
Hawaii Ski Week, 2010 is not too early a time to begin thinking
about 2011. The Secretary will conduct a survey at the Pizza Party
on the final evening, February 5, to determine the three most popular ski areas
for the following year, and these will be announced by the end of
the party. Basic information about the three areas will be presented at
the Post Trip Party on February 20th, and members wishing to "campaign" for
their favorite area will be given ample opportunity to speak.
The Membership can then vote by email prior to March 10 or at the
General Membership Meeting on March 11. Votes by email may be sent to
the Secretary or other board member (See Contacts) before
Wednesday. March 10.
