President’s Message
What a trip! Can’t wait until next year. Though there was a lack of snow there was no lack of fun and excitement. Some of the highlights included:
We even met a transplanted Local girl, part time ski instructor, who graciously took some of us on Sunday’s mountain tour @ Park City. I hope a good time was had by all and I would like to thank the Trip Committee for another successful trip.
Hopefully one more trip to the mountains and the cold weather gear will be stashed and thoughts turn to South shore summer swells.
The Board has a variety of events planned for Spring and Summer and I hope to see you all from time to time.
Aloha,
geof

Comments from Ski Week 2007:
Skiers’ Comments from the slopes:
Toby: What I learned on this trip is that you should never get closer than two feet away from our president, Geof—the Terminator—Chu when you are in the lift line or just on a piece of ground talking.
Darrell: Truly one of the best trips yet, and I hope the club will choose PC/Deer Valley again soon.
Fergie and Paul: Deer Valley was the BOMB!
Carol: Good company, cruise skiing this year – a yearly event I wouldn’t miss.
Alan Johnson: Our side trip to Snow Basin was good times.
Dan and Carole: This was our first ski trip with the Hawaii Ski Club. We cannot thank you enough for the friendships and gracious hospitality we received from everyone. We are looking forward to building friendships and taking additional trips with the club.
Jonathan: The location, accommodations and planning were superb—as was the skiers’ buffet at Stein Erickson’s.
Tennye and Larry: Having the most knowledgeable, amicable, fun-loving roommates: Toby and Dennis. No Ka Oi!
Jim T: Don’t forget to take LONG free bus tours around Park City and the Canyons. (What Jim didn’t mention is that he, Toby and others got on the WRONG bus and road for hours. They finally returned to the condo at 9PM Thursday night. Make sure you read the bus signs, Jim!)
Alan Toma: Park City was the best “spring” skiing I’ve had in February. Weather was great—snow was good even tho’ it was a bit warm.
Lori: In spite of no new snow, Deer Valley was great and good snow conditions were maintained.
Gordon: Just got back form Park City. The most fantastic 2nd week: snowed almost everyday, 23”at Deer Valley. I’m sold on Park City for life and ski Deer Valley. The second week with all the new snow was amazing.
Lennie and Doug: Park City skiing is wonderful! Great ski in-and-out location. Five minutes from the Town lift.
Linda: The lodging was very comfortable and close to the lift. We were also close to many restaurants and shops. The free bus service was absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed Deer Valley the most because there were plenty of runs that suited my skiing level and also I didn’t have to be terrorized by some irresponsible snowboarders (club members excluded). The Canyons was a bit too much for my abilities. Many thanks to Jim Takara for talking me down the steep ones, not once but twice. I really appreciated your patience and advice. Also thanks to my awesome ski buddies for waiting for me to overcome my terror and join them once again.
Jo Yee: Most excitement during this trip was hanging from the Tombstone express lift all the way up. God bless my heroes: Wandi and Ken K.
Teana: 1. Fun trip. Met lots of people too. 2. Perhaps cell numbers should be on the room list just in case. 3. Jo –without the “E”- is my hero!
Norman: Had a great time skiing with old friends and meeting new ones.
Ross: What I remember most: ski members helping and caring for each other.
Dennis: I always have a great time on those trips. End of story.
Helen: Lots of fun things to do in Park City for non-skiers. We found an indoor tennis court and joined a great clinic. The ball bounces high because of the altitude!
Todd and Malia: Todd tried to teach Malia to ski – big failure—but all was saved by patient and skillful Stanley, the PC instructor and now Malia goes to the top of the mountain. Great roommates, great restaurants, great skiing – all made a great trip!
Sam: Forgot to clip boots after lunch and ended up sliding half way down a blue run before putting them back on. Good laugh for all!
Anita and Bill: Awesome spring-like skiing for the first 9 days and then as soon as the club departed, the snowfall began: 9 inches of fresh powder on Sunday in white-out conditions! From spring skiing to true winter skiing conditions overnight! Those who stay an additional week had new powder everyday.
Ski Week 2008 winning location: Whistler-Blackcomb, Canada!
The (early) March general meeting and post ski-week gathering at Sam Wright’s condo complex had a HUGE turnout to share ski experiences and photos, play a little tennis, eat lots of great food (new members wonder how we keep our slim figures?!?!?), avoid the downpour and subsequent ankle-deep water, but especially TO VOTE ON THE 2008 HAWAII SKI WEEK LOCATION. The resounding winner was Whistler/Blackcomb ski area in British Columbia, Canada, with almost double the votes cast for Jackson Hole and Sun Valley combined! GET YOUR PASSPORTS READY since the new law states that anyone traveling outside the USA now needs a passport to exit and re-enter the country.
A special mahalo to Sam Wright who again hosted the post ski-week party which always has a great turnout of old and new club members.

March 23 (Friday) 5:30 PM, Pau Hana at Brasserie Du Vin
Brasserie Du Vin is a new winery on Bethel Street, across from the Hawaii Theater, offering wine and tapas. Dave Stewart, a master of ambience who also owns Indigo and Bar 35, has recreated the feel of a European bistro, complete with a narrow inner courtyard reminiscent of a backstreet cafe somewhere in France, and beyond that, another room evoking a French country tavern. The French-inspired food menu is half off from 4 PM to 6 PM. Valet parking is available at Du Vin's sister restaurant, Indigo, on Nuuanu Avenue.
March 30 (Friday), 5:00: UH Baseball Game against San Jose State and pre-game refreshments
Root, Root, Root for the Home Team......
The UH Rainbow baseball team is winding down a season that will take them to post-season play. It's a good team, a beautiful setting looking out over Diamond Head, and America's pastime!
Join us at Murakami Stadium Friday, March 30when UH opens the series against San Jose State. If you let Wanda know in advance, we can get a bloc of tickets together, at reduced rates if we have 10 or more. Let me know by March 27. ( Contacts or 487-7485). The game starts at 6:35, so let's meet for refreshments at 5:00 at Sweet Basil in Manoa Marketplace. Sweet Basil is a new Thai restaurant with great food at reasonable prices.
April 5 (Thursday) 5:30 PM General Meeting , Sam Snead’s Tavern
Voting for 2008 Ski Club Officers and Guest Presenter: our own Rebecca Horne, UH art instructor and award-winning local artist
To kick off our post-ski-season activities, we are excited to announce we have a treat in store for you at our April meeting. We have a member who is a bona fide artist, and you're probably well aware of the scraps over her paintings if you've been to a recent club Christmas party because ski club member all seem to want her original works.
She's Rebecca Horne, and she's given in to pleas to talk about another aspect of her work as an artist and art instructor: her work “in-residence’ with the prisoners in the Federal Detention facility, “ART IN PRISON.” . If you've missed her prize-winning exhibit at the Art Academy, or other exhibits at HCC or First Friday, here's your chance. Rebecca stresses that this is not a sales event, but a time to learn more about the process of painting and the experiences she encountered while working with felons in prison (what a brave lady she is!!!)
Arrive before 6PM to take advantage of Happy Hour prices on drinks!!!!!!!
Kayaking – April 21, 2007 Kailua Beach Park
Come join fellow club members for an afternoon of Kayaking from Kailua Beach Park. Weather permitting, a short trip out to the Flat Island, the “Mok’s” or a mellow paddle around Enchanted Lake will be planned. A late afternoon/early evening BBQ concludes a day of exercise and holo-holo.
