President’s Message

Hope you all had a great Holiday Season and I hope to see many of you at our future events starting off with our Pre-Ski Week get together at the Honolulu Towers (Wandi’s condo).

I can’t wait until I board next Friday’s flight to Salt Lake City to join 40 other club members on the slopes at Park City. The Trip Committee is finalizing their plans and I know we will all be in good hands. If you can’t make it this year, well there is always next year. As for Ski Week 2008, the destination will be chosen using the same procedure as this year’s as follows:

1. At Friday’s Pizza Party everyone present has the option of presenting their choice of where they would like to see the Hawaii Ski Club go in 2008. If there is a place where you would like to see us go for Ski Week 2008, be prepared to talk about it at the Pizza Party or get one of the members to do so if you are not attending.
2. Following the presentations, everyone present will cast a vote for where they would chose to go. Destinations not presented are definitely eligible. Only one vote per person present is allowed.
3. The top three vote getters will be presented to the general membership for voting. The general membership will be informed of the three choices for Ski Week 2008 promptly upon our return from Park City. Votes can be by e-mailed or casting them at the Post Ski Party/General Membership Meeting to be held at the Esplanade on Saturday 24, 2007.

In closing, the Club extends a big MAHALO to Dave Broederdorf and Amy Bosich. As past President and Coordinator of many Ski Weeks we can’t thank you enough. I hate to say you’ll be missed, because I know this local boy will be visiting you guys in Big Sky soon.

Aloha,

Geof

Recent Events:

The January general meeting had a HUGE turnout to wish Amy and Dave a fond farewell. Thanks to all who wished them Happy (Ski) Trails in the future. Numerous club members have already scheduled a visit to their Montana condo during the 2007 ski season, and wewill always welcome them on future club ski trips and during their return visits to the islands. Once you live in Hawaii, a part of the islands will always stay with you. Aloha, Amy and Broedy!!

Christmas Party: OOPS – we missed the January printing press . . . . A belated thank you to Darrell and Rheta Large for hosting the Christmas party (even though they had concert tickets and missed most of the party!). One of the best attended events of 2006 was on the 16th of December . . . under a starry moonlit night in Hawaii Kai, over 40 members gathered to celebrate the season and view the boat parade on the marina from the Large's house. Several dozen festively decorated boats showed off their holiday colors from jumping dolphins to hula dancers to Elvis (I heard that the paddlers won first place and Elvis came in second). The grab bag had everyone trying to get the best bottle of booze, that coveted Harley-Davidson telephone, or Rebecca’s painting (which is ALWAYS a sought-after gift). Much thanks and many mahalos to Darrell and Rheta Large who graciously opened their house for this annual event.

Lanikai hike and Buzz’s pau hana: Great locations for a mid-afternoon hike and oceanside pau hana at Buzz’s. About 15 hikers were joined by those who only had time (or energy?) for pupus and drinks at Buzz’s. Thanks Craig for organizing this unique activity.

Upcoming Events

Every Monday - TENNIS AT KEEHI LAGOON @ 4:30 p.m.

SKI TRIP TO PARK CITY, UTAH

Here's a preview of the ski trip to Park City:

Park Station, a moderately priced condo/hotel built in 1980, has a fantastic location, within easy walking distance to the Town Lift and at the foot of Main Street with all its shops and restaurants. It's a complex of two four-storied buildings that offers everything from hotel rooms to a 5 bedroom/4 bath unit (2,590 sq.ft.) which is actually a 2/2 and 3/2 bedroom  unit put together. We will be using this unit, with its two kitchens and two living rooms, for our pot luck as well as pizza party gatherings.

Park Station has communal laundry facilities, an indoor sauna and hot tub as well as an outdoor hot tub located between the two buildings. The 2/2 units are 1200 sq.ft. while the 3/2 units are 1390 sq.ft. Cable TV and daily maid service are included. All units will have a fully equipped kitchen, living room with wood burning fireplace, full baths, queen sleeper sofa, and a private deck. The great thing about this condo is that one does not have to take the shuttle at all to get to the slopes or to eat and shop on Main Street, the Historic District.

The free public transit stops just outside our condo to get to the neighboring ski resorts of The Canyons and Deer Valley. There is a ski shop at the Town Lift where we will be able to store ski boots, skis and poles overnight so we won't have to lug any of this equipment from our condo to the lift!

Air Transportation: DELTA AIRLINES, NONSTOP FLIGHTS DEPARTS HONOLULU 2 FEB 2007 AT 11:40PM, ARRIVES 8:42AM SLC 3 FEB, 2007 RETURNS 10 FEB LEAVING AT 1130:AM SLC AND ARRIVING 3:08PM HNL

Also a reminder that everyone going on this ski trip must be a ski club member. Membership dues are $25 for single membership and $35 for a family membership. Make checks payable to HAWAII SKI CLUB and mail to: P.O. BOX 3004, AIEA, HAWAII 96701

Deer Valley Resort (Tuesday Feb 6)

Rated the #1 ski resort in North America by the readers of SKI magazine in 2001 and 2005, Deer Valley Resort, which opened in 1981, is one of the few resorts that does not allow snowboarders (sorry, Shredder Geof and Shredder Dennis). This resort mountain has 19 lifts, awesome terrain which occupies 4 mountains, among them Flagstaff Mountain, Bald Mountain and Bald Eagle Mountain. 15% of the runs are for beginners, 50% for the blue-runners and 35% for advanced. The base is 7,557 ft and the summit 8,149 ft. Deer Valley Resort hosted the slalom, moguls and aerials events in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Come test your skills and see if you can be a future Olympian!

The Canyons Resort (Thursday, Feb 8)

Our Park City ski trip includes a day of skiing and boarding at The Canyons Resort on Thursday, Feb. 8. Located in legendary Park City, The Canyons is one of North America's largest single ski and snowboard resorts, with 8 mountains, 3700 acres of terrain, 152 trails, and........."the Greatest Snow on Earth!" The all-new DreamCatcher lift opens up 200+ acres of pristine glades and natural trails. Our Kauai contingent of members is staying at The Canyons, so we look forward to having a day with them.

On-the-mountain and Apres-ski Activities:

The trip committee has done an awesome (and VERY time-consuming) job organizing activities for club members while we are in Park City. The final list of activities will be distributed at the pre-ski party but they include: NASTAR race, group lunch at the mountain resort followed by group photo, lunchtime and après-ski locations for those interested, wine and cheese welcome party, final pizza party, mountain tour, potluck dinners (including a SUPERBOWL gathering!), etc. Thanks to all trip committee members who spent countless (and seemingly thankless) hours arranging this trip for our group!!!

Post Ski Trip Party: February 24 (Saturday), 3 PM

Esplanade Condo recreation area, Hawaii Kai. Plan on having a great time at this party so bring your tennis racket, swimsuit, best potluck dish, and your appetite!!! BYOB event. This is also an opportunity to share photos of the Park City Ski trip. Thanks to Sam Wright for hosting this post Ski Week party again, but her condo’s rec area is a perfect location for our sports group!

WE WILL BE VOTING ON THE 2008 CLUB SKI WEEK DESTINATION, SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE PRSENT TO ENDORSE YOUR FAVORITE LOCATION AND TO VOTE FOR THE FINAL LOCATION. FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL BALLOT TO NOMINATE AND VOTE ON YOUR DESTINATION CHOICE.

This meeting is also the time to NOMINATE NEW CLUB OFFICERS. Please feel free to volunteer your services or to nominate someone who might be a bit shy to volunteer. Only those willing to serve as board members will be included on the April ballot. Our club needs people with new ideas for different activities, so PLEASE get involved in making our ski club the best in Hawaii!!!!

Directions to Esplanade condo: From Kalanianaole Highway, turn left at the Lunalilo Home Road traffic light. Keep in the left lane and turn left at The Esplanade, across from Kaiser High School (500 Lunalilo Home Road, #43E). If you park in one of the guest parking stalls, you must sign in. You may use the house phone to call Sam (395-9861) for her to come down to let you into the building. You can also park on the street.

March 10 (Saturday); 2:00PM, Makapu`u Whale Watching hike followed by refreshments at ChaChaCha Salsaria in Hawaii Kai

March 23 (Friday) 5:30 PM, Pau Hana at Du Vin

Du Vin is a new winery in the heart of Chinatown (across from the Hawaii Theatre) offering wine and tapas (it’s not really a restaurant)). It’s atmospheric to the max and looks like one is sitting in a sidewalk café in the heart of France. VERY cute place! GREAT French bread too!!

Kayaking – April 21, 2007 Kailua Beach Park

Come join fellow club members for an afternoon of Kayaking from Kailua Beach Park. Weather permiting, a short trip out to the Flat Island, the “Mok’s” or a mellow paddle around Enchanted Lake will be planned. A late afternoon/early evening BBQ concludes a day of exercise and holo-holo.

Announcements:

WANTED: TALENTED, WELL-ROUNDED, ATHLETIC, and /or GOOD-LOOKING PEOPLE OR COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS!

It’s time to recruit members willing to offer their assistance in making our club the very BEST, FUN-FILLED, and MOST ADVENTUROUS Ski Club in Hawaii!!!! You don’t have to be a great skier on snowboarder; just a person who is willing to volunteer time to assist the club.

New blood on the ski board means new ideas and different activities!

The ski board needs people with varied interests and skills: a president, secretary, treasurer, and 4 board members who will work on committees such as planning local activities and major ski trips.

If you wish to volunteer or if you know someone who would contribute to the club, please contact any current board member, email Anita  Contacts, or attend the Post Ski Week party on Feb 24 at the Esplanade.

Activities: The board encourages ALL club members to suggest or host different activities. If there is something that you would like to do, we encourage you to inform a board member or to announce it during the monthly general meeting. Let us know since there are always special things to do in Honolulu that we can do as a club
