PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Talk about "late."  It's almost June, my mango trees have not yet decided whether or not to fruit this year, the termites,  which, by this time, have usually come out and gone back in, are  just starting their night flights (eeeeeech!) , and I'm still getting solicitations from Arapahoe Basin properties to come late season skiing  (wish I could!).

If I wasn't going to be on the Mainland, that weekend,  I would definitely make it to the Pau Hana at Pinky's on June 11.  I can get to Pinky's from my house on Kamehameha Heights just as quickly as I can get to Sam Sneads for membership meetings, and from what I understand,  we will be having two "Mystery Guests" from the Mainland.   One is a current member who joined just last year for the Snowmass trip,  and the other, a former member,  was part of the yachting clique and often graced us with her guitar and folk tunes at Ski Club gatherings.  Any guesses on our "Mystery Guests?"  Come to the Pau Hana and find out.

Our new Board is looking at doing things a bit differently this year, and while it's too early to make  specific long-term promises about the future, 4th of July in Hawaii Kai with food "on the Club" might be a taste  (groan!) of what is to come.   I'm really looking forward to the Polo Match in Mokuleia on August 1.   I've only been to a Polo match once, a long time ago.  I remember it as having been been pretty exciting  and preceded by parachutists landing right in the field  before the match:  I don't know if they still do that.  In any case, the Polo Match, just like 4th of July, will be a "family friendly" event.

I'm also excited about reprising last year's gathering at the Waikiki Aquarium to hear Willy K.  Thanks to the early arrivers who demonstrated some territorialism without apology,  we scored a good spot on the grass at center stage and had the opportunity, as I recall, before the show started, to go inside the aquarium itself (allowable with our tickets) to view the exhibits.   I already have my ticket:  I ordered it via the website last Saturday, and it came on Tuesday.

Hope to see you at the next Membership Meeting at Sam Sneads on June 3.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Thursday, June 3, 6:00 PM, Sam Sneads

Come "grind" (break bread),  "talk story" with your fellow Ski Club members, and learn more about future activities, including, perhaps, an update on next year's trips at Sam Sneads Tavern on the Navy-Marine Golf Course, Valkenburgh St., a short turn off Nimitz Highway (under the freeway) basically opposite the Ewa end of the Honolulu International Airport.  Easy to get-to, plenty of parking, and 2 for 1 dinner specials (If you arrive before 5:30).

PAU HANA AT PINKY'S IN KAILUA
Friday, June 11, 5:30 P.M.

Want to escape the crowds of Honolulu? Then spend time with ski club members and friends at a Friday evening pau hana at Pinky’s Pupu Bar and Grill in Kailua.   Set beside a canal, the restaurant is decorated in art deco Hawaiiana (rattan, canoe paddles, sculptured fish and tiki torches) is brightly lit, even around a horseshoe- shaped bar near the entrance. The family-casual menu is local all the way with an extensive pupu menu. This is a great location for all, including families and those who don’t drink alcohol.

Location: 970 Kalaheo Drive at the intersection of Mokapuu Blvd
Date and time: Friday June 11 (this is a state holiday!) Starting at 5:30 p.m.

BIKE OR HIKE (SOMETIMES JUST WALK)
WITH JON AND MOMI

Having started on May 1 for the next 2 months (May 1 & 29 and Jun 12 & 26), we will meet at Kapiolani Park for some fun and get together.  Jon will head off on some spirited bike rides to Waimanalo-40 miles (or 3x Tantalus), about 3-4 hrs ride (flexible tempo-we'll talk).  Why cycle? Low impact, good for joints (knee rehab), strengthen legs and endurance (aerobic); and most of all spend a "quiet time" with God.  No bike? Join Momi on a walk around the park or perhaps around Diamond head, or maybe hike the crater.  Bring water, hat, sunscreen, and money (crater entrance fee and something to eat afterwards).

Meet @ 6:30 am at Diamond Head side of the park (Paki Ave) restroom.

Then meet or join us at Ala Moana, third floor, center stage, Pacific Tea @ 11:00 am for tea (mango float or lychee sorbet float) or coffee or perhaps acia bowl at Blue Hawaii. We'll talk story or shop, don't be shy! See you there.

4TH OF JULY IN HAWAII KAI
(It lilts and rhymes, doesn't it?)

4th of July gatherings have been a Ski Club tradition for as long as I can remember.  For several years, we held them at Schofield Barracks.   More recently,  we have met for drinks and pupus at Geof's condo in Waikiki and then moved beachside to watch the Ala Moana fireworks show.   This year, we plan to celebrate Independence Day at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai where there will be plenty of parking, entertainment,  food provided by the Club, and the usual, gala fireworks show.   Make plans now to spend 4th of July with your ski club friends.   More details to follow in the next newsletter and/or by separate email.

Come early for a swim in the ocean. Pull your car right up to the field for tailgating. Admission is $8.00 person, $5.00 with military i.d. and children under 14 are free.

Mokuleia Polo Field
