PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
In this, my first message as your new President, I would like to thank departing Board Members Anita Hodges, Wanda Sowell, Wanda Sagum, Craig Shaffer, and James Purvis for their service, welcome back past President Geof Chu who has rejoined the Board as your new Treasurer and Kevin Okawa who is now Vice President. I welcome new Board Members Jenna Surwilo, Jon Kleinschmidt, Momi Kleinschmidt, and Wayne Fujihara, who join our one continuing Board Member who is not in a new position (because she is busy enough in her old one), our Trip Committee Chair Susan Murata. To quote from an old television show, "The Adventure Begins."
It looks like the 2010 ski season has finally wound down. Compliments of Kevin who enjoyed a brief, late season's return to Snowmass, I saw a current picture of the base area, barren of snow (SAD), and Alta, where I skied following our Club trip, despite a remaining 112" of base (one week ago), is now reduced to a weekend schedule.
Unfortunately, I, myself, have now joined the ranks of the Club' skiing/snowboarding injured (torn medial meniscus). Although accidents can happen to anyone, even to those of us who stay (or try to stay) in "top shape," daily exercise, even just stretching and walking, can go a long way towards reducing the probability of injury when we hit the slopes. Although the daily/weekly stuff is up to us individually, the Club will continue to do its part with future sponsorship of and participation in occasional bike rides, hikes, and, perhaps, other similar events which promote health and fitness, and all members are encouraged to suggest or sponsor such activities. If you are planning or wish to plan an activity to which Club members could be invited, don't be shy to let me know. (pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com). We already have small "gangs" of tennis players, hiking enthusiasts, and bikers out there---which is why we continue to have such Club activities.
One of our club's goals , according to our By-laws, is to "operate for recreational and social purposes for the benefit of the HSC membership," and, at our our annual Board Appreciation Dinner, to thank departing and welcome incoming Board members on April 15, we discussed possible types of new events which might better accomplish this goal. Besides health and fitness activities, the Club, for example, in the past, has volunteered it's members for charity events and had groups of members in attendance at concerts from Jimmy Buffet to Willy K, to live performance from the Metropolitan Opera. Again, if you have any ideas, feel free to contact me.
The primary goal of the Club is, of course, to sponsor snow-country trips to promote the sports of skiing and snowboarding, and I am pleased to report that our hard-working Trips Committee is presently looking at an unprecedented three trips for next year. The "big trip" will, of course, be our annual Hawaii Ski Week which, from your votes, will be at Telluride sometime in late January - early February. We are also hoping to sponsor, due to popular demand, a return to Snowmass in February and a spring trip to Tahoe in March for smaller groups. If you can't make one, you might be able to make one or more of the others. Stay tuned.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
BIKE OR HIKE (SOMETIMES JUST WALK)
WITH JON AND MOMI
Starting on May 1 for the next 2 months (May 1 & 29 and Jun 12 & 26), we will meet at Kapiolani Park for some fun and get together. Jon will head off on some spirited bike rides to Waimanalo-40 miles (or 3x Tantalus), about 3-4 hrs ride (flexible tempo-we'll talk). Why cycle? Low impact, good for joints (knee rehab), strengthen legs and endurance (aerobic); and most of all spend a "quiet time" with God. No bike? Join Momi on a walk around the park or perhaps around Diamond head, or maybe hike the crater. Bring water, hat, sunscreen, and money (crater entrance fee and something to eat afterwards).
Meet @ 6:30 am at Diamond Head side of the park (Paki Ave) restroom.
Then meet or join us at Ala Moana, third floor, center stage, Pacific Tea @
11:00 am for tea (mango float or lychee sorbet float) or coffee or perhaps acia
bowl at Blue Hawaii. We'll talk story or shop, don't be shy! See you there.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Thursday, May 6, 6:00 PM, Sam Sneads
We are continuing our tradition of General Membership Meetings on the first Thursdays of the month at Sam Sneads Tavern on the Navy-Marine Golf Course, Valkenburgh St., a short turn off Nimitz Highway (under the freeway) basically opposite the Ewa end of the Honolulu International Airport. Easy to get-to, plenty of parking, and 2 for 1 dinner specials (If you arrive before 5:30). On the schedule will be tentative plans for next year's trips.
32ND ANNUAL VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK
Saturday, May 15, 7 A.M. Ala Moana Beach Park
Hey "SKI Walkers," are you interested in a charity walk in
Waikiki on Saturday, May 15, 2010. It is 6 miles walk that starts at Ala Moana Beach Park, Ala Wai Promenade, Planet Hollywood, Royal Hawaiian Center,
Kuhio Beach Park, Jefferson Elementary School, Waikiki Kapahulu Library, Aqua
Island Colony, Waikiki Beach Walk on Lewers, Halekulani, Hilton Hawaiian Village
Beach Resort & SPA, Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki & Golf Club, Ala Moana Beach
Park (security services) and ends at Ala Moana Beach Park. As we walk from hotel
to hotel there will be refreshments and snacks. Just like Halloween treats.
There will be lunch at the end of our walk.
If you are interested, please let me know. Momi Kleinschmidt (SEE Contacts)
We can arrange a meeting place for everyone to pick up their forms. I would like
to have the completed forms back (signature, check, t-shirt size) by Sunday,
April 25. (I know this is after the deadline, but contact Momi
anyway--maybe something can be done--ed.) We will be wearing "HALEKULANI"
t-shirts. The minimum pledge is $35 for adults and $25 for children under 17.
This is another great time to get together and enjoy our morning walk.

PAST ACTIVITIES:
SKI CLUBBERS GET "BUFFALOED"
On Friday, April 9, twelve ski club members took Geof up on his invitation to a Pau Hana at Buffalo Wild Wings in Discovery Bay, directly across the street from the Ilikai. Parking in the building was free, the wait staff was attentive, the food, especially, the wings, seemed a little overpriced, but it was a good turnout, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Following the "formal" pau hana, six of the particpants kept it going by following Geof back to the absolute decadence of a quiet, candle-lit wine bar in the building on Lewers St. where he lives. As far as I know, we all did find our way home.
