PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Summer’s officially here and it’s my favorite season in Hawaii. Summer swells, long days, BBQ’s at the beach and less traffic.

The trip committee has been meeting and has almost completed arrangements for Ski Week 2008 in Whistler. Planning is way ahead of where we were last year and we will be informing the membership regarding the itinerary shortly.

We have a variety of activities this summer starting with a hike in June and ending with our annual Pool Party on Labor Day Weekend. We will try something different this Fourth of July in that we will hold it in Waikiki which will give us an opportunity to watch the fireworks from the beach and visit the newly renovated Lewers St./Beachwalk Neighborhood.

Hope to see the membership turn out for the scheduled events!

Aloha,

Geof

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

KAWAINUI MARSH HIKE, BEACH

SWIM, AND PAU HANA – June 16

The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 16th. Kawainui Marsh Hike [or walk] one way is a little over 1 mile, mostly flat on a dyke protecting Kailua from floods. Craig will have his van parked at the end of the hike to bring everyone back or just the ones who don't want to walk back to the beginning of the hike. Meet at the Pali Highway side of Kawainui March. From Honolulu, take the Pali highway to Kailua Town, turn around in Kailua, and head back toward Honolulu. Parking is about a 1/8 of a mile past the bridge over the canal on the edge of Kailua Town. Meet at 1 P.M., and the Hike will begin at

1:20.

Following the hike, we will drive over to Kalama Beach Park for a swim in Kailua Bay. There are showers, bathrooms, and a place to change. For those who can't make the hike, you can meet us at Kalama's for the swim between 3

P.M. and 4 P.M.

At 4:15 P.M., , we will drive over to Pinky's PuPu bar and Grill for the monthly Pau Hana. Club members who just want to participate in the Pau Hana can meet us at Pinky’s at

4:30 P.M. Just take the Like-Like Highway to Kailua. The entrance to Pinky’s is just beyond the 2nd red light after passing Kalaheo High School. [970 N. Kalaheo Ave., Pali Palms Plaza.]

Contact Craig if you plan to participate: Phone #261-5989 or email him at Contacts

4TH OF JULY IN WAIKIKI

Our President, Geoff Chu, has generously offered us the use of his Waikiki condominium as a place to eat, drink, and socialize on July 4th prior to the annual, spectacular fireworks display at Ala Moana. From Geoff’s condo, it is a relatively short walk to the beach, where we should be able to view the display away from the maddening crowds which throng to Ala Moana Beach park and Ala Moana Center for the event. Geoff’s Condo is located at 430 Lewers, apartment 30 C, telephone:  921-9945. The building is on the block of Lewers St. between Kuhio Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue and has the first driveway/parking entrance after crossing or making the turn from Kuhio. Look for a tan colored building with the address (430 Lewers St.) on a brown sign tacked to the wall. There are 11 guest stalls available at 430 Lewers and in the building (with auto entrance) directly across the street which is also part of the complex. Additionally, there might be free (because of the holiday) street parking available on adjoining Aloha St. or in the vicinity. Register your vehicle/parking stall in the lobby, ring up Geoff’s unit (using his telephone number above), and we will buzz you in. Bring something to drink, a dish to share, and celebrate the 4th of July with your ski club friends. Call Toby at 224-1065 if you have any questions or need additional directions.

FLAVORS of HONOLULU – July 1

The Flavors of Honolulu, a replacement for Taste of Honolulu, takes place at the Civic Center (the grounds between Honolulu Hale <City Hall> and the Municipal Building, June 29, 30 and July 1, 2007. As a local organization, 100 percent of the funds raised by The Flavors of Honolulu will remain in our community. Flavors of Honolulu will continue to be the premier food and entertainment event, providing a festive multicultural experience for the community. The festival will feature the finest food from a wide variety of the best local restaurants. Featured personalities will include the best in local entertainers and performing artists. Please join Hawaii Ski Club volunteers, for delicious food and drink, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and fun at FLAVORS of Honolulu on Sunday, July 1. After their shift (hopefully at one or more wine tasting booths), the volunteers will informally gather to eat, socialize, and enjoy the live entertainment. Other Ski Club members are invited to join the volunteers to relax and enjoy the festivities. This informal group will meet near Skygate, the big black, modern looking sculpture in the middle of the grounds between the Municipal Building and the Municipal Records and Reference Center, between

3:30 P.M. and 4 P.M. and then proceed to the music stage area.

Bring a beach chair if you wish to be more comfortable when at the entertainment stage and cell phone if you want to locate other ski club members in the crowd. Friends and family are invited to join us. Come to party and support the Flavors of Honolulu and Abilities Unlimited..

WHISTLER SKI TRIP, THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR CLUB YEAR – January ‘08

Your Trip Committee has been hard at work soliciting and evaluating bids for our 2008 trip to Whistler. We are hoping to reach a decision and announce the details, if not before, at our General Meeting on June 7.

It's not too early to check your passport for the trip. You will not be allowed to enter Canada in February without a passport valid beyond August 2008 (probably to guard against passports expiring during the automatic six month period for which visits are approved at entry). Gone are the days when we could order a passport or renewal 6 weeks ahead of travel. Now it takes months. So...check it out...now! Be prepared!

GORDON BIERSCH PAU HANA A SUCCESS

Depending upon how you define “success” (quality and quantity of the alcoholic offerings, quality and quantity of the pupus, quality and quantity of the conviviality, degree of attitude adjustment during and following the process), the May 11 Pau Hana at Gordon Biersch, Aloha Tower Market place was a great success. 8 – 10 ski club members showed up to “convive” and imbibe from 4 to 7

p.m. Fortunately, considering the fact that it was a Friday evening, we easily scored a large empty table outside on the pier as well as friendly, responsive wait staff. For those of you who haven’t been to Gordon Biersch, the micro brews are first rate, the food is good and reasonable, and parking is readily available. Thank you Kathy (Mulledy) for choosing this venue for our May Pay Hana.
