15th TASTE OF HONOLULU – THE DAY AFTER!

Cheers and mahalo to the Hawaii Ski Club members who volunteered at the 15th annual Taste of Honolulu. Fifteen ski club members volunteered this year – more than ever before.  Malia, Todd, and Kathlyn volunteered for the first time, while Wanda Sowell, Kathy M, Lee, Shereen, Anita and Bill have volunteered at least 10 years at the Taste of HNL.  Wanda Sagum, Carol, Fergie, Sam, Dick, and Fergie– all previous volunteers – joined the old-timers and the first-timers while Hans and Amy joined the group later for food and entertainment.

Club members who had worked previous years in wine booths had to advise the new winery reps on how to organize their booths!!! Some long-time volunteers must have a closet full of Taste of HNL tee shirts – a veritable rainbow of colors since every year has a different color shirt!!!

Old timers: remember the first year we were assigned to security, directed traffic into the underground parking lot, and had to argue with those who didn’t understand the “Parking Lot Full” sign?  We had bright red tee shirts with SECURITY across the front.  Did anyone ever have an opportunity to wear those SECURITY shirts again?  Perhaps if we need to get into a sold-out concert sometime......................

All volunteers enjoyed supporting our local Easter Seals' children, eating the variety of foods, listening to music and entertainment, and great people-watching (there are some extraordinary people to check out at the Taste of HNL!!).  And it was also amazing to see how much food the slim ladies in our ski club could consume in one afternoon!

    See you next year!

SEGWAY into the Sunset!!!!

What a perfect way to watch the sunset over Magic Island and Ala Moana Beach Park: on a Segway!!!!! Some of us even took the opportunity to do a few “wheelies” on the beach sand near the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  Special thanks to Wanda Sowell and Kathlyn Wong for organizing this Segway activity for ski club members on June 29 followed by dinner at the Hale Koa Hotel’s Bibas restaurant.

Except for Vel and Jim Kelly who were already Segway experts, the remainder of the thirteen adventurers had to undergo approximately an hour of training to make sure that we were safe to ourselves and to those we encountered on Waikiki sidewalks. Sam enjoyed speed especially going down hill over the Ala Moana bridges, while Pam, Helen, Marion and Anita were a bit more cautious.  Dick made sure that Claire followed the rules and remained safe.

If you get another opportunity, make sure that you take a Segway tour.  Wanda Sagum and Carol Wood claim that their Segway tour of Florence, Italy, was one of the highlights of their European vacation in April.

JULY 23rd Diamond Head Hike - 3:00pm

All those who like outdoor activities but do not want too much exercise can join us at the Diamond Head Hike approximately 3 miles round trip. For those of you who have never been to this Hike ( our fearless President) will enjoy climbing through the bunkers and long staircases up to the top where there is a magnificent expansive view of Oahu's shoreline. We are planning to meet at 3pm at the Kapiolani Community College parking lot across from Diamond Head Theatre. We will then hopefully get into one big truck...Geof Chu's and ride into the crater. It cost $5 to park and $1 to hike...So if we can get into one or two vehicles that would be the best....We will picnic afterwards so bring drinks and food to share. The location of the picnic has not been decided at this time. I will have my cell phone on me so call if you need more information please call, 282-5460.  Bring a hat, sunscreen and a little water as we will be staying at the top for a short time to enjoy the views. This will be a fun event so mark your calendars and come out to spend time with your fellow ski club members...

Any questions please call Kathy Mulledy home phone 423-3190 or cell listed above.

August 11/12 Camping at Kualoa Ranch:

August 11/12: We will be camping in Kaawa Valley at Kualoa Ranch on Friday and Saturday, August 11th and 12th.  There will be a full moon and the peak of the Perseus Meteor Shower.  The camp itself is in a beautiful valley, closed to public access.  We will be in the higher camp which is the choice location.

The cost will be $15.00 per person for the two nights or one only. Amy said it would be great to coordinate food. We hope to find someone to play the guitar for singing.  The minimum number is 15, so please let me know the number in you group at carolw@hgea.net

August 15 Pau Hana at the Bishop Museum:

August 15 Tuesday:  The August Pau hana will be a little different--Moonlight Mele on the Lawn at the Bishop Museum on August 15th.  The Makaha Sons will play.  Delicious barbecue plates, grilled sandwiches, Formaggio light fare, beer and curry bowls form the Willows were the scheduled vendors for the June Moonlight Mele.  When I went last year, the food was truly outstanding.  The fee is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers.  Bring your sand chair!

Announcements:

Activities:  The board encourages ALL club members to suggest or host different activities.  If there is something that you would like to do, we encourage you to inform a board member or to announce it during the monthly general meeting.  Let us know since there are always special things to do in Honolulu that we can do as a club.

Last Ski Run of 2006:  The award for the last ski run of the 2006 winter season (northern hemisphere only – New Zealand and Chile don’t count!) will be a suitably engraved mug, and will be presented at the July 3 General Membership Meeting at the Elk’s Club.  Be there!

New Editor Needed: The current editor is resigning effective with the October newsletter, so a replacement is needed.  Knowledge of Microsoft Word is needed, otherwise there are no particular experience or qualifications required.  Please contact Geof Chu or Anita Hodges if you would like to take on this necessary task.  Mahalo!

Ski trip information:

Ski Week at Park City:

Our annual club ski trip will be at Park City, Utah this coming winter. We will be leaving Honolulu on February 2 at 11:40 PM on a nonstop Delta flight and will arrive in Salt Lake City at 8:42 AM the following morning. Our return nonstop flight leaves Salt Lake City on February 10 at 11:30 AM and arrives back in Honolulu at 3:08 PM. We will be staying at the Park Station Condominium Hotel, located at the foot of Main Street and within easy walking distance to the Town Lift.

The cost of the full package is $1495 and includes the roundtrip airfare with taxes on Delta Airlines, 7 nights lodging at Park Station, roundtrip ground transportation, porterage fee, 5 day lift tickets, lunch on the mountain, NASTAR, and a pizza party. For those who want only the ground portion of the package, deduct $560. If you're not interested in lift tickets, deduct $214. We are still working on lift ticket options and will keep you informed.

Most of the condo units at the Park Station will be 2/2 units, although we are also holding a couple of 3/2 units as well as a 5/4 unit that will be hosting our pot luck and pizza party gatherings.  For those of you who prefer more privacy and would like to have your own 1 bedroom/1 bath condo unit, the cost of the full package will be $1750 per person.

We will have to lock in the Delta Airline seats by mid-July. We have a hold on these seats for the incredible group rate of $560 per person. For those of you who are still undecided about joining us on this trip, you must let us know within 2 weeks if you would like to have the full package. After this deadline, you might still be able to join us but you'll have to find your own air transportation to Salt Lake City and very likely the ground transportation to and from the airport as well. So far it appears that 35 club members will be experiencing the Utah powder of Park City!

By the time you read this article, the July payment will be due.  Please adhere to the payment schedule described below so that we can also meet our deposit schedules for this trip. Thank you!
