PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
President’s Message
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and I hope to see many of you at our Christmas Party on December 16, 2006.
I’ve been a member now for about eight years now and have watched as club membership and participation has slowly declined over the years. Some tell me “it’s just a sign of the times” and that this problem is not unique to only our club. Sure, our annual Ski Week is always well attended, but I am sure that to many, the Hawaii Ski Club sponsors and provides a means for people with similar interests to socialize and to participate in other fun activities.
The attendance at our last five monthly general membership meetings, Pau Hana’s and activities is down to only 10 to 20 percent of the membership and the Board is concerned. We have tried different meeting locations, club sponsored food and prizes with mixed results. Though the activities planned for the Holiday season and thoseassociated with Ski Week 2007 will be well attended, we are thinking past that and are trying to better plan for the so called “flat period” again.
The club membership must decide whether to hold the general membership meeting on a monthly basis or perhaps hold meetings every other month or quarterly. Where to hold meetings is a big question. The Elk’s is a very beautiful venue but many complain it is too far out of the way and free parking is hard to find. Sam Snead’s Tavern @ the Navy Marine Golf Course is another option, as well as member sponsored locations.
Remember, the Board was created to serve the membership’s need and to facilitate an enjoyable experience. As it stands now, we are wondering if we are doing an adequate job.
Any comments, ideas or suggestions to help improve our club and the activities we undertake will be appreciated. Feel free to talk with or e-mail any of us on the Board in regard to this. At December’s General Membership Meeting to be held in conjunction with our Annual Christmas Party, the members of the Board and myself will ask many of you how you feel in regard to the aforementioned problems.
Thanks in advance for your continued support,
geof

November Events
The November events were well attended by our club members. The lure of free food and a drawing for a year’s membership for one lucky attendee brought 18 members to the general meeting at the Honolulu Tower Rec Room on Nov. 2nd. Grand prize winner of the free membership was Tobmeister Kravinsky, known to most of us as “Toby,” who by his own admission “never wins anything.” Well, Tobmeister, your luck is starting to change! Jackie brought desserts of a delicious sugar-free chocolate cake and blueberry muffins “purely sweet nothings” for the lucky few who closed out the meeting.
Executive Chef Bill Rothe once again out-did himself in roasting two perfect turkeys and Sous Chef Rebecca’s ono-delicious stuffing and all the good eats that our 23 club members and more than a dozen of Bill’s biking friends brought made this pre-thanksgiving gathering a feast of plenty . . . actually “too-much”. The view at Bill’s place is breath-taking and the weather picture-magnificent for this event which brings together the camaraderie of the club members, old and new. Thank you, Chef Bill, we appreciate your opening your home to us again!!
In the spirit of giving, 19 members gathered on Thanksgiving morn at the NBC for the annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving meal. We were joined by Park City members, Kathy, John & Michael Ritter, who were here on vacation. We feasted on a very generous and varied array of breakfast items from Shereen’s spinach-phyllo creation to Malia’s deviled eggs to Wanz’ mimosa flavored orange juice to Claire’s chocolate fudge to Kathy’s quiche to Craig’s sushi to Vel’s fruit torte to Anita’s fruit salad to Kathlyn’s breakfast bread and the list goes on and on. Eighteen ski club t-shirt- clad club members then donned their red, green and brown reindeer antlers and spent part of their holiday to feed the less fortunate. Kathy pulled double duty, volunteering with Del to wrap presents for the Salvation Army and then walked the hall pouring beverages. The club has been doing this event for at least the last 14 years and hopefully will continue for the next 14.
