PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Most of the slopes have already opened and Snowmass already has almost three feet of base at the top.  I can’t wait until I’m on one of my all time favorite top to bottom runs.  Along with the Warm Springs Run at Sun Valley,  Ruthie’s Run on Aspen Mountain provides some of the best scenic cruising on wide open groomed terrain.

We have reached our maximum of seventy and the Ski Week 2010 venue provides just about any activity for all interests.  Along with the most skiable acreage of any destination, the shopping and dining will satisfy everyone no matter what the level of ability. Coinciding with the Winter X Games, our trip will also provide an opportunity to watch a world class competition of more than 200 of the best action sports athletes including past Olympians competing in Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snowmobiling  (www.xgames.com).

Prior to our trip, we will have our Annual Christmas Party/Koko Marina Boat Parade at the Large’s home on the water, January General Membership Meeting and Pre-Ski Party.

Aloha,

AIEA LOOP TRAIL HIKE
December 6, (Sunday), 12:30 P.M.

The final Hike of the KISS (Keep in Skiing Shape) series will truly be a Kiss.   Although this will be the second longest (4.4 miles), it will also be the most level, and some of it will be on sidewalk-wide trail.  Much of it will be a "walk in the park" with beautiful mountain views as well as a spectacular view of the H3 heading up towards the tunnel (Ugh!).  The middle and final sections, however, will be typical "Hawaiian style" trail with roots, rocks, and some mud.  How much mud will depend upon most recent weather.  Also,  unless the DLNR has been out with chainsaws for trail maintenance between now and then (in this economy, I doubt it), there will be some fallen trees to step over.  The hike should take from 2.5 - 3 hours.  We will start from/end at the top parking lot in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area at the top of Aiea Heights Drive.   Drive up the hill 2.7 miles from the intersection of Aiea Heights Drive and Moanalua Rd., and you will enter the park.   Drive  up another .5 miles on the park loop road, and you will come to a parking lot with a covered picnic pavilion on the left and a restroom straight ahead.   Park here and look for other Ski Club hikers (or just me) milling around and waiting for you.  If you start going downhill, you've passed us (me).   Afterwards,  I will be open to suggestions on where, in the Aiea/Pearl City area, we might want to celebrate the end of the weekend with a cold one (or two).  Bring your hiking shoes, energy, and good cheer, and we'll see you on Sunday, December 6.   You can call me at 224-1065 (cell) right up until the time we hit the trail (I'll make sure my ringer is on this time).

ANNUAL SKI CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 19, (Saturday, 5:30 P.M.)

Once again, Darrell and Rheta Large have graciously offered their residence at 585 Kumukahi Place on Spinnaker Isle, Koko Marina to host our Annual Christmas Party.  For over five years running, their kindness, hospitality, and location have provided us with one of the best venues for a perfect party.  Held in conjunction with the “13th Annual “Festival of Lights” Koko Marina Boat Parade”, this party is always well attended and one of our most popular events.  Members need to BYOB and bring a dish to share (Pot luck). The ever popular grab bag will take place, and we ask that a minimum $15.00 gift value be followed.

To get to the Larges', turn off Kalanianaole Highway onto Hawaii Kai Drive, proceed approximately .8 mile until you see Pepeekeo St. on the left.  The entrance to Kumukahi Place will be your next right, but there might not be a sign at the corner on Hawaii Kai Drive(there wasn't one last year).  After you turn right, you will immediately come to a T: Take a left at the T and look for the 585 on the left.

HAWAII SKI WEEK 2010 - SNOWMASS

Aloha Everyone,

Our trip date is fast approaching and the word has gotten out the the Hawaii Ski Club is coming to Snowmass. I know that many of you are concerned about our ski and snowboard rentals, lessons, storage and transfers to other slopes.   Below are three selections you can consider to save you shop-around time:

The general rental rates for equipment will run you approximately $45.00 to $65.00 + per day and will vary upon the amount of gear you'll be using.  If you have your own boots, helmets, and basic essentials in your inventory, your rates will be far less.  Multiple day lift tickets save you money.  Ski Lessons (two day) include lift tickets, so consider this in your plans and you can join me in ski classes (yes, I will be doing refresher lessons).

1. I've selected Four Mountain Sports as my vendor of choice. They are offering us a 35% discount on complete rentals, advance reservations for equipment (for those experienced enough to know what their needs will be).  Four Mountain has offered to have a representative at our Welcome Reception & Wine Party (Jan 30) to speak and help with outfitting.  Daily gear overnight storage and transfer to other nearby runs is available at no charge.  Their rental shop is located just a block away from our condo. You can check their website at http://www.aspensnowmass.com/rentals.  Click on Four Mountain Sports.  You can call the store at 970-923-0430.

2. Christy Sports Rentals offers our club a 25% discount off the "Walk In" rental rates which begin as low as $40.00 for the premium ski package. The name brands gear they rent can also be found in other rental shops and services.  They have a rental shop in the Village Mall just a block from our condo and can be contacted at http://rental.christysports.com. Their Toll Free phone number is 877-754-7627

3. The Ski Butlers offers a decadent and pampered approach. They will come to your condo to outfit you, then have the gear delivered to you the next day.  At the end of your trip, your gear is picked up for return to the shop.  They offer top performance equipment and competitive prices.  However, they do not transfer equipment or offer overnight storage. Ski Butler offers our club members a 15% discount on their rentals and can be reached at www.skibutlers.com or toll free 1-877-754-7754 for more information on their packages.

In a nutshell,  these rental agencies are within close proximity to our condo, convenient to get to, and you can use use these stores as a guideline when shopping for your ski equipment rentals or purchases.

Watch for me on the bunny slope and I'll wave as you fly by!

BLACK TURKEY DAY THANKSGIVING FEAST

We have so much to be thankful for, there isn't enough space in the newsletter to list all of our blessings.  On Sunday, 15 November, our club shared in friendship, family, food and culture.  Thank you to Bill Rothe and Rebecca Horne for opening their home to bring together Ski Club members, cyclists and an art group to share in camaraderie, food, and Aloha.  Over 50 people were in attendance, sharing their seasonal recipes to compliment Bill's smoked turkeys.  It was a wonderful event to kick off the holiday season.
