President's Message

The vote was close but Ski Week 2007 will be in Park City, Utah. It beat Jackson Hole, Wyoming by 5 votes. Perhaps one of the members pushing for Jackson Hole may want to organize a spring trip there next year. The trip committee will meet and announce the Ski Week 2007 dates and send out the Requests for Proposal to the tour packagers. Hopefully our early decision will afford us choice accommodations closer to the lifts and hot tubs.

I’ll be off to Mammoth Mountain Resort this weekend and hopefully this week’s bad weather will follow us up to Mammoth in the form of snowfall and POWDER, POWDER, POWDER! It’ll be nice to ride in powder again for the conditions we encountered in Vail were the best of all the trips I’ve been on since joining the club.

My term as president will be up in March along with four board members and hopefully some other members can step up and help plan the direction of the club for the following year. New board members mean new ideas and activities.

Much MAHALO’S to Anita Hodges for a redesigned website and keeping it updated. Now everyone can be better informed and we definitely have a better vehicle to let web users know about us.

Aloha,

geof

Recent Activities:

The highlight of every year is our annual ski trip, so our trip to Vail was the most important event of this month. However, other ski club activities occurred in February.

A special thank you to Sam Wright for hosting the February general meeting /post-ski week party at her condo complex on February 11.  The food was absolutely ONO.  AGAIN Geof grilled the best barbequed meat, while the tables were filled with everyone’s favorite pot-luck dish!!!! We’re not only good skiers/snowboarders but awesome cooks!!!!

Six Ski Hawaii members, Claire, Dick, Amy, Dave, Anita and Bill, attended  Manoa Valley Theatre’s surprisingly sexual “A Little Night Music” on Feb 23 while a large number of die-hards showed up at the Ocean Club pau hana and movie night on Feb 24.

MARCH PAU HANA: Merchant Street Block Party, March 17, 5:30 PM

March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, and the ski club has always enjoyed local Irish celebrations. In fact Rosanne and Lee will be organizing this year’s Waikiki St. Patrick’s Day parade!  One of the best ways to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day is to attend the Merchant Street block party, drink the green beer and enjoy Irish foods. Don’t forget to wear GREEN!!!!

Please meet other club members near the makai side of O’Toole’s Restaurant around 5:30.  In past years, this Irish day block party featured tents for food and drinks in the parking lot at the intersection of Nimitz Highway, Merchant and Nuuanu Streets.  Be prepared for a large crowd of partiers.  Parking should be available at either Aloha Tower or the municipal lot under Harbor Court Building

UNIQUE CHANCE TO VISIT FORD ISLAND by bicycle on Sunday, March 26, 9:00AM

**** LIMITED TO THE FIRST 15 MEMBERS WHO SIGN UP****

Please join us for a unique opportunity to view historic Ford Island by bike.  Ford Island displays many WWII -era resources including Battleship Row with the USS Arizona, USS Missouri, and USS Utah memorials, the original airfield and tower, a collection of bungalows and officers’ housing, and landscaping.  Remnants of bomb craters and signs of Japanese strafing runs are still visible.  But all these historic resources remaining from one of the most painfully memorable events in American military history - the attack on Pearl Harbor - are  being lost through  massive development. This event may be canceled due to rain.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION IF YOU WISH TO JOIN CLUB MEMBERS ON THIS BIKE TOUR OF FORD ISLAND:  We will meet at  Blaisdell Park (also known as Pearl Harbor Park), 301 Kamehameha Hwy at 9:00 am.  This park is at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Kaahumanu Street in Pearl City. We will depart promptly by bike at 9:30 am.  We should return to Blaisdell Park by 1:00pm.

You MUST do the following to be permitted on to Ford Island:

1. Sign up by March 20 with Anita (a list must be provided to the military).  Either sign up at the March membership meeting at the Elks Club, by email (anitah@REMOVECAPShawaii.edu), or by phone (486-8667).

2. In addition you MUST bring on the day of the bike ride: bicycle, a picture ID or military ID, a bike helmet, AND a reflective vest or belt.  If you are missing anyone of these items, you will NOT be allowed through the Ford Island bridge guard entrance.

3. Please also bring a backpack with water and something to eat and drink during a snack/lunch break.  There are NO places to purchase food or drinks on Ford Island.

Announcements:

Ski Club Shirt Order

Since we have a new club name, now is the time to order new club shirts. We are putting together a club shirt order that requires a minimum order of 24 shirts.  Ski club members are always encouraged to wear these shirts to our events to promote the ski club.

Art on Display…….by Wanda Sowell

If you missed out on bringing home one of Rebecca Horne's paintings from the Christmas party,....or even if you did get one....you'll want to see Rebecca's unique and original art on exhibit with a great collection at the Honolulu Country Club.  The HCC, next to the Salt Lake Regional Park, has easy access and convenient parking.  When you step into the lobby, you will be surrounded by a variety of exciting pieces.  Don't miss this opportunity.

WANTED: TALENTED, WELL-ROUNDED, ATHLETIC, and /or GOOD-LOOKING  PEOPLE !!! OR COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS!

It’s time to recruit members willing to offer their assistance in making our club the very BEST, FUN-FILLED, and MOST ADVENTUROUS Ski Club in Hawaii!!!!  You don’t have to be a great skier on snowboarder; just a person who is willing to volunteer time to assist the club.

New blood on the ski board means new ideas and different activities!

The ski board needs people with varied interests and skills: a president, secretary, treasurer, and 4 board members who will work on committees such as planning local activities and major ski trips.

If you wish to volunteer or if you know someone who would contribute to the club, please contact any current board member, email Anita at anitah@REMOVECAPShawaii.edu, or attend the March 2nd general membership meeting at the Elks Club.

 UPDATING SKI HAWAII WEBSITE:

We’ve updated the Hawaii Ski Club website so check it out at  www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com. Since most people are using the internet to search for information, the ski club board eliminated the telephone hotline and now relies on our website for updates, monthly newsletters, and recent photos of club activities.

If you have photos of recent club activities, please email digital photos to Anita at anitah@REMOVECAPShawaii.edu or give her an actual photograph that will be scanned (the original copy will be returned to you).  We especially need a group photo of the recent Vail trip for the club homepage. Not every photo can be included on the website due to limited space, but we will try to highlight a variety of club activities and members.

Information for the Members…the Ski Club does not know this individual and disclaims any knowledge of his reliability:

“Wondering if there is anyone in your membership who would consider a home swap next winter for a few weeks?  We have a lovely log chalet near Whistler. More details can be seen:
