PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Last Saturday, fourteen of us explored the closed Barber’s Point Naval Air Station on bicycles. Despite the flat tires, wrong turns, and hot, sunny weather,  we survived.   It made sucking down “cold ones” on the lanai at Nana’s extra refreshing!

As long as I can remember, there has never been such a long stretch of “Kona” weather. That,  along with the lack of significant South swells, signals a very slow start to summer.  Soon my mango season will be in full production, and even that is a month or so late this year. Regardless, the Board has scheduled many events to tide us thru until nest ski season.  This summer, in addition to the usual seasonal events, we have a sailing outing off Honolulu’s south shore and a Willie K evening concert at Waikiki Aquarium.

Our trip committee has finalized the details for Ski Week 2009 in Aspen/Snowmass and the details will be presented at June’s General Membership Meeting.  You can sign up for the sailing and ski trip at the meeting.

Aloha,

GEOF

UPPER TANTALUS HIKE
June 20 (Saturday), 8:30 A.M.

Ski Club members who took this hike (All three of us:  Wanda, Jon, and Yours Truly)  had such a good time on October 18th that we are repeating it ("Deja Vu all over again") for the rest of you.

We will leave from the small parking lot where Tantalus Drive meets (or becomes) Round Top Drive at 8:30 A.M., hike up the Puu Ohia Trail to the top, go down the back side to the Manoa Cliffs Trail, hike out to Round Top Drive, approximately a mile down from where we started, and walk the road back to our cars. There will be some ocean views near the top and views of Manoa Valley from the Manoa Cliffs Trail. To get to the start, go one block mountain direction on Makiki St. from Nehoa St. where you will find a triangle shaped park with a Board of Water Supply pumping station. Go up the right side of the park to the intersection with Round Top Drive on the left, and take Round Top Drive 5.2 miles to the top. You can also go up the left side of the park on Makiki Heights Drive, past the Contemporary Museum to the intersection with Tantalus Drive, and turn right on Tantalus Drive to the top. This way, the distance is 4.9 miles from the park at the bottom. The top parking lot is small so I would suggest car pooling. Also there are two or three turnoffs with room for cars on Tantalus Drive just below (Ewa side of) the parking lot. The hike is 2.5 miles in length, of moderate difficulty, and should take us about 1.25 to 1.5 hours. We might hit some muddy spots so don't wear your new, white sneakers.  I can't see anyone getting lost on their way to the start but, just in case, I'll have my cell phone with me: 224-1065.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN WAIKIKI
July 4 (Saturday): 5 PM - 9 PM

Geof has again invited us to his Waikiki condominium to celebrate Independence Day.   This is the 3rd year in a row, but the condo has just been renovated  which should make things more interesting:   It will be a "New Place."    We should arrive  at "Party Central" any time after 5 PM on July 4th to  eat, drink, and socialize  prior to viewing the annual, spectacular fireworks display at Ala Moana.  From the condo, it is a relatively short walk to the beach where we will be able to watch the fireworks.   Geof’s condo is located at 430 Lewers, apartment 30 C, telephone: 921-9945. The building is on the block of Lewers St. between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Blvd. and, after making the left turn from Kuhio, is on the left side of the street, at the junction of Lewers and Manukai St. Look for a tan colored building with the address (430 Lewers St.) on a brown sign tacked to the wall. There are 11 guest stalls available at 430 Lewers as well as in the building garage directly across the street from the condo, which is also part of the complex. Additionally, there might be free street parking available (because of the holiday) in the area.  Register your vehicle/parking stall in the lobby, ring up Geof’s unit (using his telephone number above), and he will buzz you in. Bring something to drink, a dish to share, and celebrate the 4th of July with us! Please note that this event will "replace" the  July General Membership Meeting.

JULY PAU HANA AT PINKY'S PUPU BAR AND GRILL
July 10 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.

The Club has always had a good time at Pinky's in Kailua.   From town,  just come over the Likelike Highway,  cross over Kamehameha Highway where Likelike morphs into Kaneohe Bay Drive, and keep going straight.   Kaneohe Bay Drive ultimately morphs into the Mokapu Saddle Rd., and then Mokapu Blvd.   From Aiea side, you might be better off taking the H3 all the way to the Mokapu Saddle Road interchange.   You will find  Pinky's on the far right corner of Mokapu Blvd. and North Kalaheo Ave. right across from from Aikahi Park Shopping Center.  The entrance is actually on North Kalaheo so it requires a  right hand turn onto North Kalaheo and a quick "U-ee" or turn-around to get into the parking lot.

PAST ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT OCEANS 808
(I'M FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES)

Bubbles, bubbles.  On May 15, despite a dress code that required men to wear collars and covered shoes, a whole 27 members showed up at Oceans 808,  just oceanside of the Row Bar in Restaurant Row, for the month's  Pau Hana.   With more and more members showing up for Pau Hanas, maybe we should re-name ourselves "The Hawaii Drinking and Skiing Club."   This was probably the best "bang for the buck" yet.  The covered parking was free, the Pupus were high quality and excellent value for the $, and we had the most attentive wait staff in club history:  Drinks were replenished before the request was finished (Well, maybe not THAT fast---but close).   And the bubbles?   Well, water was bubbling through the wall panels, tabletops, and the counter at the bar to make for a unique visual, if not dizzying, experience.   I'll be back, and this feeling was shared by most of us.

NEW ZEALAND SKI TRIP

Anyone interested in joining me for skiing in New Zealand August 19th thru September 3rd?    This will be my 14th trip "Down Under" for some upside down skiing.   The cost including airfare, 13 nights hotel (12 in Queenstown and 1 in Auckland on the way back),  10 days transportation to 3 of the 4 available ski areas (2 in Queenstown and 2 in Wanaka), 10 days lift tickets to all 4, and transfers between  hotel and airport comes to approximately $3,500 for 1 person traveling alone.   An 11th full day of skiing is possible but would be for additional cost, either on your own or as a 1 day extension to the lift ticket/ski area transportation package.  Also, if you want to take a break, days of skiing can be exchanged, wholly or in part, for such things as jet boat rides on the river, wine tours, etc.  The exchange rate is currently .62 American for $1.00 N.Z.  so everything is pretty reasonable once you get there.    Also, the cost would be less if two share a hotel room---or you go down for a shorter trip.    If interested, give me a call ( number above):   I can give you more specific information and put you in touch with the travel agent.
