PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
After learning about the passing of Michael Jackson, I dug out an old
cassette, and we sat around listening to Thriller and remembered the concert
eleven years ago at the Aloha Stadium. Though I missed the Rolling Stones
concert, the Michael and Elvis concerts along with the C&K concert in Guam mark
my top three. The recent passing of Farrah and Duke illustrates that life
has no guarantees, and at our age, we need to “go for the gusto”.
With that thought in mind, I’ve already paid in full for my trip to Snowmass,
promised myself that it won’t be my only boarding trip next season, and
will maximize my time out in the surf this summer. The trip Committee
already has over 50 members signed up for Ski Week 2010.
I hope to see you fellow members from time to time at the wide variety of events
we have planned this summer which includes hikes, Pau Hanas, Fourth of July in
Waikiki, South Shore Cruise, and (winding up with) our Annual Pool Party.
Got to go - SURF’S UP!
Aloha,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN WAIKIKI
July 4 (Saturday): 5 PM - 9 PM
Geof has again invited us to his Waikiki condominium to celebrate Independence Day. This is the 3rd year in a row, but the condo has just been renovated which should make things more interesting: It will be a "New Place." We should arrive at "Party Central" any time after 5 PM on July 4th to eat, drink, and socialize prior to viewing the annual, spectacular fireworks display at Ala Moana. From the condo, it is a relatively short walk to the beach where we will be able to watch the fireworks. Geof’s condo is located at 430 Lewers, apartment 30 C, telephone: 921-9945. The building is on the block of Lewers St. between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Blvd. and, after making the left turn from Kuhio, is on the left side of the street, at the junction of Lewers and Manukai St. Look for a tan colored building with the address (430 Lewers St.) on a brown sign tacked to the wall. There are 11 guest stalls available at 430 Lewers as well as in the building garage directly across the street from the condo, which is also part of the complex. Additionally, there might be free street parking available (because of the holiday) in the area. Register your vehicle/parking stall in the lobby, ring up Geof’s unit (using his telephone number above), and he will buzz you in. Bring something to drink, a dish to share, and celebrate the 4th of July with us! Please note that this event will "replace" the July General Membership Meeting.

JULY PAU HANA AT PINKY'S PUPU BAR AND GRILL
July 10 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.
The Club has always had a good time at Pinky's in Kailua. From town, just come over the Likelike Highway, cross over Kamehameha Highway where Likelike morphs into Kaneohe Bay Drive, and keep going straight. Kaneohe Bay Drive ultimately morphs into the Mokapu Saddle Rd., and then Mokapu Blvd. From Aiea side, you might be better off taking the H3 all the way to the Mokapu Saddle Road interchange. You will find Pinky's on the far right corner of Mokapu Blvd. and North Kalaheo Ave. right across from from Aikahi Park Shopping Center. The entrance is actually on North Kalaheo so it requires a right hand turn onto North Kalaheo and a quick "U-ee" or turn-around to get into the parking lot.
CRAIG, TOBY
KULIOUOU RIDGE HIKE
July 26 (Sunday) 12:30 P.M.
This, #3 of the KISS Series, will be the longest, steepest (in parts),
and, therefore, most strenouous to date, but Club members who participate will be rewarded
with an absolutely spectacular, close to 360 degree view at the top.
We are doing this on Sunday afternoon for those of you who would have liked to
come in the past but couldn't make it on Saturday mornings.
We will begin the hike at the end of Kala'au Pl. in Kuliouou Valley at 12:30
P.M. From Honolulu, take Kalanianaole Highway towards Hawaii Kai and
take a left at Kuliouou Rd. just before Hawaii Kai (you will see a big green
sign, reading "Kuliouou Rd.," hanging over the Hawaii Kai bound, left lane of the Highway). At the stop sign, .3
miles in from the highway, Kuliouou Rd. takes a 90 degree turn to the left and
then another 90 degree turn to right to go up valley. Follow the
road up the valley for .7 mile (exactly 1 mile from where you turned off Kalanianaole Highway),
and you will see Kala'au Pl. on the right. Turn right, go to the end
where there is a turn-around and a chained-off BWS road, and find a place
to park on the street. The hike will take us up a shaded switchback
route to the ridge bordering the valley, through an Ironwood and Norfolk pine
forest, and to the Koolau summit. The last, approximately 10%, part
of the hike will be in the open, on red dirt trail, with stairs (vertical panels
secured with steel rods in the ground) fashioned into most of the steeper parts.
There are no narrow areas with cliffs (except at the very top), but I would
strongly recommend wearing hiking shoes or running shoes with good treads
for traction on the red dirt areas. If you survived the Koko Head tracks
last year, you should be able to do this without a problem (and with much less
soreness afterwards), but it ain't gonna be no "walk in the woods."
It is 2.5 miles to the top, and took me 2.5 hours total for the roundtrip last week:
I estimate it will take our group about 3.5 hours. Afterwards, we can stop
for a "cold one" (or two) and Pupus in Hawaii Kai. Cha-Cha-Cha
Salsaria (where we stopped after the Koko Head Tracks
hike), and Kona Brewery
(where we more recently saw Ledward Kaapana) are two suggested alternatives. We
can take a vote or follow a dictatorial decision, as appropriate, following the
hike.

Red Hill traffic were treated to the casual west side hospitality of Lily Koi
Restaurant and Lounge in Pearlridge. Featuring a happy hour with $2.50 beer

munched on Furikake Chicken, Short Ribs, Calamari while trading summer plans and
favorite adventure tales.

ASSAULT ON UPPER TANTALUS: PART II
On Saturday morning, June 20th, six club members, Jon and Momi Kleinschmidt, Lori Auhl, Susan Murata, President Geof Chu, and Toby Kravet, together with Toby's friend from Alaska, Michael Welch (Yes, there were seven of us!) reprised the October 18th hike up to the top of the mountain from the Round Top/Tantalus Drive intersect, down the backside to the Manoa Cliffs trail, out to Round Top Drive, and back up the road to our cars. Although the weather looked a little threatening at the start, it cleared as the hike proceeded. Before descending down the backside, you could see right through the notch over the Pali Tunnel to the Kaneohe Bay Marine Corp Air Facility and the ocean beyond, a view which, according to Toby, is not generally available. There wasn't as much mud as the recent rain suggested we might have, young bamboo sprouts along the trail were interesting to view, the group was continuously regaled with Michael's tales of Alaska, and "Chico, the Wonder Dog," whom Susan was baby sitting for the day (Hmmm! Maybe there were eight of us), kept us entertained with his scouting adventures (running point and then coming back to advise us of his findings). It was a nice, leisurely beginning to the weekend. The next hike, Sunday, July 26, in the afternoon on Kuliouou Ridge will be a bit less leisurely and will insure a good, sound sleep Sunday night.

AQUARIUM CONCERT SERIES AND SKI CLUB VOLUNTEERS
Kathy Mulledy, Roger deHay, and Bill and Anita Hodges volunteered at the
Waikiki Aquarium’s Ke Kani O Ke Kai concert June 18 featuring the Brothers
Cazimero. Sitting on the grass, listening to music under the stars (and light
rain) adjacent to the sands of Waikiki– the perfect way to experience life in
paradise!!!!! Four more concerts (and four more times to volunteer)
happen this summer culminating with the Willie K concert on August 13th. If you
volunteer, you get free admission to the concert and a free bento dinner. Check
with Susan Murata if you wish to volunteer. If you can’t volunteer, then join
other ski club members who will be attending the Willie K concert on August 13.

NEW ZEALAND SKI TRIP
Anyone interested in joining me for skiing in New Zealand August
19th thru September 3rd? This will be my 14th trip "Down Under"
(for some upside down skiing?).
The cost including airfare, 13 nights hotel (12 in Queenstown and 1 in Auckland
on the way back), 10 days transportation to 3 of the 4 available ski areas
(2 in Queenstown and 2 in Wanaka), 10 days lift tickets to all 4, and transfers
between hotel and airport comes to approximately $3,500 for 1 person
traveling alone. An 11th full day of skiing is possible but would be
for additional cost, either on your own or as a 1 day extension to the lift
ticket/ski area transportation package. Also, if you want to take a break,
days of skiing can be exchanged, wholly or in part, for such things as jet boat
rides on the river, wine tours, etc. The exchange rate is currently .65
American for $1.00 N.Z. so everything is pretty reasonable once you get
there. Also, the cost would be less if two share a hotel
room---or you go down for a shorter trip. If interested, give
me a call
(see Contacts) ): I can give you more specific information
and put you in touch with the travel agent.
