PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

After a month of partying, it was great to wind down snowboarding in Eastern California.  Mammoth was great as usual, especially since the wind was down the two days I was there.  The view of Lake Tahoe while boarding down Gunbarrel was especially perfect with no clouds in the sky on the day of New Year's Eve.  Each time I went down I stopped near the top of the trail to appreciate the view of the casinos, Lake Tahoe and the city of South Lake Tahoe.  I could even see Kathy and Roger’s condo where I stayed during my visit.

Soon, sixty of our members will soon be off to Ski Week 2009 in Japan.  My best wishes to them for a great and injury free trip.  It looks to be well planned and I commend the Trip Committee for a difficult job well done, accommodating all the different itineraries.

Normally it is our tradition to start the decision process for the following year’s Ski Week venue on the current trip.  Unfortunately the sixty members going on the trip will not have an opportunity to meet as a group to nominate next year’s venues for the membership  vote. Therefore,  nominations for the top three venues for Ski Week 2010 will be held at the Post Ski Week Party/General Meeting on February 26, 2009.  If any member wants to nominate a venue for 2010, come to the party and convince us that it’s a great fit for next year.  A vote among the members present will be held on all the nominated venues and the top three will be presented on a ballot for the general membership to vote on at the April General Meeting.   E-mail ballots will be accepted up to the April General meeting once the top three choices are announced.

As stated in my last message, airfares and oil prices are down.  So make it your priority to go skiing or boarding.

Aloha,

GEOF

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

NEW LOCATION FOR THE JANUARY 23rd PRE SKI WEEK PARTY
THE COMMODORE IN HAWAII KAI

5:30 PM

We are no longer able to hold our packet pickup party in downtown Honolulu because of the Chinese New Year celebrations being held at that same location.  We suddenly needed to find another location for this very important trip event.    Several members of the cavalry came charging to our rescue with offers to help!  Many, many thanks and deep gratitude go to Darleen and Leroy Lopez, Robert Bachini, Lori Auhll, Naomi Hill, as well as Geof Chu, for their suggestions and offers to host our Packet Pickup Party on the 23rd!  However, the offer that worked best for this event was the one we received from Sun Baker and Larry Thurston. Thank you all so very much!

We will be using the party room (with full kitchen!) at Sun's condo, the Commodore in Hawaii Kai, next week Friday, January 23, starting at 5:30 PM.  This meeting room is large enough to accommodate 45 people, with ample street parking nearby too.

Please make every effort to attend this pre Ski Week party on January 23rd.  We will be passing out the trip packets to our members who will be going on the Japan ski trip at this event. We also welcome all our members to participate in this trip sendoff gathering.  Pupus will be served, as well as hot tea and iced tea.

Directions: Coming from town, head toward Hawaii Kai, H1 East, pass Aina Haina into Hawaii Kai, turn Left at Hawaii Kai Dr. (before Roy's Restaurant). Pass 1st signal light & turn Left at the second signal light = Hahaione Street.  Pass first Right parking entrance & turn at the second Right parking entrance = Commodore. You are free to park in any Guest parking stall or park on either side of Hahaione Street near the Commodore.   1) If you are parking at Commodore Guest parking, please register your vehicle at its main lobby and use intercom of Unit PH1 = intercom # 112 for the main door to be opened. Take elevator down to B for basement where the meeting place will be.  2) If you are parking on Hahaione Street, no need to register and follow rest of instruction above.   Phone number
(230-1990) to be let in.

HIKE, WHALE WATCH, AND HAPPY HOUR
March 15 (Sunday) 3 P.M.

Mark your calendar for an outing to Makapuu lookout, Sunday afternoon, March 15.  We plan to take the easy hike up to the lighthouse and beyond to explore the summit, enjoy the great views, and look out for whales. This may be the last chance this season to see whales.  We will start out from the new parking lot at 3 p.m., and after the hike,  head to Kona Brewing Co. in Hawaii Kai for happy hour.  If we are lucky, we will get to hear some music there as we relax and talk story.

PAU HANA AT HARD ROCK CAFE-HONOLULU

1837 Kapiolani Boulevard

April 10 (Friday), 5:00 PM

After riding sick barrels and overhead screamers, drop in at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu for a righteous meal. You’ll be stoked at the "Surfing Wall of Fame” and priceless collection of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia from epic legends such as Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson and much more. The menu here reflects the robust style of great American food seasoned with a healthy dose of rock ‘n’ roll. House specialties include Hard Rock’s famous BBQ ribs, chicken and brisket all smoked in-house in our hickory wood chip smoker, Angus char-broiled burgers, and our awesome thick-frosty shakes and malts. Pick up a t-shirt to add to your collection from the Rock Shop.

The café will be moving to Beachwalk Ave. in Waikiki in summer of 2009 so this will probably be the last time to visit the current location.  There is valet and self parking available but unfortunately no “Happy Hour”.  Hope to see you there!!

MANOA VALLEY HIKE
April 18 (Saturday), 8:30 A.M.)

Stay fit for next year's ski season by keeping your body in motion.   On Saturday morning,  April 18, we will hike to the top of Puu
Pia, a small hill in the back of Manoa  Valley.   This is a relatively easy, short hike from the trailhead to the top, but, from the top, after viewing some unique perspectives of Manoa Valley, there will be "Turkey/Eagle" options for the return.   Those more adventurous may opt for coming down a steeper hillside, down some old stone stairs,  crossing some wooden bridges, ending up on the Manoa Rd. side of the Valley rather than the East Manoa Rd. side where we started, and having a longer walk back to the cars (but really not that far at all).  Whether or not some of us exercise the Eagle option will depend on the weather and the trail conditions.  (I've done it in the mud and, believe me, we don't want to go there).   Go into Manoa Valley on East Manoa Rd.   About .8 mile beyond the entrance to the Manoa Marketplace parkingl lot, E. Manoa Rd. goes uphill and ends at Alani Drive.  There is a cemetery on the right (last block of E. Manoa Rd.).    Park on the street, and we will walk up Alani Drive to the trailhead.

PAST ACTIVITIES:

JANUARY PAU HANA AT THE ROW BAR
(A Toast to the Storm that Wasn't)

The Governor called off work for all "Non Essential" State Employees.  The Mayor called off work for all "Non Essential" City employees.   There was (Yippee!!!!) "No School Today."   --------Yet 9 hardy Ski Club members, including some terribly essential ones, e.g. one half of the Board (The "Designated Drunks?"),  managed to find their way to the Row Bar at Restaurant Row on Friday, Janaury 16th for a few cold ones.  The company, the conversation, the free parking, the happy hour drink prices, and the lack of crowds (probably due to the lack of people who went to work that day)  were all "Coposthetic."  It turned into a pleasant time for all.
