President's Message

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and may I wish the best for you and your families for the rest of the Holiday Season.

It looks like most of the Colorado resorts are now open and I just realized it’s only two months until I will be boarding in Vail.

A vote was taken at the November General Meeting on the motion to change the club name.  We are now officially the “Hawaii Ski Club”.

Our club brochure was finalized and will be printed shortly along with making the final revisions of our new website.

Hope to see many of you at the Christmas Party on water at Darrell’s Home.

Aloha,
Geof

Recent Events

November  was a month filled with well-attended events.  The Willows was a lovely setting for a relaxing pau hana with its great buffet and the Waimanalo Sunset band.  For the Hawaii Railway ride we had members and guests from 3 years old to 94 years young enjoy the ride from the old Ewa plantation area along the coast line to Nanakuli! Jackie Loui’s father, 94, remembered taking comparable train rides when he was a young man. The pre-Thanksgiving dinner was, as always, a hit with lots of food (including 3 turkeys cooked by Bill Rothe!) and a REVEALING game of  I Never….”  A group of ski club members remembered the true meaning of Thanksgiving by volunteering at NBC with the Salvation Army to serve the homeless and less fortunate of our community and to give thanks for all that we have.  Of course this was preceded by a wonderful “tailgate” entirely prepared by Shereen who is a fantastic cook!!!  Thanks to all who participated in these events.

Announcements:

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL DUE :

October was the month to renew your Ski Club membership, so if you have not done so, please renew it now so that you will continue to receive the club newsletter.

Ski Club Shirt Order

Since we have a new club name, now is the time to order new club shirts. We are putting together a club shirt order that requires a minimum order of 24 shirts.  Ski club members are always encouraged to wear these shirts to our events to promote the ski club.

New Ski Club brochure and Redesigned Website:

A special Thank You to Michael Cloe who almost single-handedly worked with David Silva, graphic designer, to produce our first Hawaii Ski Club brochure.  This brochure will be available to all to recruit new members.  It includes photos of club members involved in both winter sports and off-season activities. If you wish to distribute brochures to potential members or know a location that might cater to those interested in snowboarding and skiing, please tell us so that we will give you  brochures.

The newly redesigned Hawaii Ski club website is a “work-in-progress.”  Every day John Orendt, web designer, is adding and updating pages, so check it out at www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com.  Also the ski board has trademarked the new club name and has registered the domain name on the internet, so we’re now officially the Hawaii Ski Club.  Thank you to Dave Broderdorf for suggesting that we keep the name simple and to the point.

Since people are using the Internet more than ever to search for activities and events, the Hawaii Ski Club no longer has a telephone hotline. All activities will be published online at the club website, through monthly online newsletters, or via email updates to club members.

HELP WANTED.......By Kathy Mulledy

The activities committee is looking for ski members to assist with organizing activities and writing up articles about the ski events. It would be nice to get the members more involved and also to get a different slant on what goes on at these events.

Trip to Mammoth Mountain – March 4 thru 11, 2005

So far we have about 12 people have expressed an interest in the trip.  I have sent out some information regarding costs and lodging to the people who have talked with me and if you have not let me know you are interested, please contact me.  Lodging is still available but I will need to finalize by the end of the year.

Both Darrell Large and myself will be renting a SUV(s) at LAX and depart to Mammoth early Saturday morning, March 4, 2006.  The drive will take 4-5 hours and we hope to be in Mammoth Springs by noon.  Anyone one is welcome to join us and the car rental will be split accordingly.  We should make it back to LAX by mid afternoon on Saturday, March 11, 2006.  Other than that, I leave it up to each individual to get to Mammoth Springs.  I have tried to find out about scheduled bus transportation form Reno and LAX and have not been successful.

Mammoth Springs is a substantial town with several large super markets, fast food and motel/hotel chains.  A new village has been built and I looking at condo lodging in or near the village and/or the Canyon Lodge.  My estimate is the total for air and ground to be around $1,200 to $1,300 is you are flying into LAX.
