545-SNOW       Hawaii Ski Association - May 2004

President's Message
Aloha everyone! Let me begin by offering a huge Mahalo to Brodie and Amy, Chris and Marilyn Harris, Bill Rothe, Michelle Hebert and Omer Poirier for their dedicated service on the Board of Directors; and to Craig, Wanda and Honey who're continuing on the Board. I am pleased and honored that you have placed your confidence in me to serve as Club President. I will try to carry on in the tradition of my predecessor, working to broaden membership, preserve and enhance the Ski Week experience, and expand skiing/riding opportunities for faithful members, former members, new members and potential members. The Board and I will also work to revive past Ski Club functions: e.g., Monday evening tennis at Keehi Lagoon. I look forward to renewing acquaintances and participating in the many fun and rewarding experiences during my term. Thanks again.

Fergie

At the April 16th General Meeting at the Elk's Club, the venue for Ski Trip 2005 was decided. Each mountiain was described as follows: Big Sky - Darrell Large; Mammoth - Geof Chu; Vail - Michael Cloe; and Whistler - Obie Olson. Ballots were distributed and a vote was taken. Local ballots were joined with absentee ballots and were counted by Shereen Boyajian and Marilyn Harris. The Results: Big Sky - 27 votes; Mammoth - 3 votes; Vail - 4 votes; and Whistler - 6 votes. So...Big Sky it is! Michael Cloe, trip coordinator, has already started his checklist of preparations for the trip.

General Meeting of April 16th
n addition to the selection of Big Sky for Ski Trip 2005, input on other Club activities was received on the ballots and in discussions. Twenty-five of the 40 ballots cast expressed a preference for a second ski trip during Spring Break: Alayaska -7 votes; Mammoth - 7 votes; Tahoe - 8 votes; and Whistler - 2 votes. There were also 16 ballots that expressed interest in a third trip in August; 4 designated New Zealand. We also got input with regard to Ski Trip activities and more/new Ski Club activities here in Hawaii.

Big Sky information from Ski Magazine
Call it "phenomenal," "fabulous" and "stunning." The superlatives always get a workout when readers describe Big Sky’s Rockies-spanning, Hollywood-set scenery and its miles of epic, uncrowded terrain. But even though it’s one of the country’s largest (3,500-plus acres) and most exciting resorts, it doesn’t test well—just like the kid in your high school class who became a U.S. senator. Call it an anomaly, mixed with legitimate complaints such as "zilch for nightlife" and "tough to get to." Its remoteness—an hour’s drive from the Bozeman airport—looks like a plus from its uncrowded slopes. Big Sky is busy creating more village, with amenities that garner rave reviews: "The Summit Hotel is fabulous," and "Moonlight Lodge adds a touch of class." New West cuisine at Peaks and global fusion at Rainbow Ranch (ask to see the wine cellar) highlight a growing roster of good area restaurants. While the compliment, "Ski, eat, sleep. Repeat. Does it get any better?" can also be viewed as cautionary, the vast majority of Big Sky skiers are big fans of its open-armed friendliness and its big-time skiing. From the cushy all-mountain greens of Morning Star to the great blue altar of Andesite Mountain to the crowning, gut-check steeps of the Dictator Chutes and the Big Couloir, the skiing at Big Sky rules. —J.C.

From the Editor
This edition of our Club Newsletter is somewhat experimental. I have learned how to use this e-mail publishing program and have pieced together the various inputs. I will try to upgrade the content and liveliness of the newsletter in subsequent editions. Also, all members are encouraged to submit articles for inclusion by the third week of the month.
