CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 PM, a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

April 26 (Friday) 4:30 pm  Pau Hana at TJ's Sports Bar & Grill, One Kapiolani Bldg. (see below).

May 2 (Thursday)  5:00 PM  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo.

May 4 (Saturday) Volunteering at Oahu Trifecta, Pre Special Olympics competition for Oahu athletes only (see below).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

At last month's General Membership Meeting our Treasurer, Jonathan Carr, who is also our Nominations and Elections Chair, announced the results of the board election:  Existing board members Caroline Sluyter, Karl See, Mike Tsutsui, and Sandra Robbins were elected for new 2 year terms (thank you "guys" for "re-upping") and Nicole DeWitt was newly elected (welcome Nikki) to round out the board following Nelson Dang's retirement (Mahalo Nelson, for your service).   Of course, Alan Teramura, Mitch Iwanaga, Jonathan Carr, and Anita Hodges automatically continue into the second year of their 2 year terms.   At the meeting I was elected for a new 1 year term as President.  At our subsequent board meeting on April 18, Sandra was elected  Secretary, the position formerly held by Nelson.  To continue "naming names," I'll take the opportunity to welcome new member Peter Kubota from Hilo.  With regard to ski trips for next year, our trip coordinators have been hard at work for several weeks now, and a contract has already been signed for Sun Peaks, January 18 - 25, with flights to Kelowna through Vancouver (for those taking the group air) and bus to the ski area.  Arrangements for condos have yet to be solidified, but the ski-in/ski-out hotel will be the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel.  Preliminary information on Japan has us going to Hokkaido for only one of the two back-to-back trips, a departure from past practice.  The first trip will be to Shiga Kogen in Nagano on the main island February 15-23 and to Rusutsu on Hokkaido February 22 - March 2.  More information on the trips will, of course, appear in upcoming issues of the Newsletter as plans firm up.   Since all of our trips this coming year are out of the country, it might be time to make sure your passport will be current.  Most countries expect passports to be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of your expected stay.  The last time I heard from our volunteer activities coordinator, Mike Tsutsui, we had 14 signed up for the Special Olympics Oahu Trifecta on May 4, we are returning to the Food Bank to help pack food on August 17 and, of course, will be helping the Salvation Army feed the needy on Thanksgiving morning.  Our plan is to have at least one volunteer activity each quarter.  We are tentatively planning to continue our recent tradition of having an outdoor party in July but, this year, a potluck at someone's home:  Stay tuned.   Hope to see a number of you at the (hastily arranged) Pau Hana this coming Friday.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA
at
TJ'S SPORTS BAR & GRILL
ONE KAPIOLANI BUILDING
600 KAPIOLANI BLVD.
HONOLULU, HAWAII
April 26 (Friday) 4:30 pm

At our April Board meeting the suggestion was made for a Pau Hana this coming Friday, and we agreed:  It was about time.  Mahalo to Anita who has reserved a table for us away from the dart boards and other diversions and activities at the venue which might interfere with our "conversations."  TJ's is located on the ground floor of the One Kapiolani Building, that building right in the middle of the fork in the road where, coming down S. King St. from City Hall, Kapiolani Blvd. diverts from S. King St..  If you are coming from this direction, just stay in the right hand lane on S. King St. and, after the bus stop,  turn right into the parking lot behind the building.  If you are coming from the east, access the parking lot from Kapiolani Blvd.  Sufficient  parking should be available and free for Tj's patrons after 4:30 pm.

Hope to see you on Friday.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MANGIAMO BY 604
NAVY MARINE GOLF COURSE
943 VALKENBURGH ST.
May 2 (Thursday) 5 PM

Finally, a General Membership Meeting without anything special going on, but we may have some updates by this time on plans for Hawaii Ski Week 2025 at Sun Peaks.   Although the meeting itself won't start until 5:30 PM, we'd like you to get there a bit earlier so you can get situated and order your food and drink.  We like to get our business out of the way before the live music starts and makes announcements difficult.  If you haven't yet been to Mangiamo, it is opposite the airport and off of Valkenburgh Street which runs between Nimitz Highway (under the viaduct) and Radford Drive.  Drive almost all the way to Radford Drive and you'll see the entrance to the right.  Mangiamo is on the second floor of the golf course's club house.  See you there.
