CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 PM, a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

January 4 (Thursday) 5:00 PM with dinner at 6:00 PM.   Our annual Hawaii Ski Week pre trip party as well as a General Membership Meeting for the entire club, has been moved from the home of Jeff Lilley and Judy Sobin to the Esplanade where we had our Christmas Party.  The Club will provide the main course and sides but we would appreciate your bringing pupus or desert to share.  Also, as usual for Club functions, it is BYOB.

January 19 (Friday) Off to Steamboat.

February 3 (Saturday) 5:00 PM  Japan Pre-Trip Party (potluck) at the Esplanade.

February 10 (Saturday) Off to Furano

February 17 (Saturday) Off to Rusutsu

March 7 (Thursday) 5:00 PM General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I hope you are all having a nice holiday.   With everything else going on in the world, including in the USA, the spirit of the season is a welcome respite.  As I sit down to write this on Christmas day, Steamboat Springs, our destination in a little short of a month, is reporting 10" of new snow yesterday and another 17" today.  Hopefully, it stays cold enough to keep in good condition.  I hear from personal contacts in Utah that it's been a bit warm (up to 40 F at mid day) so the snow has been disappearing a bit and going through daily freezing and thawing cycles with poor coverage near the bottom:  Hopefully, for me, who is going there after Steamboat, the situation improves.   Since last month's newsletter, we have two new members, Robert and Renee Labinson from Wailuku, Maui:  Welcome to the club.   Also, welcome back to all of you who renewed for this present membership year.  We now have about 128 active members.  While our membership year runs from October 2 to September 30, our fiscal year and terms of office for directors run from May 1 to April 30 with elections in early April.  This is not too far beyond the end of the ski season for many of us so it's not too early to start considering, maybe, joining the Board for next year.  The President serves a 1 year term while all other board members serve for 2.  Board meetings, presently by Zoom, are monthly and most board members have one additional duty such as serving as an officer (Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) or chairing Club Shirts, coordinating volunteer activities, etc.  If you can spare a few hours a month and are interested in running for Board, please contact Jonathan or me or come talk to us about it during the ski trips. We always hope (and often pray) that most of our existing board members, especially those with critical duties, whose terms are expiring, choose to stay on, but "life happens."  Finally, I need to mention that this is the last Newsletter until April (to be "published" in late March):  The Newsletter goes on vacation when I do.   Have a happy new year and stay safe out there, both on new year's eve and off skiing.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

HAWAII SKI WEEK (STEAMBOAT) PRE-TRIP PARTY/
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road
HONOLULU, HAWAII 96825
January 4, (Thursday), 5 PM

We are back to the Esplanade, where we had our Christmas Party, rather than Judy and Jeff's home, right down the road, as previously announced. Although the point of the event is to pass out instructions and important information to trip participants, it will also serve as our January General Membership Meeting and all members are invited whether or not going on the Steamboat trip.  Also, Anita has a number of items, serving utensils and the like, which were left at the Christmas Party and will have them, to return to you, at this event.  This is BYOP and or BYOD as well as BYOB.  That means bring a pupu or dessert to share as well as your choice of beverage.  The Club will provide the main course and sides.  To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalillo Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. drive in the mountain direction approximately .8 of a mile, and look for the looming white building complex on the left.  While parking is limited at the building (eleven guest stalls in the circle at the entrance)  there is normally plenty of street parking available on the other side of the street and on side streets off the other side.  The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

We are back to the Esplanade yet again (and thank you, again, Sam)  for the Japan trips Party.  Unlike the party for Steamboat, this is BYOF (bring your own food) as well as  BYOB.  Last minute instructions and related material for the trips will be given.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MANGIAMO BY 604
NAVY MARINE GOLF COURSE
943 VALKENBURGH ST.
March 7 (Thursday) 5 PM

We're back to our normal venue, Mangiamo, for the second General Membership Meeting of 2024 (The first was our Steamboat Pre-Trip Party). Although the meeting won't begin until 5:30 PM, we'd like you to get there a bit earlier so you can get situated and order your food and drink.   If you haven't yet been to Mangiamo, it is opposite the airport and off of Valkenburgh Street which runs between Nimitz Highway (under the viaduct) and Radford Drive.  Drive almost all the way to Radford Drive and you'll see the entrance to the right.  Mangiamo is on the second floor of the golf course's club house.  See you there.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
SERVING AN EARLY THANKSGIVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY
AND PRE-EVENT POTLUCK
Blaisdell Center
November 23

Somewhere over 30 members came for the pre-event tailgate, where the food was ample, and 21, our allotment of volunteers, later waited tables and served an early Thanksgiving meal to Salvation Army guests.  There were more volunteers from the Club than could be accommodated, and Wanda regrets having had to turn them down.  Many thanks to all of you who "made the cut" and, especially, our heartfelt gratitude to Wanda who took over helming the event at kind of the last minute.

WANDA, TOBY

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS  PARTY
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road
December 16

Best Christmas party we've had in years if I do say so myself.  We had at least 60 Ski Club members and their guests at the event, great and plentiful food, lots of great conversation and laughs, and Kathy Mulledy, true to her promise, unlike Yours Truly in previous years, kept the Secret Santa process moving quickly enough to get it completed before a number of us departed for the water's edge to watch the boats go by.  Although the Christmas Boat Parade does not and will not always fall on the same date as our party, if we are fortunate enough to keep having it at the Esplanade, it is a glory to behold, and for those of you who were wondering, an internet search reveals that the Jimmy Buffett boat (May Jimmy rest in peace) WAS the overall winner as we expected it would be.   Thank you, again, Sam (who is fast becoming "Play it again, Sam") for your hospitality, thank you to all  who helped organize it, and thanks to all who stayed a little late to clean up after.
