October 6 (Thursday) Annual Kickoff Meeting for the new Membership Year.  You Supply the drinks:  We supply the food and door prizes.  It will probably be at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor where we held it last year.  Get your checkbooks ready to "Re-up." Stay tuned.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Although summers have traditionally been slow months for the Ski Club, we've had an interesting one this year:  I've managed to get the Club (briefly) lost on two hikes, we've volunteered for the Special Olympics, we've toured a rum distillery, and we've exercised our "pipes" at a karaoke bar.  It's been fun.   Ideas for future activities, especially ones that are out of the ordinary, like the rum distillery tour, are more than welcome:  Just give me a call or shoot me an email.

Meanwhile, it's only six weeks until the annual Kickoff Meeting, the meeting that starts the new membership year.  This is the one General Membership Meeting where the Club provides the food.  You bring a beverage of choice, your checkbook for membership renewal, and, hopefully, a friend who is interested in joining.  Actually, we would prefer that, rather than bring your checks to the meeting, that you send them, along with a newly completed membership form (found on our website), to our mailing address:  Hawaii Ski Club, P.O. 3004, Aiea, Hawaii 96701.  The cost remains the same as it has for a number of years now:  $25.00 for a single membership and $35.00 for a family membership (regardless of size).  What a deal!  In fact, if you win one of the many door prizes, you could look at it as reducing your membership cost, especially if the prize is a gift certificate.  As of  "press time,"  we hope to be returning to  Rainbow Bay Marina at Pearl Harbor (on the water next to the restaurant formerly known as Schooners) where we held it last year.  We'll formerly announce it when it's definite.

Hope to see you at our September General Membership Meeting at Irons on September 1 and other activities that are or will be planned for September.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT BLUE TR0PIX BAR AND GRILL
Pearlridge Center
98-151 Pali Momi
Aiea, Hawaii  96701
 August 26 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

We were at  Blue Tropix Bar and Grill for Halloween last year and were planning to go again on June 24 but ended up at Chez Sports Bar and Grill instead.   This, then, is a "makeup." Blue Tropix is  located in Pearlridge where Denny's used to be, across the street from Chili's and American Savings Bank.  If you are turning in from Kamehameha Highway (not recommended due to rail construction), it is on the right hand side just before the pedestrian overpass.  If you are coming from Moanalua Rd. and turning down Pali Momi in the ocean direction(recommended), it, of course, will be on your left just after the pedestrian overpass.  There's lots of parking including the roof-top and Sears.  Live music, a pool table, a dart room, about 20 TVs, $3.00 draft beer, Happy Hour specials, and onolicious food are the draw.  Check out Blue Tropix on Yahoo.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Irons Table and Tavern
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943 Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
September 1 (Thursday),  5:00 P.M.

Come to Irons Table and Tavern for our September General Membership Meeting.  Although we like to start ordering food and drink around 5:00 P.M., actual Ski Club "business" won't begin until sometime between 5:30 P.M. and 6:00 P.M.  If you are on Nimitz Highway under the freeway structure and going in the Pearl Harbor direction,  you take a right hand turn onto Valkenburgh and look for the entrance, on your right, to the Golf Course.  You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive off of Salt Lake Blvd:  In this case, the entrance would be on your left.  Hope to see you at Irons on September 1.

VOLUNTEERING AT LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS
September 17 (Saturday)

Pack or deliver "Meals on Wheels."  Details forthcoming via separate email.

SEPTEMBER PAU HANA
SHIROKIYA JAPAN VILLAGE WALK - ALA MOANA SHOPPING CENTER
www.japanvillagewalk.com

September 23, 4:00 PM TO 7:00 PM

Don't know how many remember the last pau hana we held at the old Shirokiya Beer Garden a few years ago but is has relocated and is on steroids. It is now located where the old Sears Automotive Shop (Ewa Street Level) was. There is plenty parking but if you haven't been to the new Ala Mo it has changed so check it out and let's meet for drinks. The alcohol is outrageously cheap with beer ($1 pints), wine, and sake available to entice you to sample the many types of food. There are 32 food kiosks serving casual fare, six boutique restaurants, eight bistros, five service counters serving alcohol and two bakeries. PLENTY KINE PUPUS!!

This is definitely not a bar venue but makes up for it in its uniqueness. SEE YOU THERE!

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP YEAR KICKOFF MEETING
October 6 (Thursday)

Come to our annual Kickoff Meeting where we provide the food along with door prizes.  You provide your beverage of choice, your good cheer, and, hopefully, a friend who wants to join.  If you haven't already paid you membership for the coming year, October 1 to September 30, by snail mail to Hawaii Ski Club, Membership, P.O. Box 3004, Aiea, Hi. 96701, you can bring your check and new membership form to the meeting.  The membership form can be found on our website www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com under the "Signup" link on the left of the homepage.  You can copy and paste the form into your word processing program.  Please try to reduce it to one page if you can.  The exact time and venue for the Kickoff will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.  We are trying to get a pavilion at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor where we had it last year. Stay tuned.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2017
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
January 7 - January 14

Hawaii Ski Week 2017 will be at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, January 7 - January 14, and registration is directly with our travel agency for the trip, Ski.com. Click on  https://events.ski.com/GroupListing.aspx . If this does not work, Go online to www.ski.com, click on "GROUPS" at the top of the page, scroll down and click on "JOIN A GROUP" on the right hand side, and our trip should appear with a link to the registration form.  The form will have the prices, flights (may change) and lodging details.  You can view these things after entering your name.  If you don’t want to continue registering, you can log out.

Jackson Hole Resort features 2,500 acres of skiing with an aerial tram which takes skiers 4,139 feet to the top of the mountain at 10,450 feet in 12 minutes. They also have an eight person gondola, and, new for the 2016-2017 season, another 8 person gondola serving the base area, 8 quad lifts, 1 triple and 2 doubles. The club will be staying in Teton Village, which is the name of the area near the lifts. The cowboy/rancher town of Jackson, Wyoming is a 12 mile bus ride away for a fare of $3 one way.

For those of you who like hotel-like accommodations, we have reservations at the Snake River Lodge (SRL). The SRL is very near the aerial tram and 150 yards from the gondola. Your price at the SRL includes daily breakfast and a package of other benefits. We have unbundled the lift tickets, since they are the same price as the ones offered by Ski.com. So, the SRL package price is $844 for a double queen room. The king deluxe is higher, but if we get 12 rooms assigned, it will be a free upgrade.

We are also offering 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos on West Michael Drive in Teton Village. The 4 bedroom Wind River condos are 100 yards from the Moose Creek quad chairlift. The 2 and 3 bedroom condos are 200 yards from the lift. You can also take a free shuttle to the tram station and the base area of Teton Village.  All condos have 1 bath per bedroom. We will try to get the most single beds we can in the condos. The condos are $550 per person for 3 and 4 bedroom and $625 for a 2 bedroom.

The registration and your $200 deposit are due by June 30. We have blocked rooms based on what we think demand will be. To guarantee you get the room you want, please register as soon as possible. That will also help us gauge demand. If you have roommates, please send us a list. Airfare right now is $995. We expect this to come down some, and there may be schedule and airline changes. We will keep you informed about it. Your deposits are fully refundable, and options can be added or deleted, up to September 30th.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Jonathan, trips@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

RUM DISTILLERY TOUR
MAUNALELE DISTILLERS, LLC
92-1770 Kunia Rd.. #227
Kunia Camp, Hawaii  96759

"Yo ho ho and a Bottle of Rum."  I, however, doubt that the sailors in this old story of the sea were tasting anything near as good as the exquisite agricole rum, made from cane juice rather than molasses, that we tasted, all sixteen of us, on Saturday morning, July 16.  Maunalele Distillers, in business for only two years, was the brainchild of two men, one a partner in the adjoining Kunia Country Farms, an aquaponic farm producing products for high end chefs.  The company was initially conceived to produce ethanol for the gasoline industry, but the idea was shelved when the economics didn't compute, and aren't we glad they didn't.  On the tour, actually an outdoor lecture covering the history of rum, the history of cane, relatable Hawaiian history, sustainable agriculture, and the distillation of spirits, we were treated to a comparative tasting of the four rums, two white and two dark, which they produce from distinct varieties of cane brought over by the original Polynesians who settled Hawaii. We then had the opportunity to buy the rum in beautiful designer bottles with prices to match or tee shirts, hats, and other souvenirs:  Some of us bought and some of us didn't.  For the price of $15.00 plus tax, we got the "tour," the tasting, and two free glasses for our future tasting adventures.  I believe we all agreed that this was a morning well spent---definitely a bargain at the Kama'aina price of $15.00.  For those of you who might want go on your own, the tours are on the hour from Wednesday through Saturday, but I would recommend you call ahead.  The distillery is located 5.9 miles from where you turn off the H1 at the Kunia turnoff:  Just look for the flags on the left of Kunia Road, turn left and look for the green building on your left.  You can't miss it.  Thank you Cathy (Lau) for originally suggesting it and Linda (Giers) for getting more of the facts and helping put it together.

PAU HANA AT HONOLULU BEER WORKS
July 29 (Friday)

I arrived at 4 P.M. and sat alone, at a table for eight, in the practically empty brewpub for about twenty minutes before Dan and Linda Giers arrived to keep me company.  By about 5 P.M. there wasn't a table to be had inside or in the alleyways on both sides of the building where they are also set up, and for six of the late arriving Ski Clubbers, numbering fourteen by my count, it was standing room only.  Those of us who enjoy good craft beers were not disappointed, but several of the members would have preferred some mixed drinks, a more extensive wine menu, and more food choices.  Still, everyone seemed to enjoy the camaraderie, and it was nice to welcome aboard new members Bob and Cathy McKee.

WRONG WAY TOBY STRIKES AGAIN
MANANA TRAIL HIKE
August 13

This was the second ski club hike I've led since breaking my hip in 2015 and the second time in a row I've led everyone astray----Everyone, that is, except for the young couple from France who started the trail late  because they had gone back to their car for water, followed the true trail all the way to the shelter, turned around to meet us on the way up, and backtracked with us to the shelter.  Fortunately, the detour was not a steep, slippery uphill like the last one in the woods above the Koolau Golf Course in Kaneohe, and nobody fell over the (almost) cliff which clearly revealed that we were headed in the wrong direction.  As for the shelter, a covered "pavilion" with a park table and attached benches, how did they get it there, 1.25 from the trail head?   We had great valley views as well as views of Pearl Harbor and part of the Waianae Coast.  Out and back lasted three hours including rest stops and, fortunately, despite the recent rains, the trail was dry all the way.  I'll probably lead another hike or two before the end of the year.  I have do one correctly for a change.
