CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Additional events, such as concerts, hikes, excursions, may be added.  Watch your email for possible updates.

Every Monday evening (except on holidays): 4:30 P.M. A group of ski club members and their friends play
tennis at Keehi Lagoon courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and share refreshments afterwards!

August 28 (Friday) 3:00 PM:  Pau Hana at the Monkeypod Kitchen, Ko Olina Resort.

August 29 (Saturday) 9: AM: Volunteer painting project at Linapuni Elementary School.

September 10 (Thursday) 6:00 PM:  General Membership Meeting at Schooners.  This is the second Thursday of the month as the first Thursday, our normal meeting date, is U.H.'s first football game, and we don't want to deal with traffic and possible parking issues as well shortchange those of our members who will be going to the game.

September 17 (Thursday) 5:30 PM:  Board Meeting at Henry Loui's.

October 1 (Thursday)  5:30 PM:  Annual Kickoff Meeting which will be held this year at the U.S.S. Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, 11 Arizona Memorial Pl., Pearl Harbor. The entrance to the Bowfin complex is on the left hand side of the inner road a little before Schooners where we have been having our regular General Membership Meetings.  This is the Kickoff for the new membership year (October 1 - September 30).  We pay for your food, ask you to come with a potential new member, and reward many of you with door prizes.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As I sit here at my desktop on a Tuesday afternoon to begin writing, the rain is coming down again, and I am wondering about the Saturday painting project:  Yahoo weather says thundershowers while The Weather Channel says bright and sunny. Whom do we believe?  Whom do we want to believe?

Hawaii Ski Week continues to take shape with Jonathan reporting 40 members now registered as of last Wednesday and the farewell pizza party planned for John Ritter's home in Park City.  Thank you John (and Jonathan).   All we will need now is snow.  Jonathan goes on to say, "A strong El Nino may or may not bring increased snow to the Wasatch mountains.  That's definite."  There's plenty of snow in New Zealand this year for a change and a very good exchange rate.  Wish I could have gone but-----.  As far as I know, the only Ski Club member to be taking advantage is Dennis Nakaoka who emailed me from Queenstown a couple of days ago.

I'm excited about our venue for the October 1 annual Kickoff Meeting this year at the U.S.S. Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park and grateful to our club Secretary, Paul Ferguson, for suggesting and securing it.  It is outdoors but covered, and barring any accidents to tie up traffic, should be the most accessible Kick Off location, for the majority of the membership, we have had in a while. We will be getting more specific directions from Paul as time goes on but, according to Google Earth, the entrance to the parking lot is only .1 mile from where you turn off Kamehameha Highway onto the inner road on the way to Schooners:  It is well before Schooners.   One of the purposes, if not the main purpose, of the Kick Off is to recruit new members so be sure to invite others who might want to check us out and join.  In a couple of weeks, I will be asking for RSVPs so that we know how much food to order.

Meanwhile, I hope to see some of you at the Monkeypod Kitchen on Friday, Linapuni Elementary School on Saturday morning, and, of course, at the September General Membership meeting on September 10.

A hui hou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT THE MONKEYPOD KITCHEN
KO OLINA RESORT
92-108 Olani St., Kapolei, 96707
August 28 (Friday) 3:00 P.M.

Kind of an early time, but that's when Pau Hana starts at the Monkeypod Kitchen--maybe to lure people out to the west side before traffic starts. Hope some of you non retirees can make it.  There is plenty of free parking and Happy Hour Specials. We went out there last September and, believe it or not, it did not take that much longer for me, from Kamehameha Heights, than it would take to get to an east side location. Visit www.monkeypodkitchen.com/koolina for specifics and directions. Read the on-line reviews.  Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman opened in the Ko Olina resort in December 2012 bringing 36 craft brews on tap served at 29 degrees, kiawe wood oven pizza, and live music twice a day to Oahu’s west side!  Having been there a handful of times for lunch and happy hour, Geoff says the food is excellent, but be warns, "this place is not cheap---you get what you pay for!!

VOLUNTEER PAINTING PROJECT
LINAPUNI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
1434 Linapuni St., Honolulu, 96819
August 29 (Saturday) 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We may need more volunteers to help on a painting project at Linapuni Elementary School. This is an interesting school; an Early Childhood Center serving Pre-K to Grade 1.  Please contact Roy Manzoku, roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com if you want to volunteer for this worthy project.  You can check out their website: http://www.linapuniel.k12.hi.us/Site/Welcome.html .  Following the project, we will adjourn to an as yet undecided venue for lunch on the Club.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
SCHOONER'S RESTAURANT
57 ARIZONA MEMORIAL PLACE
PEARL HARBOR
September 10 (Thursday) 5:30 PM

Come to Schooners for our September General Membership Meeting on the second, rather than our usual first, Thursday of the month.  Though there are no Sunset Specials for dinner, there are special on pupus until 6 PM, and some of us can make a meal of pupus. Members usually start arriving at 5:00 PM.  For those of you who haven't yet been to Schooners, it's right near the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial Place) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with plenty of free parking. See you there.

ANNUAL KICKOFF MEETING
11 ARIZONA MEMORIAL PL.
PEARL HARBOR
October 1 (Thursday) 5:30 PM

Come to our annual Kickoff Meeting at a totally new venue for the event, the outdoor but covered picnic area at the U.S.S. We pay for your food and reward many of you with door prizes.  All you need to bring is yourselves;  hopefully, a friend or two who might want to join;  your beverages of choice;  and your checks for the new membership year.  Actually, it is better if you mail in your checks so as not to unduly tax our Treasurer, Geoff, who is normally grill chef (Geoff the Chef?) for the evening, might accidentally burn your check or coat it with barbecue sauce in the course of juggling his multitude of responsibilities (just joking but----).   You may also want to bring some extra cash as Fergie promises to order some new Club tee shirts for the occasion and will have tank tops and hoodies which we haven't seen for a while.  More specific directions will follow.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2016
January 29 - February 6

We will be going to Park City, Utah for the 2016 Hawaii Ski Week. As many of you know, Vail Resorts has purchased the Park City Mountain Resort. This summer they plan to install an 8 passenger gondola to connect Park City with Canyons Resort, already managed by Vail Resorts. This will create, in their words, the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of terrain. They also plan a new restaurant at the Park City gondola terminus (bottom of Silverload lift), and upgrades to the King Kong and Motherlode lifts. Ski.com will be providing discounted lift tickets, obviously good on both mountains. The adult 5 day ticket will be $330 and the senior 5 day lift ticket will be $250. Ski.com will also provide one day lift tickets for Deer Valley for those of you who want to spend the day there. These tickets will cost $90, which is a good discount from this year’s $115 window price. As we mentioned earlier, you may want to purchase an epic pass from Vail Resorts for the season. These will also be available from Ski.com, but we don’t know the details on this now.

Because you ski club members have stated categorically that ski-in/ski-out access is a priority, we have chosen to stay primarily at The Lodge at the Mountain Village. In addition to ski-in/ski-out access, the Lodge is 20 yards from the Payday Lift, a 6 person high speed lift. There is a mini mall next door with 4 ski shops and some restaurants. The Lodge offers hotel rooms, studio suites, and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos. We have reserved one 4 bedroom condo, four 3 bedroom condos and 4 hotel rooms. The hotel rooms have refrigerators and coffee makers. We say we are staying “primarily” at the Lodge because they do not offer hotel rooms with two beds. For our singles we have reserved some hotel rooms across the street at the Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel. These rooms will have two queen beds. The Park City free shuttle bus stops at the Lodge, and the Lodge also offers free point to point on demand shuttle service. Main Street, Park City, with all its shops and restaurants is about 1/2 mile away. The Lodge features an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, numerous hot tubs, free wireless internet, a fitness center and their own ice rink (for a fee). The Lodge has plenty of meeting space for our traditional reception, pot luck and farewell pizza party.

Our non-stop flights to Salt Lake City are as follows:

• Delta-1104 V Depart: HNL 1/29/2016 09:55 pm Arrive: SLC 1/30/2016 07:11 am
• Delta-1105 V Depart: SLC 2/6/2016 11:55 am Arrive: HNL 2/6/2016 03:35 pm

Since we are arriving so early, and it is only an hour and a half to Park City, one could ski on Saturday, our arrival day. That would give you seven days of skiing.

Of course, transfers to and from the airport are included. Park City is more expensive than Steamboat. We will be paying about $300 to $400 more for a full package. The full package price (air, transfer, 7 nights lodging, 5 day lift ticket) will range from $1,800 to $2,000.

This year we would like to try something different for registration. You will be able to register and pay for the trip online directly with Ski.com, and pay them directly by check or credit card. This will relieve the trip committee of some work, although we will still be responsible for roommate assignments.  Pray for snow.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

LAUGH UNDER THE STARS

Seven members, including "Yours truly" and the instigator of the affair, Cathy Lau (thank you Cathy), turned out for Laugh Under the Stars on Saturday evening, August 1.  In my opinion, a couple of the comedians' "sets" were pretty funny, one of the acts was a little less "family friendly" than advertised,  and the comedy acts were interspersed with band music that was a little less than inspiring.  All in all, it was worth the discounted special price ($10.00) my ticket cost me, and, as usual,  it was good to get together with fellow ski clubbers outside of a meeting setting.  We all left a little earlier than the end.  Also, I left looking forward to the next Waikiki Shell event, Henry Kapono and Friends, Back in the Day, which, considering the talent lineup,  promised to be the same blockbuster it was last year.

HENRY KAPONO & FRIENDS-BACK IN THE DAY
WAIKIKI SHELL

Eight members (one more than for the previous event) came to the Waikiki Shell for the second "Back in the Day" concert, a fund raiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, on Saturday evening, August 22.   The theme, "Back in the Day," was to honor and present the music being played by local musicians in the late 60s and early 70s.  We were hugely entertained by musicians Henry Kapono, Brother Noland, John Cruz, Teresa Bright, Jerry Santos, Cyril Pahinui, Kalapana, Na Leo Pilimehana, and Keola Beamer, laughed and groaned at several comedians including Frank Delima, and, in keeping with the "Back in the Day," theme, the departed Rap Replinger (via video).  We were able score a central location on the lawn directly behind the high priced area with chairs and, fortunately, following a brief sprinkle shortly after the beginning of the concert, stayed dry for the remainder of the evening.  Hopefully, they will do it again next year.  Unless I'm out of town at the time, "I'll be back."
