PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
If you were afraid to approach me about last month's Newsletter, someone else said it for you. Look carefully at the calendar above and the article below and you will see that I have now learned the difference between Chile, the country (as well as Fergie's granddaughter) and chili, the dish.
For me, one of the benefits of belonging to the Ski Club is that I get to go places (besides ski resorts) I would not have otherwise gone and do things that I would not have otherwise done. The Club's Superferry trip to Maui two years ago is a good example, and isn't it lucky that we did it when we did? Another example is the Polo Match in Mokuleia on August 1st: I've always wanted to go up there once or twice during the Polo season but didn't know anyone else who was or would be interested in going. Despite the on again, off again wind and rain that day, it was exciting to watch the game, admire the horesmanship and other skills involved, and experience the whole "pageantry" of the event, all for a paltrey $6.00. Thank you, Jenna, for planning the activity.
The last time I looked, forty four members had already signed up for Hawaii Ski Week in Telluride, and given the economy, the high price of the airfares this year, and fact that we are offering two additional/alternative trips, I am pleased (relieved?) at the turnout thus far for what is our principal event of the year . After eating, sleeping, and family (and, I think, Geof would add golf-ing), what's more important than skiing/boarding? Don't forget that your second payment, and/or initial registration and payment for the other two trips, is due at our upcoming General Membership Meeting on September 2.
Also, don't forget that, if you haven't been keeping in shape, you only have five months to go. Start working on your strength, flexibility, and endurance so that, at the end of the trip, I will be able to echo Geof's mantra of previous years (excepting last year), "It was a good trip--Nobody got hurt."
See you at our meetings and activities.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT SCHOONERS
August 27 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.
Come join the Ski Club's "Pau Hana Hui" for a Pau Hana at Schooners, Pearl Harbor on Friday, August 27th. Relax with a cold one while watching the water lap gently against the boats in the harbor and the sun set slowly over the horizon (Corny, huh?). Schooners is located at 57 Arizona Memorial Road just past the Ford Island Road overpass. Turn off of Kamemeha Highway as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right onto Arizona Memorial Road, drive down the road a short ways, go under the Ford Island overpass, and you will see Schooners on the left. Should be plenty of parking.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AT SAM SNEADS TAVERN
September 2 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.
This is the meeting where you need to make your second deposit for Telluride ($500) and/or make an initial deposit ($100) for either/both Snowmass and/or Tahoe. Although the formal meeting won't start until 6:00, come 5:15 - 5:30 to take advantage of the 2 for 1 dinner specials.

PAU HANA AT MONTEREY BAY CANNERS, PEARLRIDGE CENTER
September 17 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.
Here we go again! Another Pau Hana for those of you so inclined. This is also an evening on which the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball team will be playing BYU (at 7 P.M), Ski Club members have met here before to watch games, and the management might be pursuaded (no promises) to turn on the wide screen. Monterey Bay Canners is located in Pearlridge Center-West. Turn off Kamehameha Highway onto Kaonohi St. and take the first entrance, on the right, into the shopping center which is just behind (Mauka of) Anna Millers. Take an immediate left, go uphill within the Center, and you'll see Monterey Bay Canners on the right. It's kind of easy to get "imprisoned" in the wrong location in Pearlridge Center as not all of the parking areas are connected, but follow my directions, and you should be fine.

MOONLIGHT WALK
September 24 (Friday) Keehi Lagoon 7
P.M.
The Ski Club has been invited to join a group which has been scheduling monthly late afternoon/early evening walks along the seashore and adjacent areas to watch the sunset, watch the moonrise, engage in lively (or not) conversation, and then meet somewhere, hopefully interesting, for dinner. The "moonwalks" (nothing to do with Michael Jackson) are normally scheduled on or within a couple of days of the full moon, are generally 2 - 3 miles long, and are conducted at a pace to encourage conversation. More information, i.e. exactly where to meet and. possibly, the general course of the walk, will be forthcoming
TOBY
ANNUAL KICKOFF MEETING AT SAM SNEADS TAVERN
October 7 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.
This is our annual General Membership Meeting to "kick off" the new membership year (October 1 - September 30. We will be making the new membership form available via the Website and/or the Newsletter, and/or separate email prior to the meeting, and you can bring the completed form and your dues with you. This is the one meeting of the year when the Club buys the food. We plan to reprise last year with your choice of three pre-selected dinners off the menu and will be providing the choices, with an RSVP request, prior to the Meeting. Stay tuned.

RETURN OF THE LEGENDARY CHILI COOKOFF
November 14 (Sunday)
When I first joined the club in the early 80s, the Chili Cookoff was an annual event, a potluck where the more daring, "culinarily inclined" members would bring their homemade chili for entry into the contest with everyone else serving as judges. It was a lot of fun, toasted palates notwithstanding. As I recall, someone (I think named Dennis, but I might be wrong) once cheated and won with Zippy's Chili. I once took second with a concoction I don't want to admit to: I tried to make real chili the next year and wasn't even in the running. Anyhow, we will be holding this affair in the late afternoon/early evening of Sunday, November 14th at a community recreation complex on Waialae Nui, the heights overlooking Kahala Mall. This will substitute for the Pre-Thanksgiving party of immediate years past, but anyone is welcome to bring turkey chili. Stay tuned for further details as the event grows closer.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2011
The trip committee is offering 3 trips for 2011 as
described below. The
official Hawaii Ski Club trip will be the Telluride trip from January 21-January
29, 2011, and as of this publication, space remains available.
At the General membership meeting on September 2 at Sam
Snead’s, we will be collecting the $500 second (or $600 initial and second)
paymentfor Telluride and initial payments of $100 for Snowmass (February
25-March 5) and/or Tahoe (March 18-26).
Due to the necessity to resolve pricing and other issues, signup forms for Snowmass and Tahoe are not yet available but will be provided to the membership, via separate email, prior to the September 2 Meeting.
You must turn in a deposit with your signup form to reserve a space.
************************************************************************************************************
• The Telluride trip starts on
January 21 and returns on January 29.
• 7 nights at the Bear Creek Lodge in
the Mountain Village, all 3 bed/3 bath units.
http://www.bearcreeklodgetelluride.com/
• 5 or 6 days of lift tickets
• Air reservations available on United Airlines
from HNL-Montrose-HNL
• You must sign up AND pay the $100 deposit to reserve
a spot for Telluride
• Your deposit will be refundable up until October 1.
Airfare prices are at its highest ever – air seats won’t be booked until
October in hopes that the airfare drops and we can take advantage of the
possibility of lower prices. The airfare is shockingly high – normally we pay
about $500-600 and the lowest quote we’ve got is $808. If you have mileage
miles, you may want to look into that as an option to keep the costs down.
Stay tuned for any updates as we get them.
Cut
the signup form below from hard copy or copy/paste from this screen and mail in
to the Hawaii Ski Club with your deposit if you can't make the meeting.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
POLO IN PARADISE
On Sunday, 01 August, ten Ski Club members
and guests enjoyed polo in paradise at Mokuleia Polo Farm on the North Shore,
Oahu. Ponies and players from Hawaii took on a team from India.
India was victorious by one point, but they were spotted two based on a handicap.
It was a relaxing event for all who participated, and we hope to do this
again during next summer's matches.
