PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Winter must be coming as I've pulled the season's first issues of Ski, Skiing, and Powder out of my mailbox in the last couple of weeks.  Speaking of skiing,  I recently heard from former Ski Club member, George Privon, who spent ten days, last month, at a training camp on Treble Cone, the New Zealand mountain where I had my "interesting experience" three years ago.   I also heard from Ski Club member Dennis Nakaoka who was boarding on New Zealand's South Island around the same time as George's camp.  Dennis, however, rented a car and spent half the time at what I understand to be small, family operated "ski fields" up in the Twizel area, north of Queenstown.  I think  Dennis has now overtaken me for the "honorary Kiwi" designation:  With my skiing "on hold" for most of the last three years, I believe Dennis has now been down "unduh" more times than I have.

The upcoming Kick-Off Meeting, on October 6 at Rainbow Bay Marina (see below),  is the third meeting we have held at this outdoor venue, and I am looking forward to it.  Paul has been able to secure a pavilion due to his Navy "connections," and Paul and Fergie are bringing the food this year as Geoff, who normally takes on the food responsibility, will be on the Mainland at the time of the meeting.  Fergie will also be bringing Club tee shirts for sale and to give away as door prizes.   Jonathan promises to be back from his other home in Oregon and on hand to answer any questions you may have concerning Hawaii Ski Week this coming year at Jackson Hole.  Also on hand will be Alan who serves on the Trip Committee and has been reporting on trip preparations in Jonathan's absence, and, I hope, Roy who has been doing a "bang up" job  the past several years in coordinating our well attended volunteer activities painting schools, feeding the needy, and helping out at the Special Olympics.  These are the activities that are visible:  Invisible to the membership are the duties of Treasurer (Geoff), banking and generating financial reports; Secretary (Paul), taking minutes at meetings; and the duties of just being a Board Member and giving up personal time to attend monthly Board Meetings to consider and vote on issues concerning Club policy and operations.   Board Members, listed at the top of the Newsletter, are, of course, all volunteers:  Thank them for their service when you see them at the Kick-Off and/or other Ski Club functions and activities.

Hope to see you on October 6.

A hue hou kakou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

ANNUAL KICKOFF MEETING
RAINBOW BAY MARINA
(next to Schooner's)
PEARL HARBOR
October 6 (Thursday) 5:00 PM

Come to our annual Kickoff Meeting at the Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor. This is the outdoor picnic area with cabanas on the right hand side (facing towards the ocean) of the restaurant formerly known as Schooner's where we held our General Membership Meetings while Seven Palms at the  Navy-Marine Golf Course was being renovated and becoming Irons. For those of you who have not been to a General Membership Meeting and are not familiar with the area, take the exit off the H1 in Aiea or the airport viaduct, traveling west, to Kamehameha Highway. The signs on Kamehameha Highway should indicate that you are going towards Aloha Stadium. If you are coming from the airport viaduct, look for Radford Drive on your right, and the second left hand turn after Radford Drive will be preceded by a sign reading "Pearl Harbor Historic Sights:" That's where your turn across Kamehameha Highway and into Pearl Harbor on the left. For those of you coming from the Aiea/H1 side, pass the stadium to your left and take the first right after the exit to the Ford Island bridge. Once you turn into Pearl Harbor, towards the water, as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road, and drive under the Ford Island overpass (approximately 1/4 mile from where you turned onto the inner road). Park in the lot at or just after Restaurant 604.  This is the one General Membership Meeting of the year when  we pay for the food.  We also reward many of you with door prizes.  All you need to bring is yourselves; hopefully, a friend or two who might want to join; your beverage of choice; and your membership form and check for the new membership year.  Actually, it is better if you mail in your form and check to  Hawaii Ski Club-Membership, P.O. Box P.O Box 3004, Aiea, Hi. 96701-8504. The Membership/Renewal form can be found on our website  www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com  under "Sign Up."

You may also want to bring some extra cash as Fergie will have Club tee shirts for sale. Please email me pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , with the number in your party, no later than Monday evening, October 3,  so we know how much food to supply. Also, no beach chairs or glass containers are allowed: If your beverage of choice comes in a glass bottle, be sure to bring some cups for consumption.

See you at the Kick-Off.

HIKE ON LOWER TANTALUS TRAILS
FROM PU'U UALAKA'A STATE PARK
October 15 (Saturday)  9:00 A.M.

We've done this one before, but I looked and couldn't find the write-up (like I usually do to save myself time).   We will access the trail system from Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park, hike down to the level of the Nature Center, hike up a trail to the other side of Makiki Valley, and cross over to where we began the descent.  This is a, approximately, 3.5 mile loop and should take us about 2.5 hours.  Parts of the trail will have roots underfoot, expect a few rocky areas to climb over, and be prepared for some muddy sections and, perhaps, one or two spots where you'll have to put one foot in the water (unless they've fixed the bridges).  Also, there will be some steep spots both coming down and going up.  If you're so inclined to research the area, we will be on the Ualaka'a, Maunalaha, and Kaneaole trails.  To get to Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park, turn off Nehoa St. onto Makiki St. in the mountain direction,  follow Makiki Street past the park and pumping station on the left to Round Top Drive (a little over .1 miles), go up Round Top Drive about 2.5 miles, and you will see the entrance to Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park and Nutridge Estate on the left at an elbow turn in the road.  Right after you've turned into the entrance, take a left and follow it up the first parking lot.  Wear hiking or trail running shoes with a good tread pattern, and you might want to bring hiking poles if you have them.  See you on the "mountain."

PAU HANA AT BLUE TR0PIX BAR AND GRILL
Pearlridge Center
98-151 Pali Momi
Aiea, Hawaii  96701
 October 28  (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

The third time will be the charm.  Following two cancellations,  We WILL go to Blue Tropix this time for sure.  Blue Tropix is located in Pearlridge where Denny's used to be, across the street from Chili's and American Savings Bank.  If you are turning in from Kamehameha Highway, it is on the right hand side just before the pedestrian overpass.  If you are coming from Moanalua Rd. (recommended due to traffic considerations) and turning down Pali Momi in the ocean direction, it, of course, will be on your left just after the pedestrian overpass.  There's lots of parking including the roof-top and Sears.  Live music, a pool table, a dart room, about 20 TVs, $3.00 draft beer, Happy Hour specials, and onolicious food are the draw.  Check out Blue Tropix on Yahoo.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Irons Table and Tavern
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943 Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
November 3 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.

Come to Irons Table and Tavern for our November General Membership Meeting.  Although we like to start ordering food and drink around 5:00 P.M., actual Ski Club "business" won't begin until sometime between 5:30 P.M. and 6:00 P.M.  If you are on Nimitz Highway under the freeway structure and going in the Pearl Harbor direction,  you take a right hand turn onto Valkenburgh and look for the entrance, on your right, to the Golf Course.  You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive off of Salt Lake Blvd:  In this case, the entrance would be on your left.  Hope to see you at Irons on November 3.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2017
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
January 7 - January 14

Hawaii Ski Week 2017 will be at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, January 7 - January 14, and registration is directly with our travel agency for the trip, Ski.com. Click on  https://events.ski.com/GroupListing.aspx . If this does not work, Go online to www.ski.com, click on "GROUPS" at the top of the page, scroll down and click on "JOIN A GROUP" on the right hand side, and our trip should appear with a link to the registration form.  The form will have the prices, flights (may change) and lodging details.  You can view these things after entering your name.  If you don’t want to continue registering, you can log out.

Jackson Hole Resort features 2,500 acres of skiing with an aerial tram which takes skiers 4,139 feet to the top of the mountain at 10,450 feet in 12 minutes. They also have an eight person gondola, and, new for the 2016-2017 season, another 8 person gondola serving the base area, 8 quad lifts, 1 triple and 2 doubles. The club will be staying in Teton Village, which is the name of the area near the lifts. The cowboy/rancher town of Jackson, Wyoming is a 12 mile bus ride away for a fare of $3 one way.

For those of you who like hotel-like accommodations, we have reservations at the Snake River Lodge (SRL). The SRL is very near the aerial tram and 150 yards from the gondola. Your price at the SRL includes daily breakfast and a package of other benefits. We have unbundled the lift tickets, since they are the same price as the ones offered by Ski.com. So, the SRL package price is $844 for a double queen room. The king deluxe is higher, but if we get 12 rooms assigned, it will be a free upgrade.

We are also offering 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos on West Michael Drive in Teton Village. The 4 bedroom Wind River condos are 100 yards from the Moose Creek quad chairlift. The 2 and 3 bedroom condos are 200 yards from the lift. You can also take a free shuttle to the tram station and the base area of Teton Village.  All condos have 1 bath per bedroom. We will try to get the most single beds we can in the condos. The condos are $550 per person for 3 and 4 bedroom and $625 for a 2 bedroom.

The registration and your $200 deposit are due by June 30. We have blocked rooms based on what we think demand will be. To guarantee you get the room you want, please register as soon as possible. That will also help us gauge demand. If you have roommates, please send us a list. Airfare right now is $995. We expect this to come down some, and there may be schedule and airline changes. We will keep you informed about it. Your deposits are fully refundable, and options can be added or deleted, up to September 30th.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Jonathan, jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .

THE TRIP COMMITTEE

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

VOLUNTEERING AT LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS

On Saturday morning, September 17, eleven Ski Club Members showed up at Lanakila Pacific, kind of across the street from Kuakini Medical Center, to, along with a host of other volunteers,  pack and deliver pre-prepared, plated meals to homebound seniors who are in the program.  Wanda and Geoff volunteered to deliver meals while the rest of us stayed at the base to pack them.  While Carl Nakamura, Bill Hodges and Mike Basso, preparing for the ski season no doubt, donned their winter attire to work in the freezer pulling and stacking five different meal selections per stack onto rolling tables, the remaining six of us, in the warmer packing room,  put the stacks of five into plastic bags, tying the top of each.  The bagged stacks were then transferred to cooler bags for delivery.  We, excluding Geoff and Wanda,  finished in about one hour, fifteen minutes, and went to Mexico (the restaurant, not the country) for an early lunch.  One and a half hours later, as we were getting ready to leave, Geoff and Wanda appeared:  They had gotten lost trying to find delivery addresses in the Pearl City area and then found themselves in a freeway traffic jam on the way back.  The Club has done this before, but it was a first for me, and I'll do it again the next time, but I think I'll play it safe again and stay away from the "excitement" of delivery.

SEPTEMBER PAU HANA
SHIROKIYA JAPAN VILLAGE WALK - ALA MOANA SHOPPING CENTER
September 23

Only seven Ski Club members turned out for the September Pau Hana at Shirokiya's.  Maybe those that didn't "knew something?"  Picture a large, rectangular room (cave?) with countless rows of food purveyors interspersed with rows of tables, seating six per table on short stools.  The idea is to circulate amongst the food purveyors, find something you like, and purchase it, sometimes waiting from three to five minutes for it to be cooked.  On the way back to a table, you can stop at one of the bars to buy a $1.00 beer (if you're satisfied with "Bud:"  Other beers cost more).  It's always fun to talk story with fellow Ski Club Members, but the noise from all the other customers was reminiscent, for this refugee from the sixties, of intermission at a rock concert:  I had to keep asking people to repeat themselves.   Also, unless you are willing to use the slow Shirokiya Wi-Fi, there is no reception which becomes a problem if you are expecting a call or want to look up or show your friend something from the Internet.   We'll go back to a bar and grill, again, next month, but, if somebody suggests this venue about a year from now (fading memory time), I'd probably try it again.
