More details to follow.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
The frequent and often heavy rain has dissipated a bit this past week, and it's almost safe to go outside again (heh!) Let's hope it stays that way, especially for our annual Kickoff Meeting only a week away and, for the first time in my memory, in an outdoor location. Not mentioned in the article below is the fact that Jonathan will be back in Honolulu from his anuual sojurn to Oregon, and he will be present at the Kickoff to answer any questions you might have about Hawaii Ski Week four short months from now. Don't forget to RSVP for the Kickoff and don't forget to bring a non glass container for your beverage of choice.
Speaking of Ski Week, it's time for my annual plea to you guys to get in shape for the trip. You shouldn't just get off the couch and go skiing as this can lead to soreness and contribute to accidents (although accidents can happen anyway: Just ask me!). If you have a gym membership but haven't been taking much advantage of it, start to go more regularly and, especially, do exercises to strengthen your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and adductors (inside of upper legs); stretch your quads, glutes, achilles, hamstrings, and adductor muscles, and do exercises to attain as much flexibility as you can in your ankles. You can find a lot of useful information on stretching/these muscles groups via the internet. Hiking trails at a fast pace, in Hawaii, with all the rock outcroppings and roots which force you to make quick direction changes, is a good overall exercise for skiing and so is biking which strengthens your glutes and hamstrings. I had been hoping to lead two or three weekend hikes this fall, but, right now, my weekend schedule is conflicted. If anyone out there wants to "step up" (good choice of words?) and lead a hike for the Club, please let me know.
See you at the Kickoff!
A hui hou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
ANNUAL KICKOFF MEETING
RAINBOW BAY MARINA
(next to Schooner's)
PEARL HARBOR
October 1 (Thursday) 5:00 PM
Come to our annual Kickoff Meeting at the Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor.
This is the
outdoor picnic area with cabanas on the right hand side (facing towards the
ocean) of Schooner's where we have been holding our General
Membership Meetings for the past several months. For those of you who have
not been to a General Membership Meeting and are not familiar with the area, take
the exit off the H1 in Aiea or the airport viaduct, traveling west, to
Kamehameha Highway. The signs should indicate that you are going towards Aloha Stadium. If you are coming from
the airport viaduct, look for Radford Drive on your right, and the second left
hand turn after Radford Drive will be preceded by a sign reading "Pearl Harbor
Historic Sights:" That's where your turn across Kamehameha Highway and into Pearl Harbor
on the left.
For those of you coming from the Aiea/H1 side, pass the stadium to your left and
take the first right after the exit to the Ford Island bridge. Once you
turn into Pearl Harbor, towards the water, as if you were going to visit the
Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road, and drive under the Ford Island
overpass (approximately 1/4 mile from where you turned onto the inner road).
Park in the lot at or just after Schooner's. As this
is the Kickoff for the new membership year (October 1 - September 30), we
pay for your food and reward many of you with door prizes. All you need to
bring is yourselves; hopefully, a friend or two who might want to join; your beverages of choice; and your checks for the new
membership year. Actually, it is better if you mail in your checks so as
not to unduly tax our Treasurer, Geoff, who is normally grill chef (Geoff the
Chef?) for the
evening and might accidentally burn your check or coat it with barbecue
sauce in the course of juggling his multitude of responsibilities (just joking
but----).
You may also want to bring some extra cash as Fergie promises to order some new
Club tee shirts for sale at the occasion and will have a few tank tops which we haven't seen
for a while (I've already spoken up for two).
If you are coming, Please RSVP to me,
pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ,
with the number in your party no later than this
coming Tuesday evening so we know how much food to supply, and we can reserve a
second cabana if there are too many participants for the single one we have
reserved. Also, no beach
chairs or glass containers are allowed: If your beverage of choice comes
in a glass bottle, be sure to bring some cups for consumption.

PAU HANA AT MONTEREY BAY CANNERS
PEARLRIDGE
CENTER (WEST)
October 30
(Friday) 4 P.M.
Join us for our next Pau Hana on Friday, October 30 at Monterey Bay Canners. Our last time at this venue was a whole fourteen months ago. There is always something good going on at Monterey Bay Canners. From delicious dining to fun and cocktails in the lounge, you’ll always find MBC a great place to be. Monterey Bay Canners is located in the Pearlridge West section of Pearlridge Center. To get there from Kamehameha Highway, turn off the highway onto Kaonohi St. (where you see Anna Millers,), take the first entrance into the shopping center right behind Anna Millers, take a left, and follow your nose up to Monterey Bay Canners which overlooks the farm that you can see from Kamehameha Highway just before Anna Millers. Be forewarned that the different sections of Pearlridge Center are not necessarily interconnected, and another entrance may not get you to the MBC.

Schooners, it's right near the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to
visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial
Place) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will
see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with plenty of free parking. See
you there.

ROY
HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2016
January 29 - February
6
We will be going to Park City, Utah for the 2016 Hawaii Ski
Week. As many of you know, Vail Resorts has purchased the Park City Mountain
Resort. This summer they plan to install an 8 passenger gondola to connect Park
City with Canyons Resort, already managed by Vail Resorts. This will create, in
their words, the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of
terrain. They also plan a new restaurant at the Park City gondola terminus
(bottom of Silverload lift), and upgrades to the King Kong and Motherlode lifts.
Ski.com will be providing discounted lift tickets, obviously good on both
mountains. The adult 5 day ticket will be $330 and the senior 5 day lift ticket
will be $250. Ski.com will also provide one day lift tickets for Deer Valley for
those of you who want to spend the day there. These tickets will cost $90, which
is a good discount from this year’s $115 window price. As we mentioned earlier,
you may want to purchase an epic pass from Vail Resorts for the season. These
will also be available from Ski.com, but we don’t know the details on this now.
Because you ski club members have stated categorically that ski-in/ski-out
access is a priority, we have chosen to stay primarily at The Lodge at the
Mountain Village. In addition to ski-in/ski-out access, the Lodge is 20 yards
from the Payday Lift, a 6 person high speed lift. There is a mini mall next door
with 4 ski shops and some restaurants. The Lodge offers hotel rooms, studio
suites, and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos. We have reserved one 4 bedroom condo,
four 3 bedroom condos and 4 hotel rooms. The hotel rooms have refrigerators and
coffee makers. We say we are staying “primarily” at the Lodge because they do
not offer hotel rooms with two beds. For our singles we have reserved some hotel
rooms across the street at the Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel. These rooms will have
two queen beds. The Park City free shuttle bus stops at the Lodge, and the Lodge
also offers free point to point on demand shuttle service. Main Street, Park
City, with all its shops and restaurants is about 1/2 mile away. The Lodge
features an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, numerous hot tubs, free wireless
internet, a fitness center and their own ice rink (for a fee). The Lodge has
plenty of meeting space for our traditional reception, pot luck and farewell
pizza party.
Our non-stop flights to Salt Lake City are as follows:
• Delta-1104 V Depart: HNL 1/29/2016 09:55 pm Arrive: SLC 1/30/2016 07:11 am
• Delta-1105 V Depart: SLC 2/6/2016 11:55 am Arrive: HNL 2/6/2016 03:35 pm
Since we are arriving so early, and it is only an hour and a half to Park
City, one could ski on Saturday, our arrival day. That would give you seven days
of skiing.
Of course, transfers to and from the airport are included.
Park City is more expensive than Steamboat. We will be paying about $300 to $400
more for a full package. The full package price (air, transfer, 7 nights
lodging, 5 day lift ticket) will range from $1,800 to $2,000.
This year
we would like to try something different for registration. You will be able to
register and pay for the trip online directly with Ski.com, and pay them
directly by check or credit card. This will relieve the trip committee of some
work, although we will still be responsible for roommate assignments. Pray for snow.
THE TRIP COMMITTEE
PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT THE MONKEYPOD KITCHEN
KO OLINA RESORT
Believe it or not, it only took me a half hour to get from my house on Kamehameha Heights to Ko Olina on Friday, August 28, leaving at about 2:15 P.M. It was another forty-five minutes before Geoff showed up from Campbell Industrial Park right next door (he works for a living), and another half hour before the rest of the crew began arriving. We scored a table under the canopy on the patio, and, peaking at eight members, enjoyed libations and very good pupus at Pau Hana prices. Getting to Ko Olina from town burns a little gas but, really, is more of a pleasant drive (for me, anyway), than stopping and starting for traffic lights, and the ambiance and food make this venue worth the effort.

VOLUNTEER PAINTING PROJECT
LINAPUNI ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL
On Saturday Morning, August 29, ten Ski Clubbers turned out at Linipuni School in Kalihi, for, if my memory serves me correctly, our third school painting project. Unlike our past painting projects, rather than walls, this job was to repaint the edges of the cement walkways (think curbs) and the edges of stairs a bright yellow to help guard against student inattention with resulting trips and falls. We finished in two hours, a record I believe, and repaired to Jerry's Pizza, on North King St. opposite the Kapalama Post Office, for lunch. I don't know where Geoff keeps coming up with these recommendations for places to go, but he scored again. This is the new, second location for a Pizzeria on the North Shore which came to town following demand from "townies" who were tired of traveling to Waialua for their favorite pizza. It's kind of right in my neighborhood, but I had never heard of it. Once they get a liquor license, we might be going there for a Pau Hana.
