PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

The Kickoff Meeting at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor, came off without a hitch last month even though we had to move it from the larger area at the Bowfin Submarine Museum just a few weeks before the event, had concerns about whether the group would fit into the area provided at Rainbow Bay, and had been "blessed" with rain, off and on, for several days right up until the hour we began.   Thank you Mother Nature, thank you Paul (Ferguson) for securing the venue and bringing the grill, thank you Geoff (Chu) for bringing the food,  paper goods, and, as always, barbecue your skills, and thank you to everyone who came.  You all seemed to be having a good time (and so did  I when I wasn't getting flustered with distributing the raffle tickets).

Welcome aboard to all new members who joined at the meeting or didn't come but sent in their memberships via U.S. Mail.   Please excuse us if you didn't get an immediate confirmation or waited a few weeks to see the cancelled check show up in your bank statement.  Many years ago, when one of our officers worked right around the corner and another lived "right up the hill" from the Aiea Post Office, we checked the box more frequently.  While it's a little less convenient now, it makes more sense for the Club to have a permanent address than to keep changing it with each change in officers.  Also, we don't go to the bank until we have a "critical mass" of transactions so please bear with us.  Also, you can always contact Geoff to check on membership or payment status or any other Board Member by clicking on "Contacts" above (if you are reading this online) or by going to the contact page on our website.  You can also call me at (808) 224-1065.

If you are reading this on our website but haven't been getting the Newsletter or periodic announcements via email or if you know of someone else in this situation, please let me know.  There are oversights from time to time and email glitches which we can't correct unless we know about them.

Finally, it's broken record time:  If you are an old member who intends to renew but has been procrastinating (life can get in the way), please do so ASAP.   Following the December issue of the Newsletter, which will go out during the last week of November, we will be eliminating, from the email list, all members for the 2014-2015 year who have not renewed by that time.

A hui hou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT TR0PIX BAR AND GRILL
PEARLRIDGE CENTER
October 30 (Friday) 2:00 P.M.

BLUE TROPIX BAR AND GRILL IS THE REVISED VENUE FOR THE OCTOBER SKI CLUB PAU HANA! It's conveniently located in Pearl Ridge where Denny's used to be, across the street from Chili's and American Savings Bank.  If you are turning in from Kamehameha Highway, it is on the right hand side just before the pedestrian overpass.  If you are coming from Honolulu side, however, you might encounter less traffic by coming into Aiea on Moanalua Rd. and taking a left down Pali Momi. There's lots of parking, including the roof-top and Sears. LIVE MUSIC, a pool table, a dart room, about 20 TVs and $3.00 draft beer all day! Happy hour specials as well. It opens at 2pm and a few of us will be there to hold some seating near the pool table. So come on down and get an early start for the Halloween weekend. Oh yes, the food here is ono, too! The address is 98-151 Pali Momi, Aiea, HI 96701. Check out Blue Tropix on Yahoo.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
SCHOONER'S RESTAURANT
57 ARIZONA MEMORIAL PLACE
PEARL HARBOR
November 5 (Thursday) 5:30 PM

Come to Schooners for our November General Membership Meeting where, in a most pleasant addition to our normal diet of food, drinks, schmoozing, and announcements, Board Member Alan Teramura with, perhaps, some assistance from another member,  will be providing some pointers on the care and tuning of skis.  Though there are no Sunset Specials for dinner, there are specials on pupus until 6 PM, and some of us can make a meal of pupus. We usually start arriving at 5:00 PM to get a head start on the food.   For those of you who haven't yet been to Schooners, it's right near the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial Place) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with plenty of free parking. See you there.

TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
SERVING AN EARLY THANKSGIVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY
November 26 (Thursday)

The ski club will again participate in serving lunch at the Blaisdell Center on Thanksgiving Day, November 26. Please let me know, roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ,  if you will join in this event, and give me your shirt size and preference for job assignment. The assignments choices are:  Waitperson: Serve meals to diners,  Food Runner: Bring food from kitchen to serving line (heavy containers), and Pie Runner: Bring pies to serving line.  Volunteers will have own potluck "brunch" in an area adjacent to the parking structure, and all Ski Club Members, not just those volunteering, are invited to join the potluck.  The shift begins at 11: 30 A.M.,  but volunteers need to be there by 11:15 A.M. for a briefing.  The time for potluck will be announced by email.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS  PARTY
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalilo Home Road
December 19 (Saturday) time 6:00 P.M.

Early scheduling pays off:  Sylvia "Sam" Wright has managed to reserve the recreation room/terrace at the Esplanade for our traditional Ski Club Christmas Party on the same date as the annual Boat Parade. If you haven't seen a boat parade before, you're in for a treat:  The boat owners, who are competing for prizes, bend over backwards to decorate their boats with Christmas lights, disguise them as space ships, pirate ships, etc., and costume the crews accordingly.  We will be able to take a break from eating, drinking, and gift giving to watch the decorated  boats sail by the terrace.  This is potluck, BYOB, and, of course, the traditional grab bag gift exchange.   Bring a grab-bag gift with approximate value of $15.00 if you wish to participate in the exchange.  You are given a raffle ticket, and when your number is called, you have the option of choosing a gift from the "pile" or one that has already been chosen, thereby forcing the original chooser to choose from the pile again:  In previous years, the circumstances with some gifts have been beyond hilarious.  To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalilio Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. Drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile and look for the looming white building complex on the left.  While there is limited to no parking, except for unloading, at the building, there is normally plenty of street parking available. The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2016
January 29 - February 6

We will be going to Park City, Utah for the 2016 Hawaii Ski Week. As many of you know, Vail Resorts has purchased the Park City Mountain Resort. This summer they plan to install an 8 passenger gondola to connect Park City with Canyons Resort, already managed by Vail Resorts. This will create, in their words, the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of terrain. They also plan a new restaurant at the Park City gondola terminus (bottom of Silverload lift), and upgrades to the King Kong and Motherlode lifts. Ski.com will be providing discounted lift tickets, obviously good on both mountains. The adult 5 day ticket will be $330 and the senior 5 day lift ticket will be $250. Ski.com will also provide one day lift tickets for Deer Valley for those of you who want to spend the day there. These tickets will cost $90, which is a good discount from this year’s $115 window price. As we mentioned earlier, you may want to purchase an epic pass from Vail Resorts for the season. These will also be available from Ski.com, but we don’t know the details on this now.

Because you ski club members have stated categorically that ski-in/ski-out access is a priority, we have chosen to stay primarily at The Lodge at the Mountain Village. In addition to ski-in/ski-out access, the Lodge is 20 yards from the Payday Lift, a 6 person high speed lift. There is a mini mall next door with 4 ski shops and some restaurants. The Lodge offers hotel rooms, studio suites, and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos. We have reserved one 4 bedroom condo, four 3 bedroom condos and 4 hotel rooms. The hotel rooms have refrigerators and coffee makers. We say we are staying “primarily” at the Lodge because they do not offer hotel rooms with two beds. For our singles we have reserved some hotel rooms across the street at the Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel. These rooms will have two queen beds. The Park City free shuttle bus stops at the Lodge, and the Lodge also offers free point to point on demand shuttle service. Main Street, Park City, with all its shops and restaurants is about 1/2 mile away. The Lodge features an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, numerous hot tubs, free wireless internet, a fitness center and their own ice rink (for a fee). The Lodge has plenty of meeting space for our traditional reception, pot luck and farewell pizza party.

Our non-stop flights to Salt Lake City are as follows:

• Delta-1104 V Depart: HNL 1/29/2016 09:55 pm Arrive: SLC 1/30/2016 07:11 am
• Delta-1105 V Depart: SLC 2/6/2016 11:55 am Arrive: HNL 2/6/2016 03:35 pm

Since we are arriving so early, and it is only an hour and a half to Park City, one could ski on Saturday, our arrival day. That would give you seven days of skiing.

Of course, transfers to and from the airport are included. Park City is more expensive than Steamboat. We will be paying about $300 to $400 more for a full package. The full package price (air, transfer, 7 nights lodging, 5 day lift ticket) will range from $1,800 to $2,000.

This year we would like to try something different for registration. You will be able to register and pay for the trip online directly with Ski.com, and pay them directly by check or credit card. This will relieve the trip committee of some work, although we will still be responsible for roommate assignments.  Pray for snow.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

VOLUNTEER PAINTING PROJECT
FERN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On Saturday Morning, October 24, thirteen Ski Clubbers turned out at Fern Elementary School in Kalihi to reprise the painting project at Linapuni School only a few short weeks before.  This was not on the schedule in last month's newsletter because our help was solicited after the publication date.  Even with the short notice, via an email announcement, we picked up three more volunteers than last month and, with extra help from other groups who had been asked, finished in a little over an hour.  This mean an earlier lunch (brunch?) than last month, again at Jerry's Pizza across from the Kapalama Post Office:  A number of us really like that place!  Too bad all our volunteer projects aren't in Kalihi near Jerry's.
