PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
How many of you watched our Warriors "kick butt" this past Saturday at Utah State? Did you see that snow in the mountains behind the stadium? Former Hawaii and now North Salt Lake resident (and still Ski Club member), Jim Takara, called me a couple of weeks ago to mention, among other things, a dusting of snow in the Cottonwood Canyons, and our Vice President, Kevin Okawa, sent me a picture, off the Internet, of our January destination, Telluride, also with a dusting. Winter IS coming!!!
I was pleased to see a record number of you turn out for the annual Kick-Off Meeting a couple of weeks ago and hope to see an equally fine showing for the upcoming Chili Cook-Off on November 14th. This is a potluck, and you can bring whatever you want, but we need to get a "heads up" on "who is bringing what" so we know there will be enough rice to absorb the chili, some salads to balance out the chili and rice, and enough desert to cool down the palates following the chili. We also need to know, of course, how many are bringing Chili so we can prepare the "infrastructure" and logistics. An email will be forthcoming, within a few days, asking you to RSVP on your contribution to the event.
Finally, I appreciate hearing from you all, via email and/or telephone, about matters concerning the Club, but I have been getting a lot of questions lately concerning the trips, Club tee shirts, and other issues to which we have specific individuals assigned. It's not that I don't want to answer your questions: It's just that, lots of times, I don't know the answers. Please address your questions, when possible, to the individual(s) assigned. Check out the "Contact Us" page of our website, www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com to find the responsible party. Also, below, in the article on our upcoming trips, we have noted the primary Trip Committee member responsible for each trip. Mahalo!
See you at our activities and see you soon on the slopes.
Aloha,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
RETURN OF THE LEGENDARY CHILI COOK-OFF
Wai'alae Nui
Recreation Center, 2203 Halekoa Drive
November 14 (Sunday) 4 PM - 9 PM
When I first joined the club in the early 80s, the Chili Cookoff was an annual event, a potluck where the more daring, "culinarily inclined" members would bring their homemade chili for entry into the contest with everyone in attendance serving as judges. It so much fun, toasted palates notwithstanding, that we are bringing it back. This will substitute for the Pre-Thanksgiving party of immediate years past, but anyone is welcome to bring turkey chili. Thanks to Susan Murata, we will be using her community association's Waia'lae Nui Recreation Center at 2203 Halekoa Drive on the heights above Kahala. To get to the Recreation Center, turn off Kalanianaole Highway in the mountain direction onto Ainakoa Ave. which is just Ewa of where the H1 Freeway ends, go up just over .3 of a mile and take a left onto Halekoa. The Recreation Center is approximately 1.5 miles up the hill. Within the next few days, we will requesting you to officially sign up to enter your chili in the contest or indicate what other pot luck item you will be bringing. Don't be shy about bringing a pot (or 2 or 3) of rice as I think we'll need it. All attendees will get to vote for their favorite, and the Board has authorized some "good" prizes for first through third places as well as a fourth "sur---prize."

THANKSGIVING DAY AT THE BLAISDELL
We've had a good response from club members eager to give thanks this year by helping Salvation Army serve a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner to the less fortunate. Our 17 slots are full, but we may need some subs, so let me know, wanda10s@aol.com , if you want to join us for fun and good feelings and I'll put you on the wait list. For those working, please wear closed comfortable shoes, your ski club shirt (if you have one), and no purse or bag. Pockets or waist packs will have to do. It has become a tradition with us to wear seasonal headgear..... antlers, Santa hats, elf hats, pumpkin hats, etc. Aprons are not a bad idea. The pre-event potluck brunch will be from 9:30 - 11:00 on the sidewalk area near the parking structure. We welcome you to join us, even if you can't volunteer. It's a good time eat, drink, and visit with friends whom you may not have seen lately. Parking is free at the Blaisdell for the day.

ANNUAL SKI CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 11,
(Saturday) 5:00 P.M.
Once again, Darrell and Rheta Large have graciously offered
their residence at 585 Kumukahi Place on Spinnaker Isle, Koko Marina to host our
Annual Christmas Party. For over six years running, their kindness,
hospitality, and location have provided us with one of the best venues for a
perfect party. Held in conjunction with the “13th Annual “Festival of
Lights” Koko Marina Boat Parade”, this party is always well attended and one of
our most popular events. Members need to BYOB and bring a dish to share
(Pot luck). The ever popular grab bag will take place, and we ask that a minimum
$15.00 gift value be followed.
To get to the Larges', turn off
Kalanianaole Highway onto Hawaii Kai Drive, proceed approximately .8 mile until
you see Pepeekeo St. on the left: Kumukahi St. ,or the entrance to the street,
will be your next right. After you turn right, you will immediately come to a T:
Take a left at the T and look for the 585 on the left.
Try to get there before 5:30 P.M. as Darrell warns that
parking will most likely be at a premium after that time.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
OCTOBER PAU HANA AND MOVIE
For a Friday evening, the Shack-Waikiki was like a "Ghost Town," on the night of October 22. The fact that only eight Club members showed up for the Pau Hana and movie and the "creeping" realization that we were the only skiers/snowboarders there, made it downright "eerie." (See, I'm in Halloween spirit). What happened? Still, the parking at Geof's (Thank you so very much) on the edge of Waikiki was easy and convenient, the Shack was easy to walk to, the Happy Hour prices for drinks and Pupus were reasonable, and the free movie, of skiers going off cliffs and jumps and down roofs, stair railings, and what have you (also "scary" at times), though not the type of skiing I can or aspire to do, made my mouth water for the season to come. In all, it was a good, if not different, way to end the week.
