PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
The memory of last Thursday evening's Annual Board Dinner Meeting is still fresh in my taste buds. A perk of serving on the Board is the annual dinner meeting for continuing, incoming, and outgoing Board Members following the April election, and this year we had it at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Waikiki. While this might sound a little extravagant, the price for the early bird dinner was less than $10.00 per person above the average cost for previous years (which had most recently been at the Pagoda's Floating Restaurant). I had forgotten the taste of steak that can be cut with a butter knife and melts in your mouth and probably will not have the opportunity to refresh my memory until this time next year. I think "We'll be back." -----And oh yes: It was a meeting, and we did conduct Club business.
I, again, wish to thank the Kleinschmidts for their four years of service on the Board and welcome Bill Hodges and the Fergusons, Rene (Fergie) and Paul. See, we lost one husband and wife team only to gain another. For those of you who are relatively new to the Club, Fergie is a past president who has already "hit the ground running:" She is taking over the tee shirt sales function from Kevin Okawa who admirably performed this duty while serving as Vice President of the Club as well as in his subsequent life as a civilian. Thank you, Kevin, for your years of service.
During the coming year, watch your emails for announcements of upcoming activities which may not have been planned far enough in advance to make it onto the posted schedule and, in some cases, might even be "spur of the moment." Some members have been discussing, among themselves, their willingness to sponsor hikes and other activities which they will plan or, maybe just invite the Club along on activities in which they are engaging with other groups. -----So if you see an unexpected email from the Club, don't put off opening it: It could be "time sensitive."
I hope you can make it to the May 1 General Membership Meeting where Jonathan will have information to share on Hawaii Ski Week 2015 at Steamboat.
See you at the meetings and activities!

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT CATTLE COMPANY
98-1262 Kaahamanu St.
Pearl City, Hawaii
April 25 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
Another one of my watering holes on the way home from work. It never disappoints. Aside from Moose's on Lewers Street, I can't think of a more economical Happy Hour. $3.00 pints and wells - 50% off on selected pupus and the bartender always allows a couple drinks at Happy Hour prices upon last call. Conveniently located just off the H-1 Waimalu exit, there is plenty parking. Upon leaving there is always a line outside the door so the food must be good or cheap or both, should you choose to dine after the Pau Hana. Hope to see you there.

KA'ENA POINT HIKE
April 27 (Sunday), 7 A.M.
Another Sunday hiking opportunity!
We will be meeting at the Blaisdell Park in Pearl City at 7am to carpool out to
Ka'ena point . The entrance to Blaisdell park is on the ocean side of Kamehameha
Highway across from Kaahumanu St. You can also meet us at the start of the hike
at the end of Farrington Highway at around 7:30am. The hike is about 5.5 miles
round trip, ending at the bird sanctuary (no dogs allowed) where you may also
see monk seals sunning themselves on the sand. This is an easy walk, but it can
be hot since there are no trees or shade, so bring a hat and sunscreen, water,
and a snack.
Ka'ena Point State Park
Location: End of Farrington
Highway (Highway 930), Makua.
Trail Name:
Ka‘ena Point Trail
Description: Relatively remote wild coastline with picnicking opportunities and
shore fishing. Large sandy beach at Keawa'ula Bay with board surfing and
bodysurfing for experts and swimming only during completely calm conditions in
the summer; lifeguard services. Long family hike (2.7 miles one-way) along
volcanic coast with tide pools, small natural stone arches and fine views of
Makua coastline. Early morning dolphin sightings from point near Kaluakauila
stream mouth. Viewing of the large sea cave, Kaneana, legendary home of Nanue
the shark man. Hot, dry area with little shade. No drinking water.
Services: Restrooms, trash cans, no drinking water, payphone, lifeguard
services.

Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943 Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
May 1, (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.
Come to our General Membership Meeting at the usual location on May 1 when Jonathan will have some "hot off the press" information to share about Hawaii Ski Week, 2015. Although the meeting doesn't "officially" begin until 6:00 P.M., many members start coming at 5:00 for drinks, dinner, and "talking story." You need to be there by 5:30 P.M. to take advantage of the reduced prices of dinners for two.

PAU HANA AT SCHOONERS
May 30 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
We hope to get a reserved section for this Pau Hana, as we have in the past at Schooners, but the restaurant could not commit this early. Relax with a cold one while watching the water lap gently against the boats in the harbor and the sun set slowly over the horizon (Corny, huh?). Schooners is located at 57 Arizona Memorial Road just past the Ford Island Road overpass. Turn off of Kamehameha Highway, from either direction, as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right onto Arizona Memorial Road, drive down the road a short ways, go under the Ford Island overpass, and you will see Schooners on the left. Should be plenty of free parking right beside the restaurant which is always a plus for a Pau Hana venue.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
HOOMALUHIA
BOTANICAL GARDEN WALK
March 30
(Sunday) 7:00 A.M.
A group of early risers met at 7 A.M. for a Sunday
hike through Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens braving predictions of bad weather
after a night of rain in the Koolau mountains. The hikers were greeted with a
beautiful, cool, rain washed morning and awesome views of valleys above. We were
surprised to be greeted by Toby who has recovered sufficiently from his New
Zealand adventure to start hiking again (Editors Note: Toby
thought he had recovered
sufficiently for a walk along a road,
but by the end of the 5.5 mile hilly walk, he found it was a little
premature). It was interesting to walk along and see plants and trees
brought in from the Philippines, Hawaii, Africa, Sri Lanka & India, Polynesia,
Melanesia, Malaysia, and Tropical America. The hike meandered up and down hills
and skirted the many campgrounds, ending with a view of the lake that was
designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood
protection for Kaneohe. After stopping to examine the plants in the useful
plants section, including the panama hat tree, allspice, and the cacao tree, we
sat down for a breakfast snack and coffee. Everyone left, saying goodbye and
discussing where we would meet for the next ski club hike.

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S GRILL
On Friday evening, March 28, ten of the Ski Club's "Pau Hana Regulars," which I like to think of as the "Usual Suspects," joined by Michael Cloe (thank you, man--for coming) gathered at Ryan's for good conversation, good drinks at happy hour prices (the first round, anyway), and a variety of pupus which were passed around. Sometimes, when more than one Board member is present, some Club business is informally but effectively handled at these gatherings, and March 28 was no exception. I'm looking forward to the next Pau Hana, this coming Friday, April 25, at the Cattle Company. I don't know if I've ever been there, but I've heard good things. Hopefully, some of the Wahiawa, Pear City-Aiea crowd, who don't join us in Honolulu, will come to the Cattle Company on Friday.
