PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Please join me in welcoming Sandy Herron to our Board and in welcoming back Jon and Momi Kleinscmidt and Kevin Okawa who agreed to serve for new biennial terms.   Mahalo to Sandy for inviting us back to Mokuleia in two months (see schedule and article) to experience the "decadence" of sitting in the VIP Section for the "Sport of Kings" and for her willingness to serve on the Trip Committee to assist in arranging a second trip next year to Sun Valley where she once owned a home.  I'm sure her insights on the Sun Valley area will prove invaluable.

Per our By-Laws, Club officers are elected on an annual basis by the Board itself, and in our first post election Board Meeting on April 19th, Kevin was nominated and re-elected as Vice President and Geof as Treasurer.   As your President, again, for another one year term, I, especially, appreciate the continuity of having the same team on board.

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jonathan Carr, Todd Withy,  Carl Nakamura, and Ryan Saiki for having stepped forward to join the Trip Committee to help make next year's Japan trip a reality. I apologize if there is another new member or two whom I have failed to recognize.  Our ski trips, of course, are the primary reason for the existence of the Club, and even though we retain a travel agency to make the air and hotel reservations, the work on the "Club end," including monitoring the ongoing work of the travel agency, especially for an international trip, requires an enormous committment of time and energy.   They are the "hardest working people in Ski Club business."

Don't forget the Pau Hana this Friday at the Koko Marina Pub (Kona Brewery) in Hawaii Kai and the next General Membership Meeting on May 3 at a different location, Schooners.   During  our most recent Pau Hana at Schooners (May of last year-----isn't that a coincidence?), we were invited to "test out" their downstairs area for a meeting so I am especially looking forward to May 3rd.

See you at the meetings and activities.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT THE KONA BREWING COMPANY'S
KOKO MARINA PUB
Koko Marina Center
7192 Kalanianaole Highway
April 27 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.

Our second Pau Hana of 2012 will be at the Kona Brewery's Kona Marina Pub in Hawaii Kai:  Great microbrews, good pupus or a meal if you wish, great view of the marina, comfortable surroundings, and free parking. Well worth the trip to East Honolulu.  Come early if you can.   Judging from our Pau Hana history at popular locations, I've reserved a table for 15 beginning at 4:30 P.M.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Schooner's
57 Arizona Memorial Road
May 3 (Thursday) 5:30 P.M.

Our trusty "home" for General Membership Meetings, Sam Sneads, is closed for renovations on May 3.  Therefore, the May 3 General Membership Meeting has been moved to Schooners at Pearl Harbor where we have had a couple of Pau Hanas in the past. Schooners has a downstairs area, generally reserved for groups, where we can order off the menu as we do at "Sam's," have a little more privacy, and enjoy a view of the boat harbor rather than of the golf course.  Although the actual meeting, featuring an update on the Japan trip for our 2013 Ski Week, will not begin until 6 P.M.,  please plan on arriving by 5:30, if you can, to order your meal.  To get to Schooners, turn off Kamehameha Highway as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on Arizona Memorial Road (the inner road), go under the Ford Island overpass, and Schooners is on the left (oceanside) of the road. You can't miss it, and there is plenty of free parking.

KIPAPA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAINTING PROJECT
May 5 (Saturday) 8 A.M.

For those of you who remember or just heard about the good time we had painting at the Palolo Chinese Home back in October, we are going to do it again, but this time in central Oahu. Kipapa Elementary needs our help to do painting on May 5.  We will meet at 8 A.M. and work until noon. DOE will provide supplies for painting.  Lunch, which will be "on the Club,"  will follow at Just Tacos in the Mililani Town Center.  The school parking lot is at 95-076 Kipapa Drive. From H2 heading toward Wahiawa, take the Mililani off-ramp (the second one; go under the Meheula overpass); turn right at the stoplight onto Meheula Parkway, heading Southwest.  Turn right at the second stoplight, onto Kuahelani Ave. Turn right at the second intersection, onto Moenamanu.  Take the next right onto Kipapa Drive; the school parking lot will be on your right, within a block.  The Mililani Town Center is on Meheula Parkway, across from the Mililani High School.  As of this Newsletter, we have reached the limit of volunteers we need, but you can email me (Roy Manzoku) roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com,   if you wish to join us in case of cancellations.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITES:

EAT THE STREET

In the late afternoon/early evening of Friday, March 30, approximately eight Ski Club Members found their way to and found each other in the vacant lot just Ewa of Mother Waldren Playground in Kakaako where a variety of famous and not-so-famous lunch wagons had set up for the monthly "Eat the Street" street party.  Geof appreciated his ribs from Hawaii Five-0, I appreciated the chicken gumbo from Soul Patrol, and we both appreciated the relaxed attitude, at least that evening, towards BYOB.  There were a number of tables provided under a tent canopy for eating, socializing, and protecting us from the rain which never came.   Thanks, Geof, for coming with the idea for this different kind of Pau Hana.  I'd do it again.
