PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
We just had our Annual Board Dinner where we thank everyone for their hard work
during the year, say a fond Aloha to departing Board Members, and welcome new
Board Members for the year to come. Guess what? Our only "officially
departing" Board Member,
Susan Murata, came back for another two year term and, with the addition of
Jonathan Carr and Roy Manzoku, we are now up to our full complement of ten.
To Jon and Roy, "Welcome
Aboard! Jenna's employer, however, has re-assigned her to
the East Coast, and she will be leaving my old home town, Boston (Go Sox!)
in a couple of months. This means that we will be looking for another
member to take her place on the Board for the remainder of her two year term.
Any takers? Let me know.
Thanks to encouragement (hounding?) from V.P. Kevin Okawa, we are starting the new Ski Club year with the new logo (isn't it about time!) on the masthead of the Newsletter, blue title headings to match, a normal-looking typeface to replace the Comic Sans which had been the subject of some internal as well as external criticism (internet chatter), and accompanying changes to our Website. What do you think? If you don't like it, just give it a couple of months for "accustomization," and let me know. The typeface we are now using is supposed to be one of the easiest to read.
How time flies!! After Geof volunteered to reprise his Kayaking to the Mokuluas (those islands off Kailua Beach Park) from a few years ago, I looked back to see when it actually was (so I could, maybe, re-use the old announcement). Guess what? It was mentioned in the first Ski Club Newsletter I ever edited-----in May, 2007, four whole years ago!---and I had to go through the whole stack to get there. In going backwards through the newsletters, I came across our August, 2009 sailing adventure in Waikiki, on Neal and Arleen's boat: A piece of hardware attached to the anchor chain got bent out of shape while we anchored to "party," and were it not for a hacksaw in the boat's toolbox, we might still be "lost at sea." I also came across the Superferry trip to Maui, in September, 2008, when we overnighted in Geof's company's Section #8 Housing rental apartments (another adventure). Hopefully, we'll have a few more adventures like this---or not---in the months to come.
If you have any suggestions for future Club activities, we are "all ears"--- and "eyes." Give me a call or any of us an email: Just click on Contacts .
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT PABLO'S (OR PABLO MCGINTY'S) CANTINA
Friday, April 29,
4:30 P.M.
Pablo's Cantina or Pablo McGinty's Cantina (they now seem to be de-emphasizing their Irish last name) has taken over the old, vacant Comprades site on the second floor of Ward Center to the immediate left (looking in the ocean direction) of Ryan's. The menu is a little different, but margaritas are magaritas, beer is beer, and the ambience on the lanai is the same---especially after a few--- unless it rains. The early start time (4:30) is so I/we can score a table which, I am sure, will start expanding as more members drift in. Hasta Luego! Ole'

PAU HANA AT SCHOONERS
Friday the 13th (eiiiiih!!)
of May 5:00 P.M.
Unlike last month's Pau Hana at Pablo's, this month we will have a reserved section so join the Ski Club's "Pau Hana Hui" for a Pau Hana at Schooners, Pearl Harbor on Friday, May 13. Relax with a cold one while watching the water lap gently against the boats in the harbor and the sun set slowly over the horizon (Corny, huh?). Schooners is located at 57 Arizona Memorial Road just past the Ford Island Road overpass. Turn off of Kamemeha Highway as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right onto Arizona Memorial Road, drive down the road a short ways, go under the Ford Island overpass, and you will see Schooners on the left. Should be plenty of free parking.

ALASKAN CRUISE
July 17-25
In July, a number of Hawaii Ski Club members
will be going from from Vancouver to Seward, Alaska, sailing on
Holland America's 7-Day Glacier Discovery Cruise. Departing Vancouver on
July 16, they will be sailing up the the Inside Passage, visiting
Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, cruising through Glacier Bay and College Fjord,
arriving in Seward on July 24th, bussing to Anchorage on July 24th, and
returning to Vancouver the following day.
Although the cruise is already sold-out,
I'm sure Wandi Sagum, who has coordinated it, will be initiating a "last minute
appeal for replacements" in case of dropouts.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
MARINER'S RIDGE HIKE
Sunday, April 17
On Sunday, 16 April club members and one pup made the three mile round trip hike to the top of Kaluanui Ridge (also known as Mariner’s Ridge). The trail started off dry with guava bushes along the path. Further up, we entered a forest of wispy ironwood trees and welcomed the breezes. The summit afforded 360 degree views of the Ko’olau Mountain Range, Maunalua and Waimanalo Bay, Koko Crater, the Olomana Peaks, Hahaione Valley, and it was clear enough to see Molokai. But the summit wasn’t enough for this group: We scaled a rock face and reached another peak to see where we had been. A great time was had by all on this moderate to difficult hike. Apres hike was held at the Greek Marina, Hawaii Kai.

EARTH DAY AND SEA HUNT AT THE
WAIKIKI AQUARIUM
April 9, April
16
On the second and third Saturdays of April, I joined two or three other Ski Club Members to help the Waikiki Aquarium with two events geared largely, or entirely, for children in the open yard area of the property. On April 9, I assisted with Earth Day, to promote environmental awareness and, on April 16, with Sea Hunt to promote a better understanding of the ocean environment. At both events, the young participants visited informational booths, engaged in educational play activities, and watched stage presentations. Our job was to arrive in the early morning, assist with the setup of tables and chairs, refuse containers, and the sound system, help to transport supplies to the booths, affix sponsors' banners to the chain link fence enclosing the yard, perform other miscellaneous duties, work in the food booth, scrip sales, or help with one of the activities during the function, and assist with disassembly at the end. Under the able coordination of Wandi Sagum, the Ski Club has been providing volunteers for Aquarium events for several years, most prominently for the evening concert series, which should be starting again in a couple of months, during which volunteers, when they are not engaged in their assignments, get to hear such local luminaries as Willy K and Amy Hanaialii. The Aquarium, with its community events, is not only a worthy cause, but volunteering, this past year, has enabled me to meet new people, get some additional exercise, get a couple of free tee shirts (which I don't need) hear some phenomenal talent (at the concerts), and, generally, have some fun. Hope to see more of you volunteering for future Aquarium events with notifications in the Newsletter and/or by separate email.
