PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Hawaii Ski Week 2016 is now history, and from what I have heard (only heard because I wasn't there), despite some of the usual hiccups, everyone had a good time and the snow cooperated.  As long as the snow cooperates, how can you miss at Park City?  Mucho Mahalos to the Trip Committee;  Chair Jonathan Carr, Jeffrey Au, Michael Cloe, Takeshi Toma, Alan Teramura, and John and Cathy Ritter; for a job well done.  Also, a huge mahalo goes to the Club members who stepped up to offer their condos for the pot luck when the hotel was unable or unwilling to provide a reasonable venue, Alan Teramura for the tour, and to the Ritters for inviting us to their home for the pizza party. Please excuse me if I forgot anyone.   Plans are already underway for 2017, and the Trip Committee, as usual, will be needing some help.  If you have some suggestions about how to better run the trips, don't keep them to yourself:  Join the Committee.
trips@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .

Also, Board elections are less than two months away, and four of our nine Board Members' two year terms are expiring.  My one year term is expiring.  Vice President Jonathan Carr, who is also our Trip Committee Chair, will soon be looking for a few good men and women who are interested in running for the Board as well as  encouraging expiring members to run again.  If you are interested in running, please contact Jonathan: jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Irons Table and Tavern
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943 Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
March 3, (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.

Come to Irons Table and Tavern for our March General Membership Meeting.  This is the old Sam Sneads/Seven Palms location at the Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House which closed over a year ago for a change in management.  It recently re-opened as Irons and, believe it or not, Schooners, our replacement hangout, is closing this coming Saturday, also for a change in management.  So, we're baaaack! We've been promised our old digs on the lanai and the ability to order pupus off the Tavern menu which is less expensive than the restaurant menu.  If you are on Nimitz Highway under the freeway structure and going in the Pearl Harbor direction,  you take a left hand turn onto Valkenburgh and look for the entrance, on your left, to the Golf Course.  You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive off of Salt Lake Blvd.  See you at the Irons.

MARCH PAU HANA
AT
FATBOY'S BISTRO
ALA WAI GOLF COURSE CLUB HOUSE
March 25 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.

Having walked by this eatery many, many times I finally stopped for a drink or two or three after my round and was pleasantly surprised how reasonable and good the food was.  It's full service Hale-style dining with great views, lots of free parking and affordable prices. Offering breakfast, lunch, pupus, cocktails (full service bar) and dinner, Fatboy’s Fairway Bistro features a small menu of local favorites and daily gourmet specials. Fatboy’s Fairway Bistro also features live local music from 6:00 - 8:00 PM! Please be aware there is no happy hour and the prices are listed in their website if you need to know before you attend.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

HAWAII SKI WEEK
AT PARK CITY
January 29 - February 6

60 Hawaii ski club members met up in Park City for our 2016 Hawaii ski week, January 29th to February 6th. About half our group took the group flights on Delta Airlines, non-stop to Salt Lake City. The rest booked their own itineraries and some their own lodging. We had 45 members staying with the group at the Lodge at the Mountain Village, a slope-side condominium, just “steps” away from the Payday high speed quad lift. A lot of steps. But actually, the Lodge is truly ski-in/ski-out from the free locker storage, utilizing the First Time lift.

After our on-time arrival we were picked up by LeBus and whisked away to Park City for a grocery stop, arriving at the Lodge, with only two pieces of lost luggage (soon retrieved), at 10 am. Most of us were able to check in early to our rooms, even though the Sundance Film Festival was still running. Most of us spent the day checking things out, buying (more) groceries and arranging equipment rentals nearby. I was able to rent “performance” skis, boots and poles for six days for $179, thanks to rates negotiated by our travel agent, Ski.com. That helped, because the lodging cost was high on this trip, due to Sundance and the Lodge’s excellent location. On the day of our arrival the club hosted a reception at the Lodge where all 60 of us got together, along with some other Hawaii friends who live in Park City and a representative from Vail Resorts. Lift tickets were distributed and we were ready to go.

The weather definitely co-operated. Sunday was a grey day, but there was still fresh snow on the ground from previous snowfalls. On Monday there was 9” of fresh powder. I took a few early runs on the Crescent lift with Geoff Chu and Nelson Dang in the untracked powder. At 9:30 Alan Teramura led about 14 of us over to the Canyons side of the resort for an adventurous tour. On Wednesday the sun shone brightly and about 12 (that I know of) of us went over to Deer Valley. I took a mountain tour which promised to destroy the myth that Deer Valley is just for “groomers”. Sure enough, we found enough un-groomed, off-piste and tree skiing to completely exhaust me by lunch time. Thursday brought another inch of snow which was good for those of us (19) who partook of the NASTAR races. Our final day on Friday was again brightly sunny, a perfect end to our trip. The snow was plentiful all week and the slopes were so soft that I, for one, felt I could ski anywhere (even “blacks”) with no worries about rocks, stumps or ice.

Along the way, the club met up daily for lunch, usually on the slopes, and for après ski quaffing, sometimes slope-side and also on Main Street. We had our traditional pot luck dinner in two of our condominiums at the Lodge on Tuesday. Our farewell pizza party on Friday was hosted by John and Kathy Ritter at their magnificent house in Park City. Once again LeBus picked us up on time (at a reasonable hour for a change) and we arrived at SLC in plenty of time for our flight home.
