PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Well, another successful Hawaii Ski Week, has come and gone, and mahalos aplenty to Susan Murata for the initial groundwork, to Trips Committee Chair Jonathan Carr for all the hard work of coordinating it, and to   Craig Shaffer, Cathy Lau, and Larry Thurston for their able assistance.

I also want to extend my gratitude to the Board for keeping things together, to the degree they could, in my absence and special thanks to Jonathan, who was already pretty bogged down with preparations for Hawaii Ski Week, for getting a newsletter out in November and for taking care of a late tax return for the Club in October. In order to take care of the return, he had to come up to the skilled nursing facility where I was being treated, get the key to my house, and find the necessary information.

I got back to Hawaii in late September, but it wasn't until early December that I got home to access my computer and somewhat later before I could become re-involved in Club business.  The lack of updates to our website, lack of monthly newsletters, and the downturn in monthly Club activities, from August, 2013 to the present, clearly reflects the consequences of having too much responsibility concentrated in one person (me) and having the Board at less than full strength.   Elections for the 2013-2014 Board are almost upon us (early April), and now is the time to consider contributing a few hours of your time, and your mind, to the Club.  Board Meetings take about an hour a month, and you may be asked to host a Pau Hana, plan and coordinate an activity such as a Chili Cook-Off, a Saturday/Sunday hike or bike, an excursion, or other activity that we haven't yet considered.   We need some ideas and the people to bring them to fruition, as well as helping with some of the more mundane duties of running a Club, and don't forget that Jonathan will need help with Hawaii Ski Week 2015.  If you would like to join the Board, contact Jonathan jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com

Speaking of Hawaii Ski Week, 2015, the choices, if you haven't already heard, are Vail, Steamboat Springs, and Crested Butte, all in Colorado.  Be sure and return the Ballot you have received/will be receiving in the near future.  I hope to be sufficiently recovered to go on that trip, but no "promises:" I may not know in time to sign up.

Speaking of trips, as I write this, a number of Ski Club members are skiing/boarding in Rusutsu, Hokkaido, Japan.  Due to considerations of time, energy, and "staffing" (a little "thin" on the Board), we weren't able to plan a second trip this year, as we had in recent past years, but I am very pleased that a number of you got together, yourselves,  on another trip.  Promoting skiing/boarding as healthy recreational pursuits is the raison d'etre of the Club, and the more days you go, whether or not it is an "official" Club trip, the more successful we have been.

Hope to see you at the General Meeting on March 6.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Seven Palms Bar and Grill (formerly Sam Sneads)
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943 Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
March 6 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Come to our General Membership Meeting at the usual location on March 6.   Although the meeting doesn't "officially" begin until 6:00 P.M., many members start coming at 5:00 for drinks, dinner, and "talking story."  You need to be there by 5:30 P.M. to take advantage of the reduced prices of dinners for two.

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S GRILL
March 28 (Friday), 4:00 P.M.

I thought we had been back to Ryan's more recently than June of 2012, but I can't find a record of it---so it's time---before they tear down the Ward Center for high priced condos.   Ryan's Grill is on the second level of Ward Center, just opposite the escalator from ground level.   If you are lucky enough to find a good parking spot in the adjoining, street-side garage, you can just walk across (I hope I do because I can't walk "so good" yet). For those of you who might be unfamiliar with Ryan's, it has a humongous beer selection, drinks of all kinds, pretty decent pupus, and has been a favorite Pau Hana location of the downtown crowd (think "Yuppie") since  it's been open.   I'll try to score a table to the left of the entrance, and, hopefully, we can add as the crowd grows.  If you don't see us there, look on the lanai to the far left (behind the bar).   Although members usually arrive when they can,  anybody who can get there at 4:00 P.M., to help me claim "squatters rights" to an appropriately sized table, would be appreciated.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Seven Palms Bar and Grill (formerly Sam Sneads)
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House

April 3 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Come to our General Membership Meeting at the usual location on April 3 to vote for the 2014-2015 Board.    Although the meeting doesn't "officially" begin until 6:00 P.M., many members start coming at 5:00 for drinks, dinner, and "talking story."   You need to be there by 5:30 P.M. to take advantage of the reduced prices of dinners for two.

PAU HANA AT CATTLE COMPANY
98-1262 Kaahamanu St.
Pearl City, Hawaii
April 25 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

Another one of my watering holes on the way home from work. It never disappoints. Aside from Moose's on Lewers Street, I can't think of a more economical Happy Hour. $3.00 pints and wells - 50% off on selected pupus and the bartender always allows a couple drinks at Happy Hour prices upon last call. Conveniently located just off the H-1 Waimalu exit, there is plenty parking. Upon leaving there is always a line outside the door so the food must be good or cheap or both, should you choose to dine after the Pau Hana.  Hope to see you there.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

HAWAII SKI WEEK 2014
SUN PEAKS, B.C., CANADA
January 17 - January 25

There was beautiful weather and even a dusting of snow at the end of ski week for 51 members of the ski club. Sun Peaks was a great mountain with enough variety in terrain to keep skiers and boarders occupied all week. Members from the outer islands, and even one from Australia joined for a week of camaraderie and snow. Breakfast in the hotel every day was a great way to meet up with everyone and find people to ski with during the day or find out who was taking a day off.  A few people took advantage of riding snow mobiles, visiting Silverstar, (a nearby ski area) and even an art class given in the Nancy Green Cahilty hotel.

A number of our skiers hit the slopes with Nancy Greene, the Sun Peaks Director of Skiing and Canadian Senator, who brought back Olympic Gold for Canada in the 1960's.  She hasn't lost any of her skill, showing them her favorite runs, and apparently her husband is quite a speedster in his own right, coming from the members that skied with him.

A group of members took in the Kamloops Blazers Hockey game, which included the bus ride and a chance to eat in Kamloops.  Those who went were satisfied with a lively game and the ability to experience watching a hockey game in person.

Eleven of our adventurous members enjoyed a fondue dinner and evening descent down the easy 5 mile run. There was a gorgeous sunset at the top of the Sunburst Express lift when we arrived at the Sunburst Restaurant. We enjoyed a dinner of veggies and assorted meats in a cheese and mushroom broth fondue, then chocolate fondue for dessert.  After a hearty dinner... we all donned our headlamps to cruise down the green run down to the village.  Lights were placed at the sides of the run at intervals, but it was a surreal descent watching the headlamps of our fellow skiers and a wonderful view of the village lights as we came to the bottom of the hill.

There was the usual potluck to show how innovative we can be when cooking without kitchens and the pizza party and awards ended a great week in Canada.
