June 16 (Thursday) 5:30 P.M. Board Meeting at Henry Loui's.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
At our May Board Meeting last Thursday, I learned that, with the ink hardly dry on the announcement, six members had already registered for Hawaii Ski Week in Jackson Hole next January. I also learned that a number of members are making their own arrangements for a ski trip to Japan this coming February, and I wonder if the early dates for the Club trip afforded some of them the space on the calendar to do this. The 2016 Ski Season has barely ended and Ski Club diehards are already thinking snow. Yeah! By the way, if you have friends and acquaintances who are considering joining the Club and registering for Jackson Hole, remember that we are now on reduced dues, $15.00 for Single Memberships and $25.00 for Family Memberships, for the remainder of the membership year. Reduced dues are in effect from April 1 to September 30.
Another item of interest from the Board Meeting is the fact that we have decided to make permanent the previously limited time offer of a free tee shirt to each new "membership." When we started this in May, 2014, the idea was to provide an additional incentive to join and to whittle down our remaining stock before re-ordering. After only brief discussion, however, we decided that we CAN afford to continue, and, moreover, it is very appropriate from a number of standpoints.
As you can see from the June "Calendar of Events," we have a pretty full schedule this month including a Saturday morning hike in Kaneohe: I'm coming out of "retirement," and I just hope the trail system below the Pali hasn't changed much since the last time I did it. I remember the time I took some Ski Clubbers to Pauoa Flats, behind Tantalus, which had been my "stomping grounds" in the past, found a more defined trail, turned the wrong way, found a chain link fence (apparently for the wild pigs) which hadn't been there before, and got totally lost for a short time: So much for being the hike leader!
Hope to see some of you at CC's Lounge tomorrow evening, at the General Membership Meeting this coming Thursday, and at other upcoming events.
A hui hou kakou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA
at
CC's LOUNGE KAROKE BAR &
GRILL
Aiea Town Square
99-080 Kauhale St. #D-11
Aiea, Hawaii 96701
May 27 (Friday), 5 P.M.
Let's all get together to kick off the Memorial Day weekend for a pau hana at CC's Lounge which is a karaoke bar and grill located in the AIEA TOWN SQUARE! This is the small shopping center located on the Ocean side of Moanaua Rd. just after Aiea Heights Drive (coming from town). Take a left onto Kauhale St. right after passing Aiea Heights Drive and take a right into the shopping Center. CC's is a small, intimate venue with "happy hour" prices between 5 and 7pm. Their karaoke song book is massive so anyone so inclined will surely find something fitting to perform (or not!!!) One of the bartenders has a very good voice and she loves to join in with the customers or sing on her own when not serving drinks. The food menu is limited but everything is freshly prepared and quite ono!!! SEE YOU THERE!!!

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Irons Table and Tavern
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943
Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
June 2 (Thursday), 5:00 P.M.
Come to Irons Table and Tavern for our June General Membership Meeting In case you haven't been there yet, Irons is the most recent incarnation of Sam Sneads/Seven Palms. Although we like to start ordering food and drink around 5:00 P.M., actual Ski Club "business" won't begin until sometime between 5:30 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. If you are on Nimitz Highway under the freeway structure and going in the Pearl Harbor direction, you take a right hand turn onto Valkenburgh and look for the entrance, on your right, to the Golf Course. You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive off of Salt Lake Blvd: In this case, the entrance would be on your left. Hope to see you at Irons on May 5.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
For The
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
SUMMER GAMES
UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII - MANOA
June 4 (Saturday), 12:30 P.M. -
5:30 P.M.
Ski Club members will volunteer to help at the Special Olympics Summer
Games at UH Manoa lower campus on Saturday, June 4 (12:30-5:30 pm). The athletes
include a large number from the neighbor islands, and all are excited and
enthusiastic about the competitions. Over 1,100 athletes and coaches will
compete on June 3-5. Events include Softball, Swimming, Track & Field, and
Power lifting. Special Olympics Hawaii relies heavily on volunteers to staff the
events and has become an annual volunteer opportunity for the ski club. As of
this newsletter, we have a sufficient number of volunteers. If there are
"dropouts," additional volunteers will be requested via separate email.

HIKE FROM KOOLAU GOLF COURSE
June 18 (Saturday)
9:00 A.M.
We did this hike in September, 2012 and had scheduled it again for September, 2013, but on the day of the hike, yours truly, the hiking leader for the day, was lying in a New Zealand hospital bed with two broken legs: I guess it's been postponed long enough. It's a relatively short hike (about 1.75 miles, round trip--unless you opt to go up a ladder and walk the extra distance to the Pali Lookout, approximately another mile). This is a bit "technical" at a few spots (rocks, roots, the need to duck under branches, mud and wet rocks near the waterfall if it's been raining, and one short steep section with 2 ropes). The route varies from typical Hawaiian trail to old, paved pathway, to concrete road (the Kaneohe portion of the old road coming down from the Pali which is closed to traffic,). We will detour to a waterfall, retrace our steps, continue uphill on the trail, end up on the old road, and walk up to a grassy area between the two viaducts coming out of the Pali Tunnel. Those who are more adventurous and want a longer journey can go under the viaduct, climb a approximately 6' wooden ladder with a missing rung or onto the frame of a broken, wooden staircase, hoist themselves onto a wall, go up a short trail to the old road coming down from the Pali Lookout, and walk up to the lookout. Following whichever end point you choose, we will return to the parking lot by walking down the old road and allowing our minds to wander and imagine the times before the tunnel. To get to the Koolau Golf Course parking lot, turn off Kamehameha Highway, running between the Pali and Likelike Highways, onto Kionaole Rd. If you are coming from the Pali, it is the first left after you go under the H3 overpass, and there is a turn lane. If you're coming from the Likelike side, it is the right hand turn, of course, before the overpass. Take a left down Kionaole Rd., at first paralleling Kamehameha Highway, and just follow the signs to the Golf Course/First Presbyterian Church. Park by the trail head in the upper left hand corner of the parking lot. See you there.

PAU HANA AT BLUE TR0PIX BAR AND GRILL
PEARLRIDGE CENTER
June 24
(Friday) 4:00 P.M.
We were at Blue Tropix Bar and Grill for Halloween
last year. It's conveniently located in Pearlridge where
Denny's used to be, across the street from Chili's and American Savings Bank.
If you are turning in from Kamehameha Highway, it is on the right hand side just
before the pedestrian overpass. If you are coming from Honolulu side,
however, you might encounter less traffic by driving into Aiea on Moanalua Rd.
and taking a left down Pali Momi. There's lots of parking including the
roof-top and Sears. Live music, a pool table, a dart room, about 20 TVs, $3.00 draft beer, Happy
Hour specials, and onolicious food are the draw. The address is 98-151 Pali Momi, Aiea, HI 96701. Check out Blue Tropix on
Yahoo.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2017
JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING
January 7 - January 14
Hawaii Ski Week 2017 will be at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, January 7 - January 14, and registration is directly with our travel agency for the trip, Ski.com. Click on https://events.ski.com/GroupListing.aspx . If this does not work, Go online to www.ski.com, click on "GROUPS" at the top of the page, scroll down and click on "JOIN A GROUP" on the lright hand side, and our trip should appear with a link to the registration form. The form will have the prices, flights (may change) and lodging details. You can view these things after entering your name. If you don’t want to continue registering, you can log out.
Jackson Hole Resort features 2,500 acres of skiing with an
aerial tram which takes skiers 4,139 feet to the top of the mountain at 10,450
feet in 12 minutes. They also have an eight person gondola, and, new for the
2016-2017 season, another 8 person gondola serving the base area, 8 quad lifts,
1 triple and 2 doubles. The club will be staying in Teton Village, which is the
name of the area near the lifts. The cowboy/rancher town of Jackson, Wyoming is
a 12 mile bus ride away for a fare of $3 one way.
For those of you who
like hotel-like accommodations, we have reservations at the Snake River Lodge
(SRL). The SRL is very near the aerial tram and 150 yards from the gondola. Your
price at the SRL includes daily breakfast and a package of other benefits. We have unbundled the lift tickets, since
they are the same price as the ones offered by Ski.com. So, the SRL package
price is $844 for a double queen room. The king deluxe is higher, but if we get
12 rooms assigned, it will be a free upgrade.
We are also offering 2, 3
and 4 bedroom condos on West Michael Drive in Teton Village. The 4 bedroom Wind
River condos are 100 yards from the Moose Creek quad chairlift. The 2 and 3
bedroom condos are 200 yards from the lift. You can also take a free shuttle to
the tram station and the base area of Teton Village. All condos have 1 bath per bedroom. We
will try to get the most single beds we can in the condos. The condos are $550
per person for 3 and 4 bedroom and $625 for a 2 bedroom.
The registration and your $200 deposit are due by June 30. We
have blocked rooms based on what we think demand will be. To guarantee you get
the room you want, please register as soon as possible. That will also help us
gauge demand. If you have roommates, please send us a list. Airfare right now is
$995. We expect this to come down some, and there may be schedule and airline
changes. We will keep you informed about it. Your deposits are fully refundable,
and options can be added or deleted, up to September 30th.

WOMEN'S AND FAMILY SHELTER
546 Kaaahai St.
Honolulu, Hawaii
May 21 (Saturday)
Six Ski Club Members travelled to the IHS' Women's and Family shelter late Saturday morning on May 21 to assist in serving a hot lunch to the residents. Although the process was the same as at the Men's Shelter, where we have been on numerous occasions, there were fewer residents to feed at this venue, and we were "out of there" in fifteen to twenty minutes. Once outside the facility, it took us longer to decide where to go for our own lunch than it had taken us to serve lunch to the residents. We ended up at New Eagle Cafe on Nimitz Highway where the prices are very reasonable, serving sizes gargantuan, and several of us went home with enough leftovers for a second meal.
