PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

There I was, just two days ago, sitting on the stationary bicycle at the Nuuanu Y, surfing through the channels on the attached T.V.,  and I came across a  big air skiing competition in Vermont followed by snowboarder Jeremy Jones in the high mountain back country, with breathtaking scenery and shots of more breathtaking descents, talking about how hiking to big mountain terrain is more environmentally friendly than using helicopters or snowmobiles.  While the big air park skiing didn't remind me of anyone currently in the club, the Jeremy Jones segment did remind me of Jon Kleinschmidt from at least one past club trip and his more current escapades(see Kuliouou story below).  Thankfully, the next scheduled hike, around Aiea Loop Trail, will be more "user friendly" and, hopefully, will attract more member participation.  Hopefully, my bothersome left knee, which has kept me off the trails for several months,  will have improved enough by then to allow my participation.

Hiking, of course, helps condition the lower body.   The paddle to to Mokuluas,  which I would sign up for in an instant if I were going to be in town that weekend, will be a workout for upper body.  At this writing,  there is some question as to whether there is enough interest to make it happen so if you're thinking about going, be sure to answer Geof's email, sent a couple of days ago, as soon as possible.

Finally, I'm sorry to report that Jenna "NASTAR" Surwilo, has left the Board due to her coming job re-assignment to the East Coast.   We'll miss her, are grateful for her contributions during the year she served, and wish her the best of luck in her new job assignment.  Meanwhile, as a result, we now have a mid-term vacancy which, per our By-Laws, can be filled by appointment rather than election.  If any of you out there have some ideas for the Club and don't mind giving up a couple of hours early on a Thursday evening once a month,  please email or call me at 224-1065.

Hope to see you at the General Membership Meeting, where you can sign up for next year's ski trips, this coming Thursday night and/or at our other scheduled activities.

Aloha,

TOBY

WAIKIKI AQUARIUM CONCERT SERIES
June 16 - August 11

The Hawaii Ski Club is again appealing to our members to support our Waikiki Aquarium with much needed (and very much appreciated) manpower during their annual fundraising evening concert series this summer.   Proceeds will go towards installation of a photovoltaic power system for the Acquarium.  Volunteers assist with such tasks as setting up and taking down tables and chairs, hanging posters, manning entrances, emptying trash containers, selling scrip, and serving food. Set up starts at 3pm and closing down starts when the concert ends at 9pm.

Please sign up as soon as possible to help with one or more concerts:  Jake Shimbukuro on June 16, Olomana on June 30th, Amy Hanaiali'i on July 14, Na Palapalai and Mailani on July 28, and the Brothers Cazimero on August 11.  Not only will you be supporting a very good cause, but you will also enjoy free admission to the concert ($45 value) as well as dinner from the restaurant being featured at the concert.   Contact Wandi Sagum sagum001@hawaii.rr.com

PAU HANA AT MONTEREY BAY CANNERS
June 17 (Friday) 5:30 P.M.

Please join us for our next Pau Hana on Friday, June 17, 5:30 P.M. at Monterey Bay Canners. There is always something good going on at Monterey Bay Canners.  From delicious dining to fun and cocktails in the lounge, you’ll always find MBC a great place to be.  Monterey Bay Canners is located in the Pearlridge West section of Pearlridge Center.   To get there from Kamehameha Highway, turn off the highway onto Kaonohi St. (where you see Anna Millers), take the entrance into the shopping center right behind Anna Millers, take a left, and follow your nose up to Monterey Bay Canners.  Be forewarned that the different sections of Pearlridge Center are not necessarily interconnected, and another entrance may not get you to the MBC.   See you on June 17.

 AIEA LOOP TRAIL HIKE/LUNCH
 June 26 (Sunday), 8:30 A.M.

Compared to some of the other hikes we have had, this will be a "walk in the park."  Although it is 4.4 miles long,  it is more or less level, and some of the trail  is sidewalk-wide.  There are beautiful mountain views as well as a spectacular view of the H3 heading up towards the tunnel (Ugh!).  The middle and final sections, however, are typical "Hawaiian style" trail with roots, rocks, and some mud.  How much mud will depend upon most recent weather.  Also,  unless the DLNR has been out recently with chainsaws for trail maintenance (in this economy, I doubt it), there might  be some fallen trees to step over.  The hike should take from 2.5 - 3 hours.  We will start from  the top parking lot in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area at the top of Aiea Heights Drive.   Drive up the hill 2.7 miles from the intersection of Aiea Heights Drive and Moanalua Rd., where Times Supermarket and Aiea Bowl are located, and you will enter the park.   Drive  up another .5 miles on the park loop road, and you will come to a parking lot with a covered picnic pavilion on the left and a restroom straight ahead.   Park and look for Susan and/or other Ski Club hikers waiting for you.  If you go around the loop at the top and start going downhill past the last of the parked cars, you've gone too far and will have to go around again (the road is one way)   Afterwards,  at 12 P.M.  ski club members who were unable to make the hike can join the group for lunch at Aiea Bowl.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2012

Your Trip Committee has been hard at work getting you the best prices for our two trips for 2012.

Ski Week - Big Sky, Montana - January 27 - February 4, 2012. This is our official Hawaii Ski Week trip for 2012! Full packages start at $1582.

1) Ski in/out Huntley hotel room with a free breakfast buffet. The hotel is located in the Village and has two Queen beds in the room with a small refrigerator. Double occupancy.

2) Walk in/out Bighorn condo's, 3 bedroom/3 bath, good for 6 occupants. This is a short walk to the slopes and you can connect via the Poma lift. See this link for more details on a poma lift. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platter_lift

We are also planning a Yellowstone Snowmobile day trip - if you're interested in that, purchase only a 5-day lift ticket package to be able to make it as it will be an all day trip. More details on that later - they're closed for the season right now!

Your lift tickets will be good at Big Sky mountain. To ski on both mountains (Moonlight Basin and Big Sky), there is an additional fee that you can pay at any lift ticket office (we thought it easier if you coordinate with friends on what day to go, meet at the ticket office, pay (approximately $27 more) and ski on TWO mountains.)
See you at the June meeting!

Big White, Canada - is located in the picturesque Okanagan Valley.   Big White is uniquely blessed with sunny weather, dry powder and a mild average temperature of -5C (23 F). With 118 marked runs fanning from the summit, 2,565 acres of skiable terrain, and 16 lifts, there‘s a great selection of terrain for everyone with deep powder bowls, wide-open glades, and great fall-line cruising. For the ultimate park experience, head to the award winning TELUS Terrain Park which is the best progressive park in North America. To top it off, slalom through the spectacular“Snowghosts” (snow caked trees) which create a magical backdrop in this winter playground.

Trip dates are March 9-17, which is the DOE Spring Break. Bring your whole family! Kids ski free with a paid adult lift ticket.

Air Canada is an affiliate of United Airlines so get mileage for United, AND one bag is free! Everyone who goes on this trip MUST HAVE A PASSPORT.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

KULIOUOU RIDGE HIKE
(Renamed the Noname Ridge Hike)

On Sunday, May 15, an intrepid trio gathered at the trailhead for what we thought would be a hike on the Kuliouou Ridge Trail.  However, our fearless leader, Jon, persuaded us to take “the road not taken” and head towards the adjacent ridge for a trail he found behind the BWS pumping station to the left. Normally it would take a winding 2 hours to make it to the ridgeline on Kuliouou, but the trail on the other side went straight up (with the aid of ropes in certain steep areas) and only took 25 minutes. From there we traversed the ridgeline into the back of the valley, discovering breathtaking views of Diamond Head and Molokai as well as delicate flowers and, according to Jon, some really ono Guava! Near the back of the valley there is one last big peak that required the assistance of ropes to climb and it was there that decided to call it “No Mas” this time since it was getting close to lunchtime, and we were almost out of water.  So we returned to the trailhead and headed out to the Greek Mari na restaurant for a great lunch of Gyros and Lamb Souvlaki.  All in all it was a great adventure! Thanks to Jon for being our fearless leader and to Momi for being our “voice of reason.” (Next time I follow Jon somewhere I have to remember to pack extra water and gloves.)

PAU HANA AT PABLO'S

On Friday, April 29,  at least twelve (I didn't count) ski club members braved the raging rain storm surging across the island to gather at Pablo's in the Ward Center for magaritas, Mexican (or Mexican themed) food, and general conviviality.   Initial "arrive-ees" successfully moved the party inside from its intended venue on the lanai (to save us from getting wet), and Bill Hodges used his always impressive pursuasive skills to get us lanai prices.   This has always been a good location for Pau Hanas, and it was relieving to find that, despite the change in name, ownership, and menu,  the prices were still reasonable, the wait staff generally attentive, and the food good (at least mine was).

   PAU HANA AT SCHOONERS

There was only good cheer for the ski club members that dared show up on Friday the 13th (of May) for a Pau Hana at Schooner's Restaurant on Pearl Harbor Bay.  Approximately twenty members enjoyed the easily accessible and free parking,  the company, happy hour prices for drinks and pupus, and a very nice sunset over the water.
