PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As you can see, just six weeks after the Special Olympics, we are volunteering for another project, to paint a portion of the Linapuni Elementary School exterior on July 11.  This will be our third painting project for the DOE and our fourth overall:  Our first was the Palolo Chinese Home in Palolo Valley, which, I think, was three years ago, but I may be wrong.  I've said this before, but I'll say it again:  Our volunteering activity has really taken off under Roy Manzoku and, I, as well as our repeat volunteers, certainly appreciate it.  So, of course, do the benficiaries of our activity:  Roy just shared the following letter from Special Olympics:

Thank you very much for volunteering in our Healthy Athlete Venue at our 2015 State Summer Games! Because of you and your amazing Hawaii Ski Club Volunteers, athletes from across the State of Hawaii enjoyed an awesome weekend of sports, fun and free medical screenings/information! I received so many positive comments about the weekend from our athletes, their families and coaches – all of which was possible because of your support. Please pass along our sincere appreciation all of your volunteers – they truly made this weekend special for our Athletes!

The empowerment you all have given to our athletes will remain with them, not only when they participate in sports, but more so in their daily lives! You have inspired them to be the best they can be and their lives are better because of you and your spirit of volunteerism!

Please let me know if there is anything we can do on our side, to make your volunteer experience more enjoyable! Any suggestion you may have would be greatly appreciated!

On behalf of the athletes and staff of Special Olympics Hawaii, aloha and mahalo for your continued support!

Getting a group together for the "comedy night" at the Waikiki Shell on August 1 was former Board Member Cathy Lau's idea which I also appreciate.  I have to admit I was, privately, a bit skeptical, at first, but several members expressed interest in this at the Ryan's Pau Hana so here we go.  As I've said before, if you have an idea for a Ski Club activity, don't be shy:  Let me via phone or email pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .

I am happy to report that, as of last Wednesday, we have twenty nine people signed up for Park City and eight more who had notified us of their intention to register. I am sure more of you will decide to come within the very near future.  We needed a minimum of twenty five, which we now have, to lock in the prices. Sigh! Relief? There has been some talk, which I fully understand, about the higher than expected  price of the Park City trip.  Park City is not only a popular location, but it turned out that we were overlapping with the last two days of the Sundance Film Festival, and many of the hotels in town, including the ski in/ski out properties were filled including one or two  that we were considering.  Scheduling the trip one or two weeks later, however, would have meant even higher rates.  At one point, Jonathan was thinking of recommending that we forget about Park City as too expensive and go to the second choice.  As much as experience is the best teacher, each year also turns out to be a new experience, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Trip Committee for navigating the issues and making the judgment calls, some of which aren't easy.  If you have concerns or ideas, please don't hesitate to share them with me or Jonathan.  You might also want to consider volunteering for future trip committees to, maybe, translate your suggestions and ideas into action.

Hope to see you at the General Membership Meeting on July 2.  If I don't, have a Happy Independence Day and, maybe,  I'll see you at one of the other upcoming activities.

A hui hou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
SCHOONER'S RESTAURANT
57 ARIZONA MEMORIAL DRIVE
PEARL HARBOR
July 2 (Thursday) 5:30 PM

Come to Schooners for our July General Membership Meeting. Though there are no Sunset Specials for dinner, there are special on pupus until 6 PM, and some of us can make a meal of pupus. Members usually start arriving at 5:00 PM.  For those of you who haven't yet been to Schooners, it's right near the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial Drive) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with plenty of free parking. See you there.

VOLUNTEER PAINTING PROJECT
LINAPUNI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
1434 Linapuni St., Honolulu, 96819
July 11 (Saturday) 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We need more volunteers to help on a painting project at Linapuni Elementary School. This is an interesting school; an Early Childhood Center serving Pre-K to Grade 1.  Please contact Roy Manzoku, roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com to volunteer for this worthy project.   You can check out their website: http://www.linapuniel.k12.hi.us/Site/Welcome.html .  Following the project, we will adjourn to an as yet undecided venue for lunch on the Club.

PAU HANA AT LA MARIANA SAILING CLUB
50 Sand Island Road, Honolulu
July 24 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.

It's been a while since we've been to La Mariana Sailing Club so on Friday, July 24, we will be summarily rectifying the oversight.   For those who have never been there, it is an out-of-the-way Tiki Bar adorned with hand-me-down netting, float balls, tikis, and other nautical or faux nautical memorabilia from Waikiki tiki bars that, long ago, closed down.  As I understand it,  La Mariana started as a private club house for the small adjoining marina, and the owner, Arnette Nahinu, actually lived upstairs and continued to oversee the operation until her passing about three to four years ago.  It is now managed by her remaining staff.  You won't find any tourists and it is questionable, due to the lack of signage, weather tourists could even find it.  Go towards Sand Island on Sand Island Rd. for 1/2 mile from the Nimitz Highway intersection and look for the McKesson Distributors building on your left:  It is the building with the concrete truck ramp going up towards the roof.  On the far side of the building, there is a road, without signage, going to the right.  Go down this road, take another right, and find a place to park. You are there.  La Mariana is right on the ocean side sans welcoming signage. There are brick walkways, on either side going towards the water.  You can ignore the sign-in book at the entrance for Marina members.  Bring cash as they don't accept individual payments for parties of ten or more, and we'll only get one check.  I have a table, under my name,  reserved for twelve, but I'm sure we can squeeze in as many as necessary.   See you there!

LAUGH UNDER THE STARS
WAIKIKI SHELL
August 1, (Saturday) 4 PM (Gates open at 5:00 PM)

Several Club Members have expressed interest in going to the Waikiki Shell on Saturday evening, August 1, just like we did last year for the Back in the Day concert, except this time it's local comedians instead of music.  Performers include, but will not be limited to, Augie T, Frank DeLima, Andy Bumatai, and Ed Kaahea.  The line, for a good spot on the lawn where we plan to go, usually starts an hour or so before the gate opens, so come with a seat back (beach chairs with legs not allowed) sometime before 5, look for your friends in line, and avoid the "stink face" stares of those whom you are pushing further back.  Don't bring your own food and drink:  It's not allowed.  The cheapest tickets are available at the Blaisdell box office on Ward Ave. or at the Shell box office on the night of the event.  Box office tickets for the lawn are $21.00 including the overhead charge, but are considerably more expensive from the third party vendors like Ticketmaster.  For more details go to http://www.blaisdellcenter.com/?s=laugh+under+the+stars

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2016
January 29 - February 6

We will be going to Park City, Utah for the 2016 Hawaii Ski Week. As many of you know, Vail Resorts has purchased the Park City Mountain Resort. This summer they plan to install an 8 passenger gondola to connect Park City with Canyons Resort, already managed by Vail Resorts. This will create, in their words, the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of terrain. They also plan a new restaurant at the Park City gondola terminus (bottom of Silverload lift), and upgrades to the King Kong and Motherlode lifts. Ski.com will be providing discounted lift tickets, obviously good on both mountains. The adult 5 day ticket will be $330 and the senior 5 day lift ticket will be $250. Ski.com will also provide one day lift tickets for Deer Valley for those of you who want to spend the day there. These tickets will cost $90, which is a good discount from this year’s $115 window price. As we mentioned earlier, you may want to purchase an epic pass from Vail Resorts for the season. These will also be available from Ski.com, but we don’t know the details on this now.

Because you ski club members have stated categorically that ski-in/ski-out access is a priority, we have chosen to stay primarily at The Lodge at the Mountain Village. In addition to ski-in/ski-out access, the Lodge is 20 yards from the Payday Lift, a 6 person high speed lift. There is a mini mall next door with 4 ski shops and some restaurants. The Lodge offers hotel rooms, studio suites, and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos. We have reserved one 4 bedroom condo, four 3 bedroom condos and 4 hotel rooms. The hotel rooms have refrigerators and coffee makers. We say we are staying “primarily” at the Lodge because they do not offer hotel rooms with two beds. For our singles we have reserved some hotel rooms across the street at the Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel. These rooms will have two queen beds. The Park City free shuttle bus stops at the Lodge, and the Lodge also offers free point to point on demand shuttle service. Main Street, Park City, with all its shops and restaurants is about 1/2 mile away. The Lodge features an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, numerous hot tubs, free wireless internet, a fitness center and their own ice rink (for a fee). The Lodge has plenty of meeting space for our traditional reception, pot luck and farewell pizza party.

Our non-stop flights to Salt Lake City are as follows:

• Delta-1104 V Depart: HNL 1/29/2016 09:55 pm Arrive: SLC 1/30/2016 07:11 am
• Delta-1105 V Depart: SLC 2/6/2016 11:55 am Arrive: HNL 2/6/2016 03:35 pm

Since we are arriving so early, and it is only an hour and a half to Park City, one could ski on Saturday, our arrival day. That would give you seven days of skiing.

Of course, transfers to and from the airport are included. Park City is more expensive than Steamboat. We will be paying about $300 to $400 more for a full package. The full package price (air, transfer, 7 nights lodging, 5 day lift ticket) will range from $1,800 to $2,000.

This year we would like to try something different for registration. You will be able to register and pay for the trip online directly with Ski.com, and pay them directly by check or credit card. This will relieve the trip committee of some work, although we will still be responsible for roommate assignments. Ski.com anticipates have this service ready about May 20th. We will inform you of when to contact them for registration. Pray for snow.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S

I counted twelve Ski Club members imbibing, grinding on pupus, and talking story at Ryans on Friday evening, June 19 at about 6 PM when I left for another "engagement." I heard that most of the group left shortly after I did.   It's reasonably easy to find parking on one of the  levels of the adjacent parking structure, and the fare and service never fail to please at this old "stalwart" venue.  We'll be back next year, or maybe sooner, if it's still standing and hasn't yet succumbed, along with its neighbors, to the "new order" for the area.
