PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I just got back from a week on the Mainland where I had gone for a family occasion/celebration and an opportunity to take a couple of extra days to visit longstanding skiing friends, whom I knew only from the slopes in Utah, who had given me an invitation to spend a couple of days with them in their home on the beach in Long Island, New York.  What a beautiful house on the water, and what a two day feast of free  clams, mussels, and flounder, from the ocean right outside their house!   I was reminded of what a great leveler our sport is.  No matter who we are or where we come from,  we are all the same sliding down the mountain and enjoying apre-ski activities.

Back home from the slopes, however, we have very distinct lives, areas of interest, and schedules to maintain, and while a continuing challenge to be sure,   I am pleased (relieved?) and sometimes, amazed that we have been able to come up with ongoing activities to bring you guys out to keep the comeraderie going.    The ongoing Monday "Tennis Hui" has become enshrined in tradition, the June Pau Hana at Monterey Bay Canners, with twenty participants, was an obvious winner, the hikes continue to draw small to medium crowds on an ongoing basis,  our Chili Cookoff last year seemed to have brought out just as many, perhaps a few more,  members than the pre-Thanksgiving dinner that it replaced, and I am sure that the coming July 4th celebration at Hawaii Kai will prove as popular as last year's.   If you can't make it to our July 4th party in Hawaii Kai, you are going to miss a heck of a good show.  I'm disappointed that the "Kayaking to the Mokes" fizzled,  but, maybe, it's a message.   Meanwhile, if you have some ideas for future activities or want to invite other members along to activities which you enjoy, don't hesitate to contact me (see Contacts ) and, if appropriate, we'll put it on the schedule.

See you, I hope, on July 4th.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

WAIKIKI AQUARIUM CONCERT SERIES
June 16 - August 11
Next Concert: June 30

The Hawaii Ski Club is again appealing to our members to support our Waikiki Aquarium with much needed (and very much appreciated) manpower during their annual fundraising evening concert series this summer.   Proceeds will go towards installation of a photovoltaic power system for the Acquarium.  Volunteers assist with such tasks as setting up and taking down tables and chairs, hanging posters, manning entrances, emptying trash containers, selling scrip, and serving food. Set up starts at 3pm and closing down starts when the concert ends at 9pm.

Please sign up as soon as possible to help with one or more concerts:  Jake Shimbukuro on June 16, Olomana on June 30, Amy Hanaiali'i on July 14, Na Palapalai and Mailani on July 28, and the Brothers Cazimero on August 11.  Not only will you be supporting a very good cause, but you will also enjoy free admission to the concert ($45 value) as well as dinner from the restaurant being featured at the concert.   Contact Wandi Sagum sagum001@hawaii.rr.com

 AIEA LOOP TRAIL HIKE/LUNCH
 June 26 (Sunday), 8:30 A.M.

Compared to some of the other hikes we have had, this will be a "walk in the park."  Although it is 4.4 miles long,  it is more or less level, and some of the trail  is sidewalk-wide.  There are beautiful mountain views as well as a spectacular view of the H3 heading up towards the tunnel (Ugh!).  The middle and final sections, however, are typical "Hawaiian style" trail with roots, rocks, and some mud.  How much mud will depend upon most recent weather.  Also,  unless the DLNR has been out recently with chainsaws for trail maintenance (in this economy, I doubt it), there might  be some fallen trees to step over.  The hike should take from 2.5 - 3 hours.  We will start from  the top parking lot in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area at the top of Aiea Heights Drive.   Drive up the hill 2.7 miles from the intersection of Aiea Heights Drive and Moanalua Rd., where Times Supermarket and Aiea Bowl are located, and you will enter the park.   Drive  up another .5 miles on the park loop road, and you will come to a parking lot with a covered picnic pavilion on the left and a restroom straight ahead.   Park and look for Susan and/or other Ski Club hikers waiting for you.  If you go around the loop at the top and start going downhill past the last of the parked cars, you've gone too far and will have to go around again (the road is one way)   Afterwards,  at 12 P.M.  ski club members who were unable to make the hike can join the group for lunch at Aiea Bowl.

4TH OF JULY IN HAWAII KAI
1 p.m. to Whenever

4th of July in Hawaii Kai, at Maunalua Bay Beach Park,  was such a success last year that it's going to be "Deja Vu All Over Again" this year.  The Club will provide the tent, hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the fixin's.  You will provide your good cheer, your jokes and stories, your own drinks,  and anything else you might like to add to the feast (chips, pupus, etc.).  The Community Association will provide the music (Anuhea, Dennis Kamakahi, Manualua, and more), other activities including a Keiki Bike Parade, Keiki Fun Zone, and art demonstration, and, at 8 P.M.  if last year is any indication, probably, the most colorful and up-close-and-personal fireworks display you have ever seen (it was for me).  For those who didn't come last year, Maunalua Bay Beach Park is on the ocean side of Kalanianaole Highway opposite the intersection with Keahole St. and Hawaii Kai Towne Center.  We hope to have our tent set up just Kokohead of the restrooms and directly across Kalanianaole Highway from the Outback Steak House (where it was last year).   Free shuttles will be provided from Kaiser High School (off Lunalilio Home Rd in the mountain direction)  Koko Head Elementary School (off Lunalilio Home Rd. in the ocean direction), and Hahaione Elementary School (on Pepeekeo St. off Hawaii Kai Drive, probably the furthest of the three).  Although there are some closer spots where the more "creative" might find parking (and did last year), don't try Hawaii Kai Towne Center or the boat launching lot as these areas are restricted and will be policed.   ----But don't let the parking situation dissuade you:  We had a good crowd last year, and it was a good time.  See you on the 4th!!!!!

PAU HANA AT OCEANS 808
July 22 (Friday), 5 PM

The remodeled Oceans 808 (old Ocean Club), located in the Waterfront Plaza (formerly Restaurant Row) at 500 Ala Moana Boulevard, is a nightlife tour de force. With a massive sound system, color changing lights, and an enormous, bubble filled wall,  Oceans really starts happening after 9:30 PM. And those who want to stay late and check it out, GO FOR IT!

The HSC has been there since it was remodeled two years ago.

Nightly drink specials, a tempting pupu menu and an intimate, outdoor lanai perfect for taking a break from dancing or chatting with friends are just a few more extras that distinguish Oceans 808 from other venues. Happy Hour drinks and pupus are half price until 10:30 PM and the parking is free.

See you in town,

SKI TRIPS FOR 2012

Your Trip Committee has been hard at work getting you the best prices for our two trips for 2012.

Ski Week - Big Sky, Montana - January 27 - February 4, 2012. This is our official Hawaii Ski Week trip for 2012! Full packages start at $1582.

1) Ski in/out Huntley hotel room with a free breakfast buffet. The hotel is located in the Village and has two Queen beds in the room with a small refrigerator. Double occupancy.

2) Walk in/out Bighorn condo's, 3 bedroom/3 bath, good for 6 occupants. This is a short walk to the slopes and you can connect via the Poma lift. See this link for more details on a poma lift. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platter_lift

We are also planning a Yellowstone Snowmobile day trip - if you're interested in that, purchase only a 5-day lift ticket package to be able to make it as it will be an all day trip. More details on that later - they're closed for the season right now!

Your lift tickets will be good at Big Sky mountain. To ski on both mountains (Moonlight Basin and Big Sky), there is an additional fee that you can pay at any lift ticket office (we thought it easier if you coordinate with friends on what day to go, meet at the ticket office, pay (approximately $27 more) and ski on TWO mountains.)
See you at the June meeting!

Big White, CANADA - is located in the picturesque Okanagan Valley.   Big White is uniquely blessed with sunny weather, dry powder and a mild average temperature of -5C (23 F). With 118 marked runs fanning from the summit, 2,565 acres of skiable terrain, and 16 lifts, there‘s a great selection of terrain for everyone with deep powder bowls, wide-open glades, and great fall-line cruising. For the ultimate park experience, head to the award winning TELUS Terrain Park which is the best progressive park in North America. To top it off, slalom through the spectacular“Snowghosts” (snow caked trees) which create a magical backdrop in this winter playground.

Trip dates are March 9-17, which is the DOE Spring Break. Bring your whole family! Kids ski free with a paid adult lift ticket.

Air Canada is an affiliate of United Airlines so get mileage for United, AND one bag is free! Everyone who goes on this trip MUST HAVE A PASSPORT.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

JUNE PAU HANA AT MONTEREY BAY CANNERS

Central Oahu lived up to its name as 20 (yes, 20!) members gathered at Monterey Bay Canners for Pau Hana. Although the MBC staff had a rare “off night,” the group still enjoyed the food, company, and conversation. I think it is a sign of the times when the highlights of the night included Halloween photos being shared by Smartphone, a spirited debate on the best Smartphone “Apps” to have, and even a spontaneous iPhone tutorial session. What a tech-savvy group! Ah, the summer “silly season” continues… Stay tuned for future Pau Hana dates so you don’t miss out on the fun!
