PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As you can see from the schedule, we are not having our monthly General Membership Meeting next week, the first Thursday of July. Although cancellations of our monthly meetings are rare, they usually occur right on the heels of holidays, when many of us have other plans, or when there is a "perfect storm" of absence of Club officers to run the meeting. July is one of those times. If you're really missing the meeting and want to get together with some of your Ski Club friends whom you only see at Ski Club activities, come to the rum distillery tour on Saturday, July 16. Also, you could drop by the Keehi Lagoon tennis courts early evening on any Monday: Although I've never been, I understand that all are welcome to participate in the "Pau Tennis" refreshments and "social hour" following the games.
Of course, all are welcome to our Pau Hanas---even if you don't drink or don't drink much (like me these days). If you see we are starting one at 4 P.M. rather than a more sensible 5:00, it usually means that we can't reserve and need to "score" a table, if we can, to accommodate the crew that ultimately shows. Come early, if you can, to help "score" the table.
Although it's not on the schedule, we might be adding a hike in August so if you're interested, watch your email. We had a nice turnout for the hike in Kaneohe a couple of weeks ago, got to see some members we usually don't see, and, therefore, ought to do it again, soon. The question IS whether we would get as good a turnout on Honolulu side as in Kaneohe. Where to go? Decisions, decisions. Where do I know well enough to not take a wrong turn again?
As of this newsletter, there are only three days left to be assured of a spot on the trip to Jackson Hole so if you're thinking about it, "Just do it." We can usually accommodate people after the deadline, but there are no guarantees.
Y'all have a happy and safe 4th of July holiday.
A hui hou kakou,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
RUM DISTILLERY TOUR
MAUNALELE DISTILLERS, LLC
92-1770 Kunia Rd.. #227
Kunia Camp, Hawaii 96759
July 16 (Saturday) 11
A.M.
Mahalo to those of you who got back to us, on short notice, expressing interest in the rum distillery tour. Thirteen answered "Yes," and we'll probably get a few more, so we're doing it. As stated in the email, the cost is $15.00 (for Kama'aina) and will include a tour of the growing area, a tour of the distillery, and a rum tasting with appetizers. We will also visit the "Cane Juice Bar" where they serve locally made gelato. This is not a private tour for the Club (which would cost more than double per person): We are attaching ourselves to a regular tour so please be on time. From town, take H1 Eva bound to the Kunia Rd. exit. Drive North on Kunia Rd. a little over five miles until you reach Kunia Drive on the left. Turn left onto Kunia Drive, the U.S. Post Office will be on your right, and Maunalele Distillers will be in the green building across the street on your left. If there is interest after the tour, we may go to lunch in Wahiawa.

PAU HANA at HONOLULU BEER WORKS
328 Cooke St., Honolulu , Hawaii 96813
July 29 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
The club was last at Honolulu Beer Works in June of last year, everybody loved the tasty microbrews, so it's time. It's also time to give us "townies" a break from the drive to Aiea/Pearl City (although it wasn't too bad to Chez Sports Bar and Grill on June 24). This is a brewpub: They make their own beer on site. They also have food including sandwiches, pretzels, beer nuts, and sliders. They offer some wine, but the focus in on the beer: Ales, IPAs, Stouts, Bitters, et al. Honolulu Beer Works is on the Ewa side of Cooke St. just a couple of doors, going in the ocean direction, before Ala Moana Blvd. There is metered parking on nearby streets but be sure to bring quarters. Also, be sure to read the signs and not park where they tow in the late afternoons during rush hour. Also, be r-e-a-l careful not to park where signage indicates that the street side is (allegedly) owned by Kakaako Land Company: They also tow and try to make a tidy profit off it.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
IRONS TABLE AND TAVERN
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943
Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
August 4 (Thursday), 5:00 P.M.
Come to Irons Table and Tavern for our August General Membership Meeting. Although we like to start ordering food and drink around 5:00 P.M., actual Ski Club "business" won't begin until sometime between 5:30 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. If you are on Nimitz Highway under the freeway structure and going in the Pearl Harbor direction, you take a right hand turn onto Valkenburgh and look for the entrance, on your right, to the Golf Course. You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive off of Salt Lake Blvd: In this case, the entrance would be on your left. Hope to see you at Irons on August 4.

PAU HANA at BLUE TR0PIX BAR AND GRILL
Pearlridge Center
98-151 Pali Momi
Aiea, Hawaii 96701
August 26
(Friday) 4:00 P.M.
We were at Blue Tropix Bar and Grill for Halloween
last year and were planning to go again on June 24 but ended up at Chez Sports
Bar and Grill instead. This, then, is a "makeup." Blue Tropix is located in Pearlridge where
Denny's used to be, across the street from Chili's and American Savings Bank.
If you are turning in from Kamehameha Highway (not recommended due to rail
construction), it is on the right hand side just
before the pedestrian overpass. If you are coming from Moanalua Rd.
and turning down Pali Momi in the ocean direction(recommended), it, of course,
will be on your left just after the pedestrian overpass. There's lots of parking including the
roof-top and Sears. Live music, a pool table, a dart room, about 20 TVs, $3.00 draft beer, Happy
Hour specials, and onolicious food are the draw. Check out Blue Tropix on
Yahoo.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2017
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
January 7 - January 14
Hawaii Ski Week 2017 will be at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, January 7 - January 14, and registration is directly with our travel agency for the trip, Ski.com. Click on https://events.ski.com/GroupListing.aspx . If this does not work, Go online to www.ski.com, click on "GROUPS" at the top of the page, scroll down and click on "JOIN A GROUP" on the right hand side, and our trip should appear with a link to the registration form. The form will have the prices, flights (may change) and lodging details. You can view these things after entering your name. If you don’t want to continue registering, you can log out.
Jackson Hole Resort features 2,500 acres of skiing with an
aerial tram which takes skiers 4,139 feet to the top of the mountain at 10,450
feet in 12 minutes. They also have an eight person gondola, and, new for the
2016-2017 season, another 8 person gondola serving the base area, 8 quad lifts,
1 triple and 2 doubles. The club will be staying in Teton Village, which is the
name of the area near the lifts. The cowboy/rancher town of Jackson, Wyoming is
a 12 mile bus ride away for a fare of $3 one way.
For those of you who
like hotel-like accommodations, we have reservations at the Snake River Lodge
(SRL). The SRL is very near the aerial tram and 150 yards from the gondola. Your
price at the SRL includes daily breakfast and a package of other benefits. We have unbundled the lift tickets, since
they are the same price as the ones offered by Ski.com. So, the SRL package
price is $844 for a double queen room. The king deluxe is higher, but if we get
12 rooms assigned, it will be a free upgrade.
We are also offering 2, 3
and 4 bedroom condos on West Michael Drive in Teton Village. The 4 bedroom Wind
River condos are 100 yards from the Moose Creek quad chairlift. The 2 and 3
bedroom condos are 200 yards from the lift. You can also take a free shuttle to
the tram station and the base area of Teton Village. All condos have 1 bath per bedroom. We
will try to get the most single beds we can in the condos. The condos are $550
per person for 3 and 4 bedroom and $625 for a 2 bedroom.
The registration and your $200 deposit are due by June 30. We
have blocked rooms based on what we think demand will be. To guarantee you get
the room you want, please register as soon as possible. That will also help us
gauge demand. If you have roommates, please send us a list. Airfare right now is
$995. We expect this to come down some, and there may be schedule and airline
changes. We will keep you informed about it. Your deposits are fully refundable,
and options can be added or deleted, up to September 30th.
If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Jonathan,

COMMITTEE
PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA
at
CC's LOUNGE KAROKE BAR &
GRILL
Aiea Town Square
May 27 (Friday)
When this Pau Hana, at an Aiea Karaoke Bar, was first proposed, I was thinking, "I don't know about this," and when I finally got through the traffic, into Aiea Town Square, and saw the opaque black door with security locks, my misgivings were a bit amplified. From the outside, it looked more like a pawn shop than a bar. Once inside, however, the smiling faces of the eight or nine Club members who had preceded me made me feel a bit more comfortable, and a drink, together with the ono pupus supplied by Bubbles, the waitress, widened my comfort zone. It soon got widened enough that, not to be outdone by the mellifluous tones of Bill Hodges on a couple of songs, I grabbed the microphone myself and did my (almost) best Mick Jagger impersonation (minus the dancing) with "Honky Tonk Women." Linda Giers also had her hand at a song or two. How fourteen or fifteen Club members ultimately crammed around a table built for eight I don't know, but a good time was had by all. This looks like a place we'll need to schedule again.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
for the
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
SUMMER GAMES
UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII - MANOA
June 4 (Saturday)
Thanks to Roy Manzoku, helping out at the Special Olympics is fast becoming another Ski Club volunteering tradition. This year, nine of us spent an afternoon administering vision screening exams and performing related supporting duties to the athletes in the vision examination room (a vacant gym adjacent to the Stan Sheriff Center). We stayed a bit busier than last year at another station, the time went by quickly, and we were READY for some liquid refreshment and grinds afterwards at Side Street Inn on Kapahulu. I wonder what they'll have us doing next year? Thank you, again, Roy, for putting this together.

HIKE FROM KOOLAU GOLF COURSE
June 18 (Saturday)
After several days of intermittent rain, dawn broke with sunlight for a change, and ten Ski Club members and guests appeared in the Koolau golf course parking lot for the hike to the Pali Highway with a short detour to a waterfall. The trail was muddy from the recent rains and obstructed by overgrowing branches and fallen trees in a number of places but, except for the last steep section up the trail to the grassy area on the side, just before the tunnels, it was eminently doable. The last steep section, composed of the famous/infamous Hawaii red dirt was a bit steeper and moister than non trail shoes could easily manage, and four of the group elected not to tackle it. Actually, this section turned out to be a mistake: It was not the way we had done it the last time. Your (now less than) intrepid hike leader failed to make a left hand turn down to the road just before the steep pitch as it, at first, had not looked like a regular trail. Both Scott Parmley and Jon Kleinschmidt (as I recall) started down towards the road after we got off the red dirt pitch, pronounced it more doable than part of the hike we had already completed, and down to the road we all went. Once there, most of the group elected to climb up under the viaduct to the other side of the Pali Highway and walk a ways towards the Pali Lookout while the remainder chose to walk back down the road to the parking lot. We were all back to the parking lot by 11:00 A.M. Lessons learned: (1) the hike leader should not lead a group up a trail he hasn't checked out recently; (2) we should all wear good hiking boots or trail shoes unless it's definitely going to be a "walk in the park" which this wasn't. Postscript: The hike leader did this again with another group a few days later, and it turns out that the Old Pali Road to the Pali Lookout has been closed off for about two months due to falling rocks:

PAU HANA
at
CHEZ SPORT BAR AND GRILL
98-150 KAONOHI ST, C226
AIEA, HAWAII 96701
June 24 (Friday)
I counted twelve members and one guest at Chez Sports Bar and Grill on Friday night. I understand that this is a late night "happening" spot, but at 5 o'clock in the afternoon we pretty much had the place, and the band, which was a bit loud, all to ourselves. When I left, around 7:15, six members were still working on their drinks and playing darts.
