PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I just got back from my 51st High School Reunion in New Hampshire where I first learned (sort of) to ski and got my only end-of-season award for sports, a J.V. Letter in skiing-----not because I was any good (and still aren't)---because I fell and broke my leg in a race. Twas a "Purple Heart." I pretty much gave up skiing shortly thereafter and didn't start again until years later after moving to Hawaii, eventually joining the ski club, thanks to Kathy Mulledy, whom I knew through work, and discovering what Western snow was all about. Rocky Mountain powder certainly beats New England Boilerplate, hands down.
Even in early June, the temperature in the Northeast was still a bit on the cool side for outdoor activities without a couple of layers, but it is a lot more comfortable here, and I'm really looking forward to celebrating the 4th of July in a new venue, Hawaii Kai. If you haven't yet sent in your "RSVP" to me and/or Wayne, please do as soon as you can so we know how much food to buy. I was a bit disappointed, though not surprised, to find that the July 15th Willy K concert was already sold out: For those of you who didn't get your tickets when we first announced it, there's always (hopefully) next year. I'm also looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Polo Match in Mokuleia on August 1: For many of us, it will be a unique experience.
Your Trip Committee has been working hard to make our (count 'em) three trips to "Ski Country" come together for next year, and we will be giving you the opportunity to save a postage stamp, and bring your initial deposit to the General Meeting (August Meeting for Teluride, September Meeting for Snowmass, and Tahoe), where you can meet and talk story with others going on the trip. Signup forms for the trips, when available, will be sent out via email and posted to the Trips section on our website. Stay tuned.
See you at the next function!
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
4TH OF JULY IN HAWAII KAI
4th of July gatherings have been a Ski Club tradition for as long as I can remember. For several years, we held them at Schofield Barracks. More recently, we have met for drinks and pupus at Geof's condo in Waikiki and then moved beachside to watch the Ala Moana fireworks show. This year, we plan to celebrate Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Beach Park in Hawaii Kai where there will be plenty of parking, entertainment, food provided by the Club at around 5 P.M., and the usual, gala fireworks show at 8:00 P.M. Parking will be available at Kaiser High, Hahaione Elementary, and Koko Head Elementary Schools with free bus transportation to and from the park. Make plans now to spend 4th of July with your ski club friends. Please email me and/or Wayne (click on Contacts) if you are coming so we know how much food to buy. More details to follow by separate email

WAIKIKI AQUARIUM SUMMER CONCERT: WILLIE K
July 15 (Thursday) 7:00 P.M.
We had such a good time at the Willy K concert, part of the Waikiki Aquarium Summer Concert Series, last year that some of us are doing it again. Willy K is a great guitarist, has a powerful voice, and can and does sing everything from traditional Hawaiian to Italian opera. Unfortunately for those of you who were planning on coming but had not yet purchased tickets, the concert has sold out. For those of you who have tickets, try to get there when the gates open so that we can score a good spot together on the grass around center stage---where we were last year.

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S GRILL, WARD CENTER
July 23 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.
Ryan's Grill at Ward Center, a perennial favorite watering hole for the local folks, will be the site of our July Pau Hana. The drink menu is extensive, connoisseur (in my humble opinion) beers on tap, and great pupus like the kalua pork quesidellas. Also, you can have dinner, if you want, at your table in the bar: No need fo go seet in da restront! Should be parking available in the garage right at Ward Center or, if not, in the Ward Warehouse lot across from the movie theatres. Try to get there early (around 4:30) to help me "try score" a large table to the immediate left of the entrance. If you don't see anyone there when you arrive, look for us on the lanai (more to the left).

POLO MATCH IN MOKULEIA
August 1 (Sunday) 2:00 P.M.
Come early for a swim in the ocean. Pull your car right up to
the field for tailgating. Admission is $8.00 person, $5.00 with military i.d.
and children under 14 are free.
Mokuleia Polo Field
68-585 Farrington Highway
Waialua, Hawaii 96791
From Waikiki or the airport, take the H-1 West, then H-2 North toward Mililani and Wahiawa. When H-2 ends, keep going straight past Schofield Barracks on the left, down a hill and across a bridge. Keep left towards Waialua and Dillingham Ranch. From here you'll drive about 20 minutes along a two lane highway with mostly fields on both side. When you come to the traffic circle, continue through it and go under the bridge towards Mokuleia. Drive about three miles, and the polo field will be on your right side.
If you are planning on coming, please RSVP to jenna@hawaiisnowskiclub.com so that we can reserve enough parking for the tailgate.

JUNE PAU HANA AT PINKY'S
A pau hana at Pinky’s in Kailua: What a great way to relax and celebrate King Kamehameha Day! Almost 20 ski club members and friends enjoyed good food and drinks including two “mystery guests:” former ski club member, Margaret Angel, who now resides in Idaho and Craig Shaffer’s mom, Pat, who had been on January’s ski week trip to Aspen Snowmass. Also attending Pinky’s pau hana were Wanda Sowell’s nephew from Kansas and Margaret Angel’s son and daughter-in-law from California who flew in to attend their Punahou luau/reunion.
