PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Do any of you remember that short paragraph on our Club's history that I wrote, in this column, in the August, 2013 Newsletter?  Well, I didn't----until yesterday when I got an email from a lady named Laureli who introduced herself as the daughter of F. James Lunn, one of our founders listed in our 1969 Articles of Incorporation on file with the State of Hawaii (and in that paragraph in the Newsletter).  She said she was pleased to see her father in the "history books" (Our Newsletter?) and offered to send some pictures.  Well, yesterday, not remembering who F. James Lunn was,  I Googled his name together with "skiing in Hawaii:"  What popped up was the August, 2013 Newsletter----which is what she probably did and how she most likely got my address.  Search engines never cease to amaze me.

Well, in just a little over a week's time, we (excepting me) will be in Steamboat skiing and boarding.  This is our Raison d'etre, our reason for being.  Your Trip Committee, ably chaired by Jonathan Carr, has been working all year long, not just in the last few months, to pull it off as the Committee does year in and year out, and the members deserve a hearty round of applause.

One of our hard working Trip Committee members, Cathy Lau, will be leaving the Board and the Committee and will need to be replaced.  In fact, there are four of us on the Board, including me and Jonathan, whose terms will end this spring.  We may run again, and maybe not.  The election will be coming up at our April meeting so it is not too early (for you) to start thinking about, maybe, joining the Board.  We are a volunteer organization and are always looking for a "few good men and women" to volunteer their time. You don't need to be on the Board to serve on a committee or perform certain tasks for the Club, but it often helps: I was just the Newsletter Editor when I joined Board and only joined to get the information faster.  We meet for an hour once a month and have assignments to which we attend between meetings.  In addition to the challenge, fellowship, satisfaction, hopefully fun, and, maybe, opportunity to exercise some skills and abilities which we might not have the opportunity to exercise in our "other lives," we get to have a very nice meal, the annual Board Meeting/Dinner, at Club expense, once a year.  The dinner is in April, right after the election, for all Board Members, new, continuing, and departing.  Last year it was at Ruth's Chris.

I won't be seeing you on the slopes of Steamboat (drats!!), but I do hope to see you at the meetings and activities and on the slopes of wherever we end up next year.

A hui hou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

HAWAII SKI WEEK 2015
AT STEAMBOAT

The Hawaii Ski Club is going to Steamboat Resort ( http://www.steamboat.com ) in Colorado for the 2015 Hawaii Ski Week, January 30 – February 7, 2015. The Steamboat ski area comprises 2,965 skiable acres with a vertical drop of 3,668 feet. The elevation of the village at the base of the gondola is 6,900 feet. They average 385 inches of snow per year. The ski terrain is described as 14% beginner, 42% intermediate and 44% expert. They started a night skiing program in 2014. You can explore the mountain with the Ambassador ski guides, Director of Skiing Billy Kidd, mogul expert Nelson Carmichael (yeah, right), or with the Over the Hill Gang (that sounds more like it). They have a First Tracks program for the day that all the powder is there for the taking.

In addition to skiing, the resort offers snowshoeing (including a guided, gourmet snowshoe luncheon), sleigh rides, snowmobiling, tubing, etc. The town of Steamboat Springs is 3 miles away by free shuttle. The town is cowboy themed, and they do things like tow skiers down the streets behind horses. In town and nearby there are two different natural hot springs, which might make for a fun excursion.

Our transportation and lodging has been booked by our familiar travel agent, Ski.com.

Our flights are as follows:

United-383 S Depart: HNL 1/30/2015 10:55 pm Arrive: DEN 1/31/2015 08:30 am
United-328 W Depart: DEN 2/7/2015 11:30 am Arrive: HNL 2/7/2015 04:07 pm

Following our arrival in Denver, we will have  a  3 ½ hr. scenic bus ride to the resort.

We are mainly staying in the Phoenix Condominium, which is a block away from the gondola. The Phoenix (http://www.thephoenixatsteamboat.com) offers 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos, two outdoor hot tubs, a heated, outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, exercise room, co-ed sauna, clubhouse and meeting rooms. The condos all have fireplaces, a washer and dryer, and some sort of sleeping arrangement in the living rooms. Many of the condos are on two levels. They have many more 4 bedroom condos with single bedding than 3 bedrooms.

Some of you will be staying at the Ptarmigan Inn which is two doors down from the Phoenix. The Ptarmigan (http://www.steamboat-lodging.com/about-the-ptarmigan-inn) is slope-side with true ski/in ski/out access. They have an outdoor hot tub and pool, ski shop (Christy’s) and a popular restaurant. The rooms feature one king or two queen beds, free internet and a refrigerator. The Ptarmigan is $200 more per person that the 2 bedroom units at the Phoenix. A daily breakfast buffet is available for $80 for the week.

We will have the traditional ski club activities – reception, pot luck, pizza party – and a few more that the Trip Committee may dream up. On Sunday, February 1, 2015, your après ski experience can include viewing of the XLIX Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots with game balls inflated to the full 13 lbs. psi.

Please contact Jonathan  ( jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ) for any questions concerning the trip.

TRIP COMMITTEE

POST SKI WEEK PARTY
AND
FINAL VOTING FOR HAWAII SKI WEEK 2016
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalilo Home Road
February 21 (Saturday) 6:00 PM

Everybody, whether or not you went on the trip to Steamboat, is invited to the recreation area at Sylvia "Sam" Wright's Condo in Hawaii Kai on Saturday evening, February 21. We are having the party two weeks following Ski Week rather than the usual one week because we thought that some of you might have other plans for Valentines Day.  Sam's Condo is where we had our Club's Christmas Party last month, and there should be plenty of street parking available in close proximity to the building.  "Steamboaters" can thrill everyone with their stories of derring-do and share pictures.   If you did not go on the trip to Steamboat, this is where you will have the opportunity to vote for next year's destination.   This is both pot luck and BYOB.  To get to the Esplanade,  turn off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalilio Home Road which is the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay,  drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile, and look for the looming white building complex on the left.  You can briefly pull in to the small parking lot at the entryway to unload your car, but you will then need to find parking on the street.
