PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
When I sent out the final reminder for last Sunday's Chili Cook-Off, I got a tongue in cheek reply from one of our California members that he and his wife couldn't come because they were going skiing instead. (Heh! Heh!) As I write this message, Utah areas Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude have been open for several days, Alta opened on Friday, and Park City started up on Saturday. In Colorado, Breckenridge, Copper, A-Basin, and Loveland have been open for a short while, Vail has also opened, and Telluride, our destination for Hawaii Ski Week, shouldn't be far behind. If your body has not been in motion lately, it's not too late to start your stretching and aerobic exercises and make sure your winter clothing and equipment still work: Hawaii Ski Week is only two months away.
Speaking of clothing and equipment, a former National Ski Patroller and European ski tour guide, who is retired in Kaneohe and no longer skis, found us on the website and phoned me a few weeks ago about very serviceable ski clothing he was no longer using and wished to transfer to people who could/would. Thanks to this generous individual, and my quick trip "over the mountain" to his home, I now have two ski suits, 2 parkas, turtle neck jerseys, and other miscellenous items in a big bag waiting for the "swap meet" at the December 2 General Meeting. Be sure to bring your own items which you no longer use but are still in good condition and, you feel, may be useful to another member.
I want to thank those of you who took the time to email me about how much you enjoyed the chili cook-off. The positive feedback, plus the turnout, tells us that not only should we bring it back next year but, perhaps, "clone" it. One of our members has already suggested a "Fried Rice Challenge?????" Those of you who like to put your culinary talents on display, which always seems to work well, will very soon get another chance at our upcoming Christmas Party at the Larges' home on December 18th. If you have any ideas for future events, don't hesitate to let me know.
Finally, I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving------the one day a year when you are defnitely allowed to eat too much.
See you at the events and, soon, on the slopes.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
THANKSGIVING DAY AT THE BLAISDELL
We've had a good response from club members eager to give thanks this year by helping Salvation Army serve a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner to the less fortunate. Our 17 slots are full, but we may need some subs, so let me know, wanda10s@aol.com , if you want to join us for fun and good feelings and I'll put you on the wait list. For those working, please wear closed comfortable shoes, your ski club shirt (if you have one), and no purse or bag. Pockets or waist packs will have to do. It has become a tradition with us to wear seasonal headgear..... antlers, Santa hats, elf hats, pumpkin hats, etc. Aprons are not a bad idea. The pre-event potluck brunch will be from 9:30 - 11:00 on the sidewalk area near the parking structure. We welcome you to join us, even if you can't volunteer. It's a good time eat, drink, and visit with friends whom you may not have seen lately. Parking is free at the Blaisdell for the day.

ANNUAL SKI CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 18
(Saturday) 5:00 P.M.
Once again, Darrell and Rheta Large have graciously offered
their residence at 585 Kumukahi Place on Spinnaker Isle, Koko Marina to host our
Annual Christmas Party. For over six years running, their kindness,
hospitality, and location have provided us with one of the best venues for a
perfect party. Held in conjunction with the “13th Annual “Festival of
Lights” Koko Marina Boat Parade”, this party is always well attended and one of
our most popular events. Members need to BYOB and bring a dish to share
(Pot luck). The ever popular grab bag will take place, and we ask that a minimum
$15.00 gift value be followed.
To get to the Larges', turn off
Kalanianaole Highway onto Hawaii Kai Drive, proceed approximately .8 mile until
you see Pepeekeo St. on the left: Kumukahi Pl. ,or the unmarked entrance to it,
will be your next right. After you turn right, you will immediately come to a T:
Take a left at the T and look for the 585 on the left.
Try to get there before 5:30 P.M. as Darrell warns that
parking will most likely be at a premium after that time.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2011
Thanksgiving marks a special day for all Americans: a day to give thanks for
family, good friends, a wonderful community and country. But Thanksgiving
weekend has added meaning for all skiers and boarders: it marks the opening of
most ski resorts!!! Time to remember how wonderful it is to enjoy great white
powder, steep slopes, and hot toddies on the mountain!
For 2011, the HSC is trying something new: 3 ski trips( a LOT of extra work on your trip committee). The Telluride trip (Jan 21-29), the offical HAWAII SKI WEEK,is full (although we still have people asking to join us). In addition to the 46 or more members staying at Bear Creek Lodge, we know of at least a few people who will be driving up to spend a few days with the club. Plans for Telluride Ski Week include the Welcoming Reception at Bear Creek Lodge on Saturday, mountain tour on Sunday for intermediate or above skiers, a Sunday evening pub crawl in historic old town Telluride (a free gondola ride from our lodge to old town), NASTAR races on Wednesday afternoon, a potluck dinner, and awards/pizza party on Friday evening. In addition, there will be options for non-ski activities such as dog-sledding and snowshoeing (additional costs). More info about rentals and lunch and après-ski locations will be emailed soon to all who will be on the trip. If you were lucky enough to join us on our last trip to Telluride, you’ll remember what a marvelous place it is for ski week.

hyped up for the first trip of the season to Telluride but let’s not forget our

with 3 hot tubs, daily cleaning service, and free laundry facilities. Your lift
tickets are good at 4 mountains - Snowmass, Aspen, Buttermilk, and Aspen
Highlands. Free shuttle service is available to get you around the town or the

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
CHILI COOK-OFF
Mucho Mahalos to Susan Murata and Doug Kazama for allowing the Ski Club to use their community's private recreation center, on the lofty heights above Kahala Mall, for the Chili Cook-off on November 14th. Twenty-nine (by my count) ski club members attended with six brave souls (me included) daring to enter the cook-off and brave the judgment of their peers. Winning the first prize, a bottle of Patron Reposada and margarita mix, was Bill Hodges. Second place, a dinner certificate for two at the new Mexican restaurant at Ward Warehouse, was Naomi Hill. Third place, a bottle of tequila, went to Rene' or Paul Ferguson (don't know which one cooked). Last place, a coupon for Zippy's Chile and a Mexican cookbook, went to a member who will remain unnamed in this story, but you can be sure that, with the assistance of the cookbook, he/she will be back next year (and so will I) : The gauntlet has been thrown. Everyone seemed to have a good time socializing, the potluck offerings, in addition to the chili, were delicious, the ocean views from the heights were fantastic, and the sunset was spectacular (but no green flash). Again, Mahalo to Susan and Doug for the venue. Also, thanks go to Geof for selecting the theme-appropriate prizes, Momi for supervising (policing?) the food setup, and everyone who helped set-up and tear down the room. Pau.
