CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
Additional events, such as concerts, hikes, excursions, may be added. Watch your email for possible updates.
Every Monday evening (except on holidays): 4:30 P.M. A group of ski
club members and their friends play
tennis at Keehi Lagoon courts, off Lagoon
Drive. Stay in shape and share refreshments afterwards!
August 1 (Saturday) 4:00 - 5:00 PM: Line up at the gate for Laugh Under the Stars at the Waikiki Shell.
August 6 (Thursday) No General Membership Meeting today at Schooners. There will be a General Membership Meeting in September.
August 20 (Thursday) 5:30 Board Meeting at Henry Louie's.
August 22 (Saturday) 5:00 PM: Line up at the gate for Henry Kapono & Friends-Back in the Day at the Waikiki Shell. Strongly suggest that you buy your tickets, in advance, at the Blaisdell box office as they are more expensive on-line and $10.00 more at the Shell on the night of concert.
August 28 (Friday) 3:00 PM: Pau Hana at the Monkeypod Kitchen, Ko Olina Resort.
August 29 (Saturday) 9: AM: Volunteer painting project at Linapuni Elementary School.
September 10 (Thursday) 6:00 PM: General Membership Meeting at Schooners. This is the second Thursday of the month as the first Thursday, our normal meeting date, is U.H.'s first football game, and we don't want to deal with traffic and possible parking issues as well shortchange those of our members who will be going to the game.
October 1 (Thursday) Annual Kickoff Meeting. This is the Kickoff for the new membership year (October 1 - September 30). We pay for the food and reward many of you with door prizes. All you need to bring is yourselves, your beverages of choice, and your checks for the new membership year. Actually, it is better if you mail in your checks so as not to unduly tax our treasurer, Geoff, who is normally grill chef for the evening, might accidentally burn your check or coat it with barbecue sauce in the course of juggling his responsibilities (just joking but----) Stay tuned for time, location, and other details.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Just to highlight some of the items from elsewhere in this Newsletter, we will not having a General Membership Meeting in August, but we will be having one in September, one week later than usual, in recognition of those of you (not me) who are going to the opening of the U.H. football season (on a Thursday night no less) and to save us, who are also not going, the horrors of game day traffic nightmares along with the possibility that Schooner's parking area will be used by people attending the game. Those of you who are sharp-eyed might notice the August 29 painting project at Linapuni Elementary School in Kalihi and wonder, "Wasn't that on July 11? " It was supposed to be on July 11 but was "rained out." On the possibility that some who signed up for the July date might not be able to make it in August, you can send Roy an email (address in article below) if you want to join us. Finally, if you're looking for a new ski case, Lori Auhll wants to give one away: See "Announcements" below.
Our Trip Committee Chair (and V.P.), Jonathan, has advised by email that we currently have thirty nine members signed up for the Park City trip along with six more, who have their own residences in the area or had preexisting plans to be there and will be able to join us for activities. We soon may have to give up one of the condos which had been reserved for the group but should be able accommodate later registrants with hotel rooms. If you are thinking about the trip but have not been ready to commit, now might be the time.
I went on my first hike with my Friday morning hiking "buds," since breaking my hip in February, this past Friday and survived so maybe I'll be leading some hikes again for the Club in the near future. I am a bit slower than I used to be so maybe you guys will end up leading me.
I just picked up my ticket for Henry Kapono & Friends-Back in the Day at the Blaisdell box office where there is immediately adjacent free parking (but you have to be driving mountain direction on Ward to turn in). Hope to see some of you at the concert on August 22 as well as at Laugh Under the Stars this coming Saturday night.
Pray it doesn't rain for the Waikiki Shell events, and pray for snow this coming winter.
A hui hou,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
LAUGH UNDER THE STARS
WAIKIKI SHELL
August 1,
(Saturday) 4 PM (Gates open at 5:00 PM)
Several Club Members have expressed interest in going to the Waikiki Shell on Saturday evening, August 1, just like we did last year for the Back in the Day concert, except this time it's local comedians instead of music. Performers include, but will not be limited to, Augie T, Frank DeLima, Andy Bumatai, and Ed Kaahea. The line, for a good spot on the lawn where we plan to go, usually starts an hour or so before the gate opens so come with a seat back (beach chairs with legs not allowed) sometime before 5, look for your friends in line, and avoid the "stink face" stares of those whom you are pushing further back. Don't bring your own food and drink: It's not allowed. The cheapest tickets are available at the Blaisdell box office on Ward Ave. or at the Shell box office on the night of the event. Box office tickets for the lawn are $21.00 including the overhead charge, but are considerably more expensive from the third party vendors like Ticketmaster. For more details, go to http://www.blaisdellcenter.com/?s=laugh+under+the+stars .

HENRY KAPONO & FRIENDS-BACK IN THE DAY
WAIKIKI
SHELL
August 22 (Saturday) 5:00 PM
A few of us are already planning to return to the Waikiki
Shell on August 22 for the second edition of "Back in the Day." Last year
Henry Kapono said it was a lot of work to put it together and he would not do it
again, but, apparently, he lied. Entertainers this year, besides Henry, include,
but are not limited to, Kalapana, Brother Noland, John Cruz, Cyril Pahinui, Sean
Naaau, Keola Beamer, Robi Kahakalau, Theresa Bright, and Na Leo. Tickets on
the lawn, if purchased in advance, directly from the Blaisdell Box Office on
Ward Ave., are $29.00 (+ $1.00 ticketing fee).
If you buy
them at the Shell on the day of the concert at the Waikiki Shell, they go up
$10.00 to $39.00 (and I would expect another $1.00 fee). If you
buy them on line from Ticketmaster, the prices are higher than directly from the
box office. Just like "Laugh Under the Stars,"
no chairs with legs or
outside food and drink is allowed. Announcement doesn't give the gate
opening time, but I would assume it's 5:30 P.M. and that 5:00 0'clock would be a
good time to get in line to score a good central location on the lawn.

PAU HANA AT THE MONKEYPOD KITCHEN
KO OLINA RESORT
92-108 Olani St., Kapolei, 96707
August 28 (Friday) 3:00 P.M.
Kind of an early time, but that's when Pau Hana starts at the Monkeypod Kitchen--maybe to lure people out to the west side before traffic starts. Hope some of you non retirees can make it. There is plenty of free parking and Happy Hour Specials. We went out there last September and, believe it or not, it did not take that much longer for me, from Kamehameha Heights, than it would take to get to an east side location. Visit www.monkeypodkitchen.com/koolina for specifics and directions. Read the on-line reviews. Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman opened in the Ko Olina resort in December 2012 bringing 36 craft brews on tap served at 29 degrees, kiawe wood oven pizza, and live music twice a day to Oahu’s west side! Having been there a handful of times for lunch and happy hour, Geoff says the food is excellent, but be warns, "this place is not cheap---you get what you pay for!!

VOLUNTEER PAINTING PROJECT
LINAPUNI ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL
1434 Linapuni St., Honolulu, 96819
August 29
(Saturday) 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
We may need more volunteers to help on a painting project at Linapuni Elementary School. This is an interesting school; an Early Childhood Center serving Pre-K to Grade 1. Please contact Roy Manzoku, roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com if you want to volunteer for this worthy project. You can check out their website: http://www.linapuniel.k12.hi.us/Site/Welcome.html . Following the project, we will adjourn to an as yet undecided venue for lunch on the Club.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
SCHOONER'S RESTAURANT
57 ARIZONA MEMORIAL DRIVE
PEARL HARBOR
September 10 (Thursday) 5:30 PM
Come to Schooners for our
September General Membership Meeting on the second, rather than our usual first,
Thursday of the month. Though there are no Sunset Specials for
dinner, there are special on pupus until 6 PM, and some of us can make a meal of
pupus. Members usually start arriving at 5:00 PM. For those of you who haven't yet been to
Schooners, it's right near the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to
visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial
Drive) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will
see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with plenty of free parking. See
you there.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2016
January 29 - February
6
We will be going to Park City, Utah for the 2016 Hawaii Ski
Week. As many of you know, Vail Resorts has purchased the Park City Mountain
Resort. This summer they plan to install an 8 passenger gondola to connect Park
City with Canyons Resort, already managed by Vail Resorts. This will create, in
their words, the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of
terrain. They also plan a new restaurant at the Park City gondola terminus
(bottom of Silverload lift), and upgrades to the King Kong and Motherlode lifts.
Ski.com will be providing discounted lift tickets, obviously good on both
mountains. The adult 5 day ticket will be $330 and the senior 5 day lift ticket
will be $250. Ski.com will also provide one day lift tickets for Deer Valley for
those of you who want to spend the day there. These tickets will cost $90, which
is a good discount from this year’s $115 window price. As we mentioned earlier,
you may want to purchase an epic pass from Vail Resorts for the season. These
will also be available from Ski.com, but we don’t know the details on this now.
Because you ski club members have stated categorically that ski-in/ski-out
access is a priority, we have chosen to stay primarily at The Lodge at the
Mountain Village. In addition to ski-in/ski-out access, the Lodge is 20 yards
from the Payday Lift, a 6 person high speed lift. There is a mini mall next door
with 4 ski shops and some restaurants. The Lodge offers hotel rooms, studio
suites, and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos. We have reserved one 4 bedroom condo,
four 3 bedroom condos and 4 hotel rooms. The hotel rooms have refrigerators and
coffee makers. We say we are staying “primarily” at the Lodge because they do
not offer hotel rooms with two beds. For our singles we have reserved some hotel
rooms across the street at the Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel. These rooms will have
two queen beds. The Park City free shuttle bus stops at the Lodge, and the Lodge
also offers free point to point on demand shuttle service. Main Street, Park
City, with all its shops and restaurants is about 1/2 mile away. The Lodge
features an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, numerous hot tubs, free wireless
internet, a fitness center and their own ice rink (for a fee). The Lodge has
plenty of meeting space for our traditional reception, pot luck and farewell
pizza party.
Our non-stop flights to Salt Lake City are as follows:
• Delta-1104 V Depart: HNL 1/29/2016 09:55 pm Arrive: SLC 1/30/2016 07:11 am
• Delta-1105 V Depart: SLC 2/6/2016 11:55 am Arrive: HNL 2/6/2016 03:35 pm
Since we are arriving so early, and it is only an hour and a half to Park
City, one could ski on Saturday, our arrival day. That would give you seven days
of skiing.
Of course, transfers to and from the airport are included.
Park City is more expensive than Steamboat. We will be paying about $300 to $400
more for a full package. The full package price (air, transfer, 7 nights
lodging, 5 day lift ticket) will range from $1,800 to $2,000.
This year
we would like to try something different for registration. You will be able to
register and pay for the trip online directly with Ski.com, and pay them
directly by check or credit card. This will relieve the trip committee of some
work, although we will still be responsible for roommate assignments. Ski.com
anticipates have this service ready about May 20th. We will inform you of when
to contact them for registration. Pray for snow.
THE TRIP COMMITTEE
PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT LA MARIANA SAILING CLUB
50 Sand Island
Road, Honolulu
July 24 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.
Well, it was a nice afternoon, less than the usual amount of traffic on Nimitz Highway, and only eight members showed up for one of Toby's favorite Pau Hana locations (to which he still needed three tries a month ago to get the directions right). The good part about the low turnout was that we could get separate checks and not have to pool our money at the end (which too often ends up a bit short at the first count). For those of you older members who didn't come, it would have been a chance to catch up with the Kellys (Jim and Vel) who did. We'll have to schedule La Mariana again when more of our "Pau Hana Hui" members are in town.
