PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

In last month's "President's Message," I bemoaned the low attendance at the Ryan's Pau Hana, and look what happened!!!   We got fifteen at La Mariana last Friday.  Think there's a connection?  I don't, but I was still glad to see it.   Come to Longhi's next month, which is the day after I get back from my twelve day ski trip to New Zealand (my 16th), and I'm sure I'll have some stories to share.   Also,  Todd and Malia are planning to be down there around the same time and will be overlapping with me in Queenstown for two or three days so I won't be able to lie to you.

Kevin reports fifteen bikers participated in the Pearl Harbor Bike Path ride this past month,  and I'm hoping that he and Jon get just as good a turnout for the August ride from Hawaii Kai.   My knee is doing a little better these days, which is why I'm leading the relatively easy Moanalua Valley hike (where I've already been, twice, in the past two months) this coming weekend and am planning another, perhaps somewhat more difficult, hike for September:  The September hike is TBA because, rather than return to a place I know well,  I've been wanting, for a while, to explore a trail system in Kaneohe under the Pali highway:   There's a whole nest of trails that aren't well marked with one of them, if I can find it, going to a waterfall.  I've been on a couple of the trails, but I need to do some exploring and confirming the route before I dare take anyone else.  In any case, I've found, through the years, that hiking is a good way to get back in condition for skiing sooo---come along.

We are planning to do something different for the October Kick-Off Meeting this year.  For the past three years, or more, we have pre-ordered sit-down plate dinners at our usual meeting venue and have, kind of, lost track of the real purpose of the Meeting which was to bring new members into the club, as well as to promote renewals---which is kind of difficult with the way we have been doing it.  Therefore, this year, we are planning to hold the Kick-Off at Geof's Condo in Waikiki, where we had the packet pickup party for Big Sky last year.  We hope to buy enough food to "feed an army," which should be less expensive that having it at a restaurant,  have enough money left over for more raffle items, hold a silent auction and, perhaps, other activities which will allow for more casual mingling.  Also, we will be asking all of you to bring a friend who might want to join.

With regard to nest year's ski trips,  sixteen had committed to Japan as of last Thursday,  and there were three possible signups in the offing which would bring the number to nineteen:  We need a minimum of twenty to proceed.  We are hoping to have information on the second trip to Sun Valley available at the August General Membership Meeting next week.

Enough for now!

Hope to see you at the General Membership Meeting and at other forthcoming activities.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

MOANALUA VALLEY HIKE
July 28 (Saturday) 8:30 A.M.

Moanalua Valley is steeped in Hawaiian history.  This will be a technically easy but, depending upon the recent weather, possibly muddy in spots, hike along an old "carriage road," slowly climbing from the community park at the back of the valley to whatever point the group decides to turn around.  Hopefully, we will all go to the end, as I did the hike again, with a couple of friends from Alaska, last  week and it is shorter, only about three and a half miles, than I stated in last month's Newsletter (so much for relying on Internet descriptions).   The carriage (let's call it a jeep) road starts off basically level but with a lot of gullies for the first mile and then climbs and ends towards the back of the valley without the "stunning view" that I previously reported (again, so much for the internet). The round trip took us 3 hours with stops to more thoroughly explore the site of the old Douglas Damon estate (cement pad, cement stairs, brick oven, site of old swimming pool) being reclaimed by the forest, to see a rock with ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, and to admire the work it took, in the late 19th or early 20th century, to construct the seven arched bridges on the, then, cobblestoned, road.  The first mile of the hike, which, I suspect, is the length of the original cobblestone "carriage road" portion,  is replete with signage containing information on the history of the valley, the flora and fauna (Kevin take note), and similar information.  At about the two-mile point on the road, a trail to the saddle overlooking the Windward side and access to the top of the Stairway to Heaven takes off (Jon "K" take note), but we passed on this.  We also passed on some wisps of bushwhacked trails leading up into the mountains from the end of the road, and turned around to retrace our steps instead.   To get to Moanalua Valley from either Honolulu or "Aiea side," get off the Moanalua Freeway at Exit 2.    If you are coming from the Honolulu side, take an immediate right up Ala Aolani St. (but no sign identifying it as such) into the valley.  From the West side, just follow the road paralleling the freeway and turn left under the viaduct at the bottom of the hill beyond Kaiser-Moanalua.  Take Ala Aolani up the valley to the Community Park at the end of the road where there should be sufficient parking either in the lot or on the street.  Bring some water and wear shoes that you won't mind getting muddy.  See you there.

BIKE RIDE SERIES CONTINUES

The Summer Solstice has passed which means we are now officially on our way to winter! To start getting the body back in shape for the season, the club has organized a series of easy bike rides at select locations on Oahu.

Bike Ride #2: August 11, 10:00 a.m., Hawaii Kai

An easy ride along the Hawaii Kai to Kahala corridor. Meet at the Park and Ride lot on Keahole Street (across City Mill). The ride will start here and proceed toward Kahala. Along the way we will explore Niu Valley and Aina Haina on the Mauka side, and have bird’s eye views of Waialae Country Club, Kawaikui Beach Park, Kanewai Fishpond and Paiko Lagoon on the Makai side. Bring your bike, helmet, water and sunscreen. After the ride we will have lunch at Greek Marina (Koko Marina Shopping Center).

See you there!

PAU HANA AT LONGHI'S
ALA MOANA SHOPPING CENTER
Friday August 24, 4:30 P.
M.

Following last month's Pau Hana at La Mariana off Sand Island Road, we are going a bit more "upscale" for our August Pau Hana which will be at Longhi's, Ala Moana Center.   Happy Hour is from 3-7 PM every day at the bar.  for easy parking, drive up the ramp from Ala Moana Blvd. to the second (mall) level, turn right and park – lots of free parking. Private elevator located next to Morton’s Restaurant to take up to Longhi’s. (This is to the right of Sears, facing the mountain,  and over Old Navy- if you’re familiar with shopping Ala Moana and is in Space 3001If you are looking at a shopping center map.   It is a beautiful, elevated open air spot for sunset/pupu’s and drinks overlooking the water. Pupus from $7.50 and up. Beer, $4.50 and up, wines $5 and up and selected well drinks, $4.50 and up . It gets crowded on Friday nights, so recommendation is to come as early as you can.

PAU HANA AT PINKY'S IN KAILUA
 September 21 (Friday)  4:30 P.M.

Escape the crowds of Honolulu, jump in your car and get on the H3, Likelike (less traffic now that we have the H3) or the Pali,  and come to Pinky's Pupu Bar and Grill in "laid back" Kailua.    Set beside a canal, the restaurant is decorated in art deco Hawaiiana (rattan, canoe paddles, sculptured fish and tiki torches) is brightly lit, even around a horseshoe- shaped bar near the entrance. The family-casual menu is local all the way with an extensive pupu menu. This is a great location for all, including families and those who don’t drink alcohol.  Pinky's is located at 970 Kalaheo Drive at the intersection of Kalaheo Drive and Mokapu Blvd.   If you are coming from Honolulu/Pearl City side via the H3 or Likelike and continuing down Mokapu Blvd.,  it will be on your right (Aikahi Park Shopping Center will be on the other side of the intersection on your left).  You will have to take a right onto Kalaheo Drive and then a quick left (if there is no traffic) or turn around a little ways down Kalaheo and drive back to get into the parking lot.   There are small tables in the bar and longer tables in the restaurant,  and history at this venue (we've been here several times in past years)  tells us that we will be seated in the restaurant after our group reaches enough "critical mass."  See you there?

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITES:

BIKE RIDE #1
(Affectionately renamed “The Road Not Traveled, But We Went For It Anyway!”)

My day almost ended before it started when my back tire went flat right out of the car!  Fortunately, I always carry a spare tube, and after a few minutes delay,  an eager band of 11 people power pedal punishers set out on a trip to the West side. As soon as we reached Blaisdell Park all of Pearl Harbor opened up to view with the giant “Floating Golf Ball” almost close enough to touch.  Did you know that in the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, along with the Stilts and Ducks,  there are also Koi in the water?   That was a complete surprise to me! Onward we went, past the Mothballed Navy fleet and the Ted Makalena Golf Course until we came to the “end” of the road in Waipahu.  It was at this point a question came up: How far can we REALLY go?  Technically the section between Waipahu and West Loch is closed because there is no longer a functional bridge to cross the canal, but there was still enough of the bridge in place to walk over if you carried your bike.  So, the group decided to go for it!  The closed section came in 4 distinct phases: loose gravel, tightrope walk across bridge, dusty trail and mud bog, before emerging at the West Loch Shoreline Park on the Ewa side.  We continued on this well maintained path until we reached the end of the line (for now?) at Asing Park. A brief pit stop at the West Loch clubhouse to refill the water bottles, then it was time to turn around and head for home.  Needless to say, after an adventure like that everyone was hungry, so it was off to the Aiea Shopping Center for some ono grindz at the Roast Duck Kitchen, followed by Ice Garden Shave Ice with Mochi Balls! For those of you who couldn’t make it you missed out, but another ride is coming up soon, and who knows what discoveries await? See you there!

PAU HANA AT LA MARIANA SAILING CLUB
Friday, July 20

Geof's idea to return to La Mariana Sailing Club for the July Pau Hana was great!  This is a real comfortable, no frills bar-restaurant decorated with the flotsam and jetsam of just about every "Tiki Bar" from Waikiki that has "gone bust."  You just show up, not dress up,  the food and drink prices are very reasonable, and the pupu portions, except for the nachos, are ample:  The size of the nacho plate was way more than ample.  Fifteeen (count 'em) ski club members, including a few that we hardly ever see at Pau Hanas, or hardly see at all,  drifted in from about 4:15 P.M., and the the "party" went to about 7 P.M.   I think I'll find an excuse to drag some people over there long before the Club goes again.
