PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I remember Anita (Hodges), our previous Vice President, saying, on more than one occasion, that events are less well attended during the Summer because people go away and that has, indeed, apparently been the case these past two months.   We even had to cancel the "Paddle to the Mokes," because of poor response, but I'm sure glad it's back on for August 6 because I would have gone back then if I wasn't going away myself----and ditto for a couple of other people who, I've heard,  plan to go this time.

Also, except for the the Aquarium events and helping the Salvation Army on Thanksgiving,  it's been a while since the Club participated in service activities, and I am thankful that new Board Member Roy Manzoku has developed an opportunity to help the Palolo Chinese Home on Saturday morning, September 24th.   Many organizations, such as this, don't have the money to pay for adequate maintenance and unlike the schools, which have more visibility such as through the "Adopt a School Day" program and parent groups, are unable to easily attract volunteers to help.   This might lead to more future volunteer work at the Chinese Home, with other similarly situated organizations, or, even, perhaps with a school in need of maintenance/repair.   I certainly hope you contact Roy (see article below) to volunteer on September 24th.

For those of you who remember the first days of soreness from skiing/boarding last year, now,  halfway through the Summer, is the time to start doing, not just thinking about, conditioning for next year.   Especially if you have a desk job, live in a condo, and are not, thereby, "blessed" with the necessity for ongoing yard work, etc. that the rest of us are,  joining Ski Club activities (other than the General Membership Meetings and Pau Hanas) is one way you can start to get in better shape.

See you out there!!!

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

WAIKIKI AQUARIUM CONCERT SERIES
June 16 - August 11
Next Concert: Ju
ly 28

The Hawaii Ski Club is again supporting our Waikiki Aquarium with much needed (and very much appreciated) manpower during their annual fundraising evening concert series this summer.   Proceeds will go towards installation of a photovoltaic power system for the Acquarium.  Volunteers assist with such tasks as setting up and taking down tables and chairs, hanging posters, manning entrances, emptying trash containers, selling scrip, and serving food. Set up starts at 3pm and closing down starts when the concert ends at 9pm.

The request for additional assistance in the last Newsletter was incorrect in that new volunteers were not being accepted after the beginning of the series.   Jake Shimbukuro played on June 16, Olomana on June 30, and Amy Hanaiali'i on July 14.   Na Palapalai and Mailani on will play on July 28, and, to end the series,  the Brothers Cazimero on August 11

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Sam Sneads Tavern
August 4 (Thursday) 6 P.M.

Come to the General Membership Meeting for updates on Club plans and activities.  As usual, it would be wise to arrive early, before 5:30 P.M., to take advantage of the dinner specials.  Geof will be on hand to take additional payments next year's trips.   This will be the last regular General Membership Meeting before the annual October Kick-Off as we will not be having a meeting in September.

KAYAKING TO THE "MOKES" AND BEACH BARBECUE
August 6 (Saturday) 9 A.M.

"Kayaking to the Mokuluas," cancelled in June due to low expected participation, is on again for Saturday, August 6 at the request of several members who wanted to go but couldn't make the June 18th date.

The plan is to start as soon as we can assemble everyone in the water after 9 A.M., paddle out to the "Mokes," come back, and have a barbeque at the beach. Kayaks should be reserved in advance. They can be rented from Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks, Inc. 130 Kailua Road, www.kailuasailboards.com, approximately a 100 yard walk from the launching site.  Kamaaina rates, which can only be arranged via telephone, 262-2555, are 20% off the advertised rates of Single, $39.00 half day and $49.00 full day; and Double, $55 and $65.00. Half day is 4 hours. Geof thinks we could do it in 4, but some people might need more time.   Kayaks can also be rented from Hawaiian Water Sports, www.hawaiianwatersports.com , on Hamakua Drive, but, unless you have a truck, SUV, or roof racks,  it appears that you would have a 1.5 mile paddle along the canal to the beach where the Kailua Sailboard customers are launching.

If you plan rent a Kayak and come with us on August 6, contact Wanda (Wandi) Sagum
sagumw001@hawaii.rr.com  no later than Wednesday, August 3 so that we know who's coming and can coordinate food, etc.  Whether or not you participate in the paddle to "Mokes," come join us for the picnic on the beach in the afternoon (probably after 2 PM).

PAU HANA AT BANDITOS CANTINA
August 19 (Friday), 4:30 P.M.

Come to the August Pau Hana at Banditos Cantina, 98-151 Pali Momi Street A, across from Chili's and McDonalds in Downtown Pearlridge Center.  Banditos is a "hole-in-the-wall" locally-owned Mexican restaurant and serves fresh, homemade Mexican food. Every morning, the kitchen staff prepares the many ingredients that make their dishes so fresh and delicicous. Even the tortillas and chips are made fresh, everyday.   Happy hour is from 4:00 - 6:00 PM serving discounted beers, wines and drinks. Plenty of free parking adjacent to the cantina.

VOLUNTEER MAINTENANCE WORK AT THE PALOLO CHINESE HOME
September 24 (Saturday), time TBA

The Hawaii Ski Club has a long tradition of participation in volunteer service activity such as assisting with the cleaning and renovation of low income family homes in the now defunct, annual Christmas in April project,  assisting the Salvation Army with feeding Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless at the Blaisdell Center on Thanksgiving day, "manning" telephones at Hawaii Public Radio during their twice yearly fund raising drives,  and the ongoing operational assistance to fund raising projects, such as concerts, in support of the Waikiki Aquarium.  The Palolo Chinese Home (PCH)    (http://www.palolochinesehome.org/) a nonprofit adult residential care home, providing adult residential care, skilled nursing/intermediate care, adult day care, and overnight respite care services, can now use our help.    Located on 15 acres in Palolo Valley, it was established in 1917 to care for elderly plantation laborers and,  today, serves people of all ethnicities and religions.

PCH needs help with maintenance such as yard work and painting and will appreciate any help we can give.  Please lend a hand for half a day on Saturday, September 24, 2011.  PCH is located at 2459 10th Ave. in Palolo Valley.  Tools will be provided. We plan to work the morning , followed by some pau hana rest and relaxation at a location to be announced. Start time to be announced.   Contact Roy Manzoku, roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , to sign up for this volunteer service project.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2012

Your Trip Committee has been hard at work getting you the best prices for our two trips for 2012.

Ski Week - Big Sky, Montana - January 27 - February 4, 2012. This is our official Hawaii Ski Week trip for 2012! Full packages start at $1582.

1) Ski in/out Huntley hotel room with a free breakfast buffet. The hotel is located in the Village and has two Queen beds in the room with a small refrigerator. Double occupancy.

2) Walk in/out Bighorn condo's, 3 bedroom/3 bath, good for 6 occupants. This is a short walk to the slopes and you can connect via the Poma lift. See this link for more details on a poma lift. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platter_lift

We are also planning a Yellowstone Snowmobile day trip - if you're interested in that, purchase only a 5-day lift ticket package to be able to make it as it will be an all day trip. More details on that later - they're closed for the season right now!

Your lift tickets will be good at Big Sky mountain. To ski on both mountains (Moonlight Basin and Big Sky), there is an additional fee that you can pay at any lift ticket office (we thought it easier if you coordinate with friends on what day to go, meet at the ticket office, pay (approximately $27 more) and ski on TWO mountains.)

Big White, CANADA - is located in the picturesque Okanagan Valley.   Big White is uniquely blessed with sunny weather, dry powder and a mild average temperature of -5C (23 F). With 118 marked runs fanning from the summit, 2,565 acres of skiable terrain, and 16 lifts, there‘s a great selection of terrain for everyone with deep powder bowls, wide-open glades, and great fall-line cruising. For the ultimate park experience, head to the award winning TELUS Terrain Park which is the best progressive park in North America. To top it off, slalom through the spectacular“Snowghosts” (snow caked trees) which create a magical backdrop in this winter playground.

Trip dates are March 9-17, which is the DOE Spring Break. Bring your whole family! Kids ski free with a paid adult lift ticket.

Air Canada is an affiliate of United Airlines so get mileage for United, AND one bag is free! Everyone who goes on this trip MUST HAVE A PASSPORT.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

AIEA LOOP TRAIL HIKE
June 26 (Sunday)

How would you feel if you threw a party and nobody came?   Ask Kevin.   He was the only one to show up on what turned out to be a rainy Sunday morning, but he didn't waste the drive up the hill:  He did the hike alone.   Ask him about it when you next see him---and get the story about the Red Billed Leothrix he spotted.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN HAWAII KAI

Approximately eighteen Ski Club members and their guests (but only twelve to fourteen who stayed for the food and fireworks) enjoyed our second "Fourth of July in Hawaii Kai."   Most of us were creative enough to find closer parking than in the advertised lots,  there was ample cheer (both verbal and liquid), and the tent location was "to-die-for," right on the wall with an unobstructed view of the 8:30 P.M. fireworks show from a barge in the water only a half mile away.  Also, the weather cooperated with only a brief, slight drizzle at the end of the evening.   Our Club banner attracted some interest (including from a previous member who harks back to the Dick Tillson-Mauna Kea days), and we'll see if it leads to any new members.  The fireworks show was even more  SPECTACULAR than last year's with one or two displays that were completely new, I would imagine, to most of us.   Mahalos to Wayne for keeping his "ear to the ground" for planning and buying the food, to Kevin for his ever-so-large-sized tent, to both Kevin and Wayne for coming over on the preceding day to "score" the spot and erect the frame, to Geof for bringing the supplies, the grill, and his culinary expertise, and to all who helped tear everything down and load the vehicles at the end of the evening.

JULY PAU HANA

Those of you who passed on the July Pau Hana intended for Oceans 808 (formerly The Ocean Club)  at Waterfront Plaza (formerly Restuarant Row) must have had a premonition.   Oceans 808 was closed for a private party, and the six of us (the Kellys, the Dehay-Mulledys, Geof, and "Your's Truly," die-hards all) who showed ended up at the outdoor Bambu Bar (formerly the Row Bar).   Following a couple of rounds and the Kelly's departure for home, the rest of us made the short drive to Murphy's Bar and Grill on Merchant St. (good choice), the original "home of the Ski Club,"  for another round and a very reasonably priced dinner.  This wasn't the Pau Hana planned, but it worked.
