PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I was pleased to see so many of you on July 4th at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai.  It was a good turnout,  got to meet new members Joe and Claudia Koskey who are fellow Red Sox fans (at least Joe is), got to see/hear Jake Shimabukuro for free,  and viewed one of the most spectacular fireworks finales I've ever seen---maybe because the small barge, from which the fireworks were set off,  was just offshore, "up close and personal."  Mucho Mahalos go to Wayne Fujihara for coming up with the idea of Maunalua Bay in the first place and for buying all the food,  Kevin Okawa for providing the tent, Geof Chu for grilling the food, and Jon and Momi for getting there early to help "stake out the spot" and man/woman power with all of the construction and tearing down duties, and to all of you who brought Pupus, dessert, and contributed your good cheer.    It was a 4th of July to remember, and I'm already looking forward to next year.

Since I first joined the club in the early 80s, it has been a "social club that skis" (and now boards) rather than a ski (and boarding) club that socializes,  and in keeping with the tradition of regular activities and Pau Hanas,  our next activity will be the polo match at Mokuleia on August 1 (see below).   It's a long time since I've seen a polo match (except for in the movies), and I'm really looking forward to going and seeing a lot of you again.

Finally, if you're planning on going to Telluride (Hawaii Ski Week 2011), the August 5th General Membership Meeting at Sam Sneads will be a good opportunity to  "put your money down" and see who else is planning to go.   For those unable to make the meeting due to conflicting obligations or "geographical challenges," the signup form and mailing instructions are in the "Ski Trips for 2011" article below:  Be sure to mail it in ASAP.   The price is a little higher than what we have become accustomed to, but, unfortunately neither we nor the tour agency have any control over the airfares.  Hopefully, the fare will come down in sufficient time before the trip to reduce the tab.

See you at the activities and the meetings.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

POLO MATCH IN MOKULEIA
August 1 (Sunday) 2:00 P.M.

Come early for a swim in the ocean. Pull your car right up to the field for tailgating. Admission is $8.00 person, $5.00 with military i.d. and children under 14 are free.

Mokuleia Polo Field
68-585 Farrington Highway
Waialua, Hawaii 96791

From Waikiki or the airport, take the H-1 West, then H-2 North toward Mililani and Wahiawa.  When H-2 ends, keep going straight past Schofield Barracks on the left, down a hill and across a bridge.  Keep left towards Waialua and Dillingham Ranch.  From here you'll drive about 20 minutes along a two lane highway with mostly fields on both side.   When you come to the traffic circle, continue through it and go under the bridge towards Mokuleia.   Drive about three miles, and the polo field will be on your right side.  Ask for the Ski Club parking area

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AT SAM SNEADS TAVERN
August 5 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Don't miss the General Membership Meeting on August 5th where you will have the opportunity to sign up for Hawaii Ski Week 2011 in Telluride.  For those of you who may be new, Sam Sneads Tavern is located at the Navy-Marine Golf Course, off of Valkenburgh St., right across from the Honolulu International Airport.   Although the formal meeting won't start until 6:00, come 5:15 - 5:30 to take advantage of of the  2 for 1 dinner specials.

TOBY

PAU HANA AT SCHOONERS
August 27 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.

Come join the Ski Club's "Pau Hana Hui" for a Pau Hana at Schooners, Pearl Harbor on Friday, August 27th.   Relax with a cold one while watching the water lap gently against the boats in the harbor and the sun set slowly over the horizon (Corny, huh?).   Schooners is located at 57 Arizona Memorial Road just past the Ford Island Road overpass. Turn off of Kamemeha Highway as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right onto Arizona Memorial Road, drive down the road a short ways, go under the overpass, and you will see Schooners on the left.  Should be plenty of parking.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AT SAM SNEADS TAVERN
Setpember 2 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

This is the meeting where you will have the opportunity to make a deposit for either the Snowmass or Tahoe trips.   Although the formal meeting won't start until 6:00, come 5:15 - 5:30 to take advantage of of the  2 for 1 dinner specials.

PAU HANA AT MONTEREY BAY CANNERS, PEARLRIDGE CENTER
September 17 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.

Here we go again!  Another Pau Hana for those of you so inclined.   This is also an evening on which  the Rainbow Wahine Volleyballteam will be playing BYU (at 7 P.M),  Ski Club members have met here before to watch games, and the management might be pursuaded (no promises) to turn on the wide screen.  Monterey Bay Canners is located in Pearlridge Center-West.  Turn off Kamehameha Highway onto Kaonohi St. and take the first entrance, on the right, into the shopping center which is just  behind (Mauka of) Anna Millers.  Take an immediate left, go uphill within the Center, and you'll see Monterey Bay Canners on the right.  It's kind of easy to get "imprisoned" in the wrong location in Pearlridge Center as not all of the parking areas are connected, but follow my directions, and you should be fine.

MOONLIGHT WALK
September 24 (Friday) Keehi Lagoon 7 P.M.

The Ski Club has been invited to join a group which has been scheduling monthly late afternoon/early evening walks along the seashore and adjacent areas to watch the sunset, watch the moonrise, engage in lively (or not) conversation,  and then meet somewhere, hopefully interesting, for dinner.   The "moonwalks" (nothing to do with Michael Jackson) are normally scheduled on or within a couple of days of the full moon, are generally 2 - 3 miles long, and are conducted at a pace to encourage conversation.    More information, i.e. exactly where to meetand the general course of the walk, will be forthcoming.

ANNUAL KICKOFF MEETING AT SAM SNEADS TAVERN
October 7 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

This is our annual General Membership Meeting to "kick off" the new membership year (October 1  - September 30.  We will be making the new membership form available via the Website and/or the Newsletter, and/or separate email prior to the meeting, and you can bring the completed form and your dues with you.   This is the one meeting of the year when the Club buys the food.   We plan to reprise last year with your choice of three pre-selected dinners off the menu.  Stay tuned.

RETURN OF THE LEGENDARY CHILE COOKOFF
November 14 (Sunday)

When I first joined the club in the early 80s, the Chile Cookoff was an annual event, a potluck where the more daring, "culinarily inclined" members would bring their homemade chile for entry into the contest with everyone else serving as judges.   It was a lot of fun, toasted palates notwithstanding.  As I recall, someone (I think named Dennis, but I might be wrong)  once cheated and won with Zippy's Chile.   I once took second with a concoction I don't want to admit to, tried to make real chile the next year, and wasn't even in the running.    Anyhow, we will be holding this affair in the late afternoon/early evening of Sunday, November 14th at a community recreation complex on Waialae Nui, the heights overlooking Kahala Mall.  This will substitute for the Pre-Thanksgiving party of immediate years past, but anyone is welcome to bring turkey chile.   Stay tuned for further details as the event grows closer.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2011

The trip committee will be offering 3 trips for 2011 as described below.  The official Hawaii Ski Club trip will be the Telluride trip from January 21-January 29, 2011

At the General membership meeting on August 5, at Sam Snead’s, we will be collecting $100 deposit for the Telluride trip along with your signup form.

General membership meeting, September 2, at Sam Snead’s - $100 deposit for the Snowmass trip (February 25-March 5) and/or $100 deposit for the Tahoe trip (March 18-26).

You must turn in a deposit with your signup form to reserve a space.

************************************************************************************************************
The Telluride trip starts on January 21 and returns on January 29.
• 7 nights at the Bear Creek Lodge in the Mountain Village, all 3 bed/3 bath units. http://www.bearcreeklodgetelluride.com/

• 5 or 6 days of lift tickets
• Air reservations available on United Airlines from HNL-Montrose-HNL
• You must sign up AND pay the $100 deposit to reserve a spot for Telluride
• Your deposit will be refundable up until October 1.

Airfare prices are at its highest ever – air seats won’t be booked until October in hopes that the airfare drops and we can take advantage of the possibility of lower prices. The airfare is shockingly high – normally we pay about $500-600 and the lowest quote we’ve got is $808. If you have mileage miles, you may want to look into that as an option to keep the costs down.

Stay tuned for any updates as we get them.

Cut the signup form below from hard copy or copy/paste from this screen and mail in to the Hawaii Ski Club with your deposit if you can't make the meeting.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

JULY 4TH CELEBRATION

28 Ski Club members and guests made it to Maunalua Bay (The ocean side of Kalanianaole Highway when passing by Hawaii Kai) for 4th of July.   We had a tent, food,  entertainment (for those who wandered over the stage area), and a spectacular fireworks show.   Those who came are already talking about making this location a new tradition.  See the President's Message (above) for more on the event.

PAU HANA AT RYANS

On Friday, July 23, Ski Club members and their guests showed up at Ryans in Ward Center for drinks, Pupus, and "talk story."   We were graced by the presence of former Hawaii resident and Ski Club member, now living in Florida  (the other place with warmth, blue skies, and palm trees), Asta Poirier with her signficiant other, Richard.   I  don't know how she managed it, but our waitress, somehow, found several extra tables and chairs to drag over to accommodate the ever expanding group.  We started with 2 at 4:30 P.M. and ended up with 16 by 7 P.M. when the "party" ended.
